So what are people's opinions about the spectator info they finally distributed today? My biggest issues are the cost of the spectator ferry wristbands (although I'm not completely surprised), and the fact that you can't walk in or out of the park - you either get a ferry wristband and stay in the park, or don't get one and stay out of the park and just see the short stretch through Ft. Lee. If you're going to make people pay that much for a ferry pass, you need to let them walk in and out of the park and see the whole race. I understand the concerns about spectator traffic at the south entrance of the park where bikes and runners are coming and going, but there is no reason that they can't allow and control foot traffic through the north entrance that brings you in at the top of Dykman Hill. I really hope they change that.

The spectator info is just way too confusing. The $50 ferry fee caught me by surprise. Probably best bet is to be in NYC, walk across the GWB and watch transition area from above. Then walk back and hang out and wait along the Greenway for the last few miles.

I t had sold out but with injuries there was probably cancellations. They are highly recommending staying at the host hotel. I agree with that because the logistics are so all over the place that at least the shuttles go to and from where we need to go. Last thing you want race weekend is walking all over the place getting stressed from the heat./
Im doing Rev3 half tomorrow. Hardest half iron in the world. Hoping to survive

Hi guys,

Really happy to see this thread.

Very excited here in Israel, it's going to be my first IM....

I wanted to ask a quick question- are you planning on swimming with full wetsuits or sleeveless ones?

Also, how thick are your wetsuits and do you have any recommendations for (relatively) cheep(er) ones?

Thanks!

Adam

Even though I was unable to get into this years race, I was planning on doing next years (if I get in).  However after seeing, reading the RD blog, and being familiar with all the logistical problems I am thinking I may pass on this race even though I live in the NYC suburbs.

Maybe its just me but even though this race is about me I am very concerned that my family would   have a miserable day besides waiting for me.

For them to have to take a 430AM ferry to get to the Transition area or wait till 10+ to get there, then to have pretty much no way to get out to get food etc is a problem, plus the ferry rides are about 40 minutes.  That goes without saying that the entire bike has ZERO spectators other than the beginning and end and turnaround...and cant imagine too much on the run......also last year around the same time the Hudson was polluted with sewage and nearly cancelled the NYC TRi

So even though this race is essentially in my backyard I have serious reservations.  With all that said, I hope I am dead wrong and the race reports are great

Either way good luck to all of you, and I am sure since it is still an IM it will still be a positive experience when its all said and done

Getting closer!

I just changed my reservations from the Jersey side to Candlewood suites on 39th.  Since the lovely wife is going to be deployed I figured I would try to make it easier on me.  I also like the idea of being able to bring my own food up from Virginia and cook for myself in the days leading up to the race.  I'll be going solo so I don't need to worry about anyone but myself.....and all you crazy BT'ers.

So does everyone know where they are staying?

I don't think spectators have to stay in the park -- they just can't WALK in or out of the park. So as I read it, if spectators want to cheer their athlete on the NJ side of the run in Palisades Park, the only way to get there is on a ferry with a full or half day Ferry wristband. They can take a ferry into the park and stay there as long as they want, then get back on another ferry and travel somewhere else on the course, where they would be free to go wherever they want... It seems to me the best way to view the bike course would be to travel by car, and best way to view the run would be by ferry. So spectators could, for example, drive to Fort Lee and park and view that part of the bike course, then go park in one one of the ferry lots and get on a ferry (with a half-day wrist band) to Palisades Park to view that part of the course, then leave the park on another ferry and go to the finish line viewing are or wherever else they might want to go... Still a bit of a logistical nightmare for spectators. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I certainly won't be asking or expecting my family to get up to catch a 4:30 am ferry to the swim start....

without a doubt, not a spectator friendly course.

Some thoughts...

I think you can just walk across the GWB to Ross Dock, so you don't have to rely on the ferries.

Not sure where one can spectate on the NJ portion of the run course. It's simply a road in the middle of a "forest" or with steep drop to the water. Definitely by that Dyckman hill, there's a side road that forks off, so that's probably a spot. Will probably be crowded. Wonder if they'll allow spectators to walk along the course.

Same thing for the bike. You're basically on a highway, and not sure how one would get to the highway to sit and watch. The beginning/end portion from Transition to the highway probably is best bet.

I'm really only counting on spectators for the final 10 miles.

I'm figuring on sleeveless. Water will probably be quite warm - they even said there's a chance it would be too warm to be wetsuit-legal, but they made the call already that they'd allow them.

Xterra wetsuits are good for the price. Get on their mailing list...they seem to send out "special deals" often.

Hi runnerx,

Thanks a lot!

I bought a Blue Seventy for New Orleans 70.3 but it's 4-5 mm.... I'll take a look at your suggestion!

