Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() From Kim....it's quality over quantity (and a slew of talent of course)....haven't seen anyone drop run times like Twin on that mileage. From Birdy...don't let fear stand in your way...figure out a way to bust through it. From George....take a tough (family) situation and turn it into a passion. I love the foundation. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() mike6232 - 2010-12-27 11:07 AM Can anyone out there give me some advise on what to do for shin splints? Yowch! All I know is to get it solved right away, and don't push yourself too hard, or you'll get it again. I never had shin splints, so I don't know "what it feels like", but I've heard it happened to quite a few people. If you don't want to lose your endurance, consider Aqua jogging. I think you can still Cycle. And find out the cause (gait issues, shoe issues, too much too fast issues, etc etc) to avoid it from happening again. Am I wrong anyone?? |

Mike, Shin splits is actually a common term for many different running issues. You will need to be more specific on where you are getting the pain (i.e. 1/2 up my left shin on my left side after I run, etc.) for us to really give you much help. Some other questions that would also be helpful for: 1. How many miles on your current pair of shoes? 2. Do you know if you pronate when you run? 3. What model shoes are currently running in? 4. Any mileage deviations in your training over the last couple of weeks? Thanks Dino |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Deciding on a RACE QUESTION!! Okay, I'm starting to pick out races that I want to do for 2011. I would like to do a little more running races. I'm curious that if it's worth trying to do 4+ running races a year if I'm not looking to "win", but to PR. Or should I just do specific races? Hands down, I definitely want to do: IronGirl Triathlon Susan Komen Race for Cure (especially that my friend who is 35 just found out she has Breast cancer). Pumpkinman - Olympic Triathlons are yet to be determined, but a HIM is not out of the question. We'll see. I don't want to do it in Vegas though (it will get boring riding on the same course for training as it is for the race...that's just not my style!) I'm not sure if it's worth doing several other races where I'm putting down money and just get a medal (although that would be sweet to add to my collection - My Vegas Half Marathon medal weighs the same as 7 of my other medals COMBINED! It's damn heavy dude!), while it will give me the feel of a "training run". Is it worth to register for events like this? Or is it better to look for charity runs and use that to PR/Train hard? Some are $40 (is that too steep?), some are $10 and you still get a medal/goodies/T-shirt. Just needed your opinions on how to decide races. |

We have so many new people, hopefully it will allow everyone to get to know one another a little better and faster and get a little smarter about our sport......expect a question a day between now and the end of the year..... Pick any MG member, identify them and tell us what you learned from them this year that has helped you and how it's changed you.....realize this is harder for those who just joined, but jump in if you can.... i can't seem to pick out just one. i've learned so much from everyone here, including suzy. kind of reiterating what steve said about being a family, its amazing to me the relationships that develop here with people you've never met or met once or twice. its pretty cool. probably the most important things i've learned has little to do with triathlon. for example. lots of kids act certain way's. |

I've been thinking about this question. A lot. There are so many things I have learned from everyone. I will admit that when I really pressured myself to come up with things, there were 2 that stood out. One was from John -- and it's not just tri-related -- and that is to remember to smile. Now, I'm a pretty smiley person... but I do have my moments. Sometimes it's during workout, or a race, or a difficult parenting moment... I just make myself smile. Yeah, sometimes it's a grimmace, but sometimes something much better comes of it. Priceless. The second was from Suzy... and that was how to hydrate on race-day morning (particularly for a marathon) enough to race but not so much to have to pee early on (or hopefully at all). Important stuff!! Other than that... so much stuff. I kinda want to outline it all, but kinda don't know where to begin. Truly a fabulous group who always has something to share, in some way, shape, or form! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok. Only about 180 miles on my Brooks goast 3. I do not pronate. That is what I was told when I was fitted for the shoes. Went to Luke's Locker and they put me on a track to watch me run. Just started this type of training. I went from never running to 8 miles on my long run in about 3 months. Have not done a long run in about 3 or 4 weeks because of the pain. Edited by mike6232 2010-12-27 3:11 PM |

I went from never running to 8 miles on my long run in about 3 months. Have not done a long run in about 3 or 4 weeks because of the pain. Are you icing? Does the pain go away after running? I experienced shin pain in both legs in that same general area as I added mileage this fall. I was also pushing myself on speed. I find when I back off on the speed, the shin pain subsides. I pushed it too hard a couple of months ago ramping up. I scaled back to not running two days in row. That helped along with making my long runs 'easy' runs vs. maximum effort. I iced after every run too. My wife had shin pain as well and was diagnosed with a compartment issue which was fluid build up in the upper shin area just below the knee. She had to scale way back on running and go through a course of PT to address it. It this has persisted for 3 or 4 weeks, I would get it checked out. She did not do that until the pain was intense about 2 or 3 weeks after it started. It took longer to address it due to the delay I diagnosis. |

When I started really running (i.e. more than once a week) I developed really bad shin splints. I made sure I wasn't doing too much too soon, made sure I spent a lot of time on black-top vs. sidewalk (softer) and eventually they just went away as my body got used to running. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the help on this. Looks like I need to ice the leg and I may go see if I need different shoes. The link you sent me stated something about a tight calf muscle. I did have what I thought was a pulled muscle in my calf. Thought it was a result of the shin splints. Looks like it may have caused the shin splints. |

Being a part of their IM journey here on the MG provided lots of insight into the ups and downs to training at any distance. The comic relief from John, Trevor and others along the way was great so to not take all this crazy tri stuff too seriously. As for specific training or drills, the push ups during swim laps (suicides?) that Stanley suggested was something I have started doing and have seen an impact. I never figured triceps play such a key role in a strong stroke. And then there is Steve who provides a wonderful example of staying balanced and focused on the right things as life changing events require rethinking training and racing priorities. |
