When is your marathon?
(The one I'm doing at the end of the month will be my first, so I'm really nervous & excited!)

Last year was my first marathon (December 2009, Honolulu Marathon)...and I plan to do it again this coming December.

I was really excited and nervous too.  But so long as you put in the training, you should be fine.  Start out slow, and enjoy it.  Word of caution though...if you trained hard, you will be surprised how great you feel on race day due to the taper.  My advice is to make sure that you stick to your pace no matter how good you feel...because it's actually supposed to feel "too easy" up till about the half way point...at mile 20 is where the "real" second half of the marathon starts...and you want to make sure you have enough left in the tank to bring yourself home strong.

Good luck...

Thanks for the advice!  I've definitely heard that, too - that mile 20 is the actual 1/2way point of the race.  I hear delirium sets in around mile 22.  I did my 20-miler last weekend (decided on a 4-week taper because I'm training with a group and the schedules didn't line up exactly for a regular 3-week taper), and boy, I did NOT feel like doing another 10k after that!  But I guess there's nothing left to do now but trust my training!

I would stick to the 3 week taper.  Just like you need to trust your training, you also need to trust that the taper will make the difference the last 10k.  I did my last 20 miler about 4 weeks before my marathon and had the same thoughs as you.  I was gassed as I finished that LR in a 10:35 per mile pace.  But I stuck with the program (I had a 2 week taper) and it was perfect...I ran my marathon in a 9:07 pace.  I planned ALL my LRs at 60-90 seconds slower than my goal pace like everyone mentions, but I had no idea if I could run a 9:10 pace for longer than 8 miles because I never did it.  Trust your training...and trust the taper.

Good luck...it's perfectly normal to have doubts...=)

I just noticed the final March results are in...92.5% for the TWISTERS that are still here.  That's impressive.  Even the bEASTies managed 86%...which is pretty good in itself.

But this thread here is indeed the "A" team.

Location: From Edmonton, AB but currently in Brandon, MB to be with my Mom
Tri Experience: This is my first year of training.  I found this site just recently and I thought it would be a great way to add some structure to my training.
2010 remaining races: Leg 7 of the K-100 Relay Race.  I don't have a tri scheduled for this year but I am thinking of trying one this fall.

Wow, a guy misses a day and a half and there is 16 pages of posts to catch up on.  Fun group!

Nothing accomplished so far this month because I woke up yesterday with a really bad cold.  Right now I am throwing everything I can think of at it because I need to get over this quickly.  Thankfully I hadn't scheduled any training for this weekend as I was going to bring my Mom home from the hospital for Easter weekend tomorrow.  Tuesday I will be back on track.

Happy Easter everyone!

I'm in Edmonton!! I go to UofA! Haha...its like we are neighbors...

Go for it Paul...just chillax and cruise the first few miles.  I find it funny that most times that I'm not "up" for a LR, I often feel the best after (probably because I'm proud that I got it in).  And the times where I'm totally stoked to do a LR...sometimes I feel a let down if I can't finish as strong as I hoped.

Counting down the hours here at work...

Pretty excited to play softball tonight.  The past few months I was in a total funk.  Triathlon trianing has totally screwed up my swing.  Since losing so much weight and shifting my workout focus from lifting heavy weights to endurance training, I lost a lot of power.  I used to be able to hit bombs using a 28 oz bat (and I would hit clean-up for almost every team I played on...aka...the power hitters spot).  But the past few months I was hitting so bad that I told all my teams to bat me last in the order...and rightfully so...it was embarassing.  However, last week I had to suck up my ego and drop back down to a 26 oz bat (which is the lightest they make).  But since then I've actually been able to start hitting the ball solid again.

So while triathlon training is awesome...it sucks for softball.  And often times I train before our games...so I'm not any faster in the field or on the bases.

ETA: in softball, you often fear the big dude with the beer gut who hits the balls into the trees...the slimmed down dude usually doesn't strike fear in the other teams minds.

rnihill - 2010-04-02 7:29 AM Good morning A-Team!  Frustrated that the kids wanted to wake up before dawn...  they are just too excited to be at grandma and grandpa's!  Thanksfully, my dad is making me coffee.

No training planned today, Friday is my usual day off so it works out well.  Today we have a busy day planned with a trip to the science museum, a trip down south of Buffalo to visit my husband's grandfather and then a Good Friday gathering here for dinner with all my aunts, uncles and cousins that I haven't seen in ages.

Happy Training today A-Team!!

Alright if you see a good looking guy riding his bike southbound give him a honk - it will be me!!!

Heading south soon...  I'll keep my eyes open for a guy on a bike that looks like a real muck racker.  Wink

Still at work - Sorry!!!  Where are you going BTW - I hope I am not being to nosy??

Actually only ended up needing to go to West Seneca to see his grandparents, instead of Lime Lake where their house is.

Tomorrow we are headed to Stockton to see my dad's new cabin.  Going by way of Fredonia I think to get some Ellicottville Brew food!

I will be as a ton of others....most will be signing up for 2011! There was a large group of donks doing Moo last year... and a handful doing 2010. The donks wear a jersey that has a big donkey head on the front and a carrot on the back, and you will hear an eeeeeeaaaaawwwwww coming from them!

I got a 6.3 mile run in today...was supposed to be 9 but cut it short due to running with my kids and slowing my pace and not getting my full stride. Just not in me today...but it was beautiful and I enjoyed the time with the kids! (2 younger ones on their bike and my 14 yr old walking and 12 yr old running better then me for her 1.5 miles!) Also thinking about my training that I have tomorrow, 5.5 hrs for an endurance clinic. We will do all three disciplines and measuring how much we sweat during each leg to help with nutrition. I can't wait! nothing like a 5 1/2 hour sweat fest!

Welcome, Darren! I've been off track for a while, too, but I'm hoping this challenge will bring me back. I almost had a full week of planned training for the first time since last fall, but I blew it today by skipping a short run. Not a crisis.