Good Luck!

I checked out the volunteer stuff out of curiosity...

1) 2013 Race Registration: Volunteers will be the only individuals allowed to sign up for the 2013 Ironman US Championship before the general public. Volunteers will all be allowed to register on Sunday August 12, 2012 at the Athlete’s Village, at Pier 92 (52nd Street and the Westside Highway). Stay tuned for more details!
Interesting...they've been very quiet about the 2013 race. Was even wondering if they'd have it a second time. But it was definitely my understanding that current year athletes would not be able to sign up for 2013 the day before, like it is in other Ironman events. Not that I really want to...

2) LOTS of volunteer spots still open. That's not a good sign.

I asked if there was going to be any Athlete on-site sign-ups for next years race during the Directors FaceBook Q&A. the reply was "There will be no Athlete sign-up for 2013 on site".

As long as I get the tee-shirt and the "been there, done that" bragging rights I see no need to go again.

Another option would be to run a 50/34 with a 12-25 rear. This will give you the same gear options for those climbs, but the gears will be spaced much closer which would be great for this course as your gears will be much tighter and you won't have the huge gap from 19-21-23-25-27, and instead you will only switch one cog each time.

x2 on this, this is what I am planning on running.

Also, I must be missing why everyone wants to stay so close to the ferry departure? Its NYC, catch a cab! They are everywhere! Its not going to be like some of the other Ironmans in small towns where the athletes and crowd take over everything. We are a small number in the grand scheme, there will be plenty of transportation available.

I'm thinking it would be more beneficial to stay near the finish and have a nice room and shower available within walking distance. Freshen up, go get the bike, and head back to watch the late nighters come in.

Big training week for me last week topped off with a 16 mile run Saturday and a 90 mile ride/6 mile brick Sunday. Getting a little recovery in this week before The Ride to Montauk Century this weekend. Anyone else in the NY area doing that ride? This will be my 3rd year. Planning on TT'ing it with a little run after if anyone is going and interested, we have a nice little group headed up!

Shawn...even though it's the city that never sleeps, when you're trying to catch a cab at 3 or 4 am, there never seem to be any. Cabbies tend to be where it's more likely to have more people around. Might want to ask the situation when you book a hotel.

Rode the first few miles of the bike course on Saturday.  Good to see they re-paved the hill out of T1, its now nice and smooth which will be good  - certainly if you're coming into T2 downhill at a rate of knots.

I checked the climbing - looks like 3% av climb for first mile - first 800yds is steep,(6%) second 800yds is flat/gentle.  The real kicker is the hill just as you exit the Park, its only 300 yards or so but very steep.

Definitely need a 27 or 28 on the back I would say.

Great to hear this!! That road heading into Transition was horrible. And with the trees creating shadows, it was near impossible to see the pot holes.

I rode very gingerly down there as I still didn't trust the surface amongst the shadows, was fine though..a bit better than the last mile to T2 at HITS!!

Hi everyone.  I hope your training is going well.

I am curious if they have slightly altered the end of the run?  We will finish at 85th street in the park, instead of 81st, and it looks like we do a bunch of back and forths in the 90's.  I am not sure if this will have any affect on the difficulty but wondered if anyone else saw other changes to the course.

I'm reasonably sure that the run course map currently posted is the same one that they posted as the "official" course map a few months back - I'm certain that the double-out-and-back late in the race was there the first time it went up, because it jumped out as strange given that they could seemingly extend the top of the loop on the Jersey side by .25 miles and accomplish the same thing. Either they wanted to avoid a steep hill on the Jersey side by doing it this way (quite possible from what I observed running the course), or just wanted to set up a cool out-and-back in a nice park on a flat section near the end, to provide a spectator opportunity. This way is definitely going to be at least a little flatter than making the Jersey loop bigger.

So far so good with training, but six long runs still to go. I'm ready to get this over with.

Solid HIM (for me) last weekend (race report) left me feeling pretty good about the way things are going. Still have a lot of long bike & run miles to go to get to that IM, though.... I'm hoping I can get up to check out the course at some point over the next several weeks. How's everybody feeling??

x2 on that last (and first) mile of both the bike and the run. I expected to see lots of bottles strewn about. Just a couple.

FWIW, just saw that they changed the September HITS race in Cooperstown to Hunter for the second race there.

Excellent race. I learned alot from my Half couple weekends ago...it was an eye-opener. Changed my focus on my training. More hills. More running off of the bike.

And yeah, I've had those races where I'm swimming and swimming and I look up and wonder where the heck I am.

Don't know if I'll be up to another HIM in September after IMNY, but would love to try and beat my time on that Hunter course, by pacing properly and not going too fast on the bike...
