Josh, maybe you can start asking your friends if they would be willing to lend you a bike until the weekend? That'll at least assure you of having a bike for your first tri, lessening the anxiety!
Good luck

Josh - that really sucks.  What did the friend say?  I mean that is quite for your buddy to do.

Chad - Gotta put up a RR.  That sounds like a reall cool race.

Josh I have to agree with everyone else in saying that sucks. Have you talked to any local bike shops about the possibility of borrowing or renting a bike for your race? If I were close I would let you use mine

Thanks for the support, everyone.

Just so you all know, I do own a mountain bike, so not all hope is lost. I found a really good deal at Performance Bicycle on some road/MTB tires, and I just finished mounting them on the bike. This obviously isn't my first choice (it's a 21" bike, which is slightly too big for me), but it sure beats the hell out of not racing at all!

I saw a little thing last night on the news about the guys dad was an ex olympian and then they mentioned that his son had been killed down between Phoenix and Tuscon running a race. I figured it was the same one. Really sad.

I did buy a wet suit today from a tri store up in orem-it was a last year rental suit in great condition for 1?2 price. Got to swim in their endless pool to try it out. what a rush.

Lance, thanks for that website ... I'll definitely keep a close eye on this site. Great find!!!

On a related note, I spent the past few days working on my mountain bike in order to get it "race ready." I took it out for a short 9-mile ride today and am happy to report that it was a really smooth ride, and I was able to ride at about the same pace I was hitting with the hybrid.

Hello everyone,
Just thought I would give you an update. I just had naval hernia surgery March 3 (my birthday too) and for three weeks before that I was sidelined with a nasty infection. I have read many other posts on here about hernia surgery and I am encouraged.  I am so grateful that I was able to exercise as much as I did before my recent health set backs. All that training has really helped me my vital signs, and I think has put me in a great position for recovery. Just wanted everyone to know I really enjoy reading everyone's updates and I am not lurking, just not a lot to share at the moment. Thanks again for everything.

Phillip

Signed up for the 4 states triathlon (a sprint) for May 16, also planning for Rose city in Tyler and Jefferson Tx triathlon. The four states is in Texarkana Tx. Might also try to find an olympic distance, of course this plan may be a little gung-ho depending on grad school. But going for my masters after 40 yrs old is crazy anyway

Hitting the road in a few hours, destination La Quinta!

Latest weather report is giving a 50% chance of rain, so my first tri could be even more interesting (or miserable!) than I expected.

Well, did my very first Duathlon this morning.  I recently joined a local Tri club and this was their first event of the year.  A bunch of really good people!

It was a 2 mile run/ 12 mile Bike/ 2 mile run.  First off, it was an absolute blast - at no time did I have the feeling that I was going to drown and that is awesome.

I ended up finishing in 3rd place overall.  My first 2 miles running were done in 12:47 (6:20ish pace) - really didn't even know I had this type of time in me - it felt great.  Also I averaged around 19 mph on the bike, which is faster than I have ever averaged before and then my final 2 mile run was 14:30 (7:15 pace).

I have been racing a lot so far this year and putting in some pretty heavy training weeks.  This just goes to show that hard work and consistant training can lead to good results and I just wanted to share!

Krisko reporting in...it's been a while!  Several weeks back I got into it with my wife and realized she had some valid points so I decided to put training aside and take care of family/house stuff.  Travel and weather have provided more excuses to slack off.  I haven't swum (swimmed?) in about 6 weeks and just did 19 miles on the bike after a month off.  On the bright side, I've still been running 4 days a week as I've got a half mary in two weeks.

What about my Oly on May 15th?  Options are to soldier on and get through it or downgrade to a supersprint being offered.  If it were a sprint I would downgrade but the superprint is only 300yds/8m/2m...not sure what to do.  I'm going to swim 2 days a week and do 20 laps no matter how long it takes.  After a few weeks, I'll make a decision.  I'm kind of writing off the swim and hoping the wetsuit keeps me alive.

I'm off to read the whole thread and catch up.  Sorry guys!

Welcome back Chris!  That balance between training and family life is something we all struggle with time-to-time. I've learned that if you set expectations with the SO things go a lot easier. Oh and hire someone to do the yard work and house cleaningSmile  This sport is expensive.
