Not sure what's up with this, but I was planning on wearing some during the race. I'm going to keep thinking it will be allowed, but wanted to give an early warning so we won't be so outraged if they keep this rule thru IMAZ Is this during the swim or the entire race? There's been several races that are not wetsuit legal and you cannot wear compression socks or sleeves on the swim, but you can put them on in T1. |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread The ruling was no compression can be used during the entire race, from swim start to finish line. It wasn't only limited to calf sleeves, compression socks, and things that cover body marking, but also included compression shorts. It seems like a a rule that they threw in before thinking it through or even listing it in any documents. It was announced at the Eagleman pre-race meeting. Here's what I heard: The ban on compression gear at Eagleman was clearly stated as for "the entire race, wetsuit legal or not" based on the "WTC telling us so".
I was reading about it in this Slowtwitch thread |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread The folks at Eagleman had it completely wrong and Jimmy Riccitello cleared it up in the ST thread linked above. Compression gear cannot be worn during the SWIM for a non-wetsuit swim. It can be worn during the bike and run assuming you want to spend an extra five minutes in transition trying to get calf sleeves on wet legs. It's business as usual for wetsuit swims like IMAZ. |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread How is everyone doing? I was doing great. Following Fink's 30 week plan and had only missed one 45 min run in 7 weeks and then BAM, I get sick. Allergies turned into bronchitis. Missed a few workouts and others were real slow (in other words, my runs turned more into walks), but after going back in and getting stronger meds, I think I'm finally on the mend. At least it happened early. Train well folks. |

Veteran 784 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I been having some good solid days, just did first sprint and did it in 1:37:50, not too bad.....swim was ok, my bike was solid for me and also improving and I did well on the run....really started to see the Weds brick session payoff on the sprint. So I have a Oly in August which is really where I can see how im progressing. I also think the 2 days a week of lifting has really helped me out to.. |

Extreme Veteran 495 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Been plugging steadily along here... I saw a genius PT a couple weeks back for some 'running therapy'. She linked all 14 of my niggles back to muscle imbalances, and gave me some great exercises to get things firing properly. I'm already feeling a difference, and have added a couple of core classes every week to reinforce the PT. My hope is to get through the training injury-free, so I'm doing my homework! |

Expert 1083 The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread A 4 mile SWIM?!?! I'm in shock. No way I would have the discipline to train for that. I'm struggling to get 2 days / week in the water for IM! I'm doing good hitting all my bike and run workouts and mostly enjoying them. Swimming however is a different story, I've backed down from 3 to 2 days and will live with that for a while. Personally I have a lot more work to do (gaining speed and endurance) on land then in the water. |

Elite 3687 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Running has always been my limiter so I had the great idea to focus on run training January through May. Completely abandoning swim and bike training. Run was getting pretty good and I was very excited to start swimming and biking. Almost like clockwork I started having major issues with my Achilles. So now I have very little swim and bike fitness and all that great run fitness is slowing evaporating from three weeks of no running. Good thing it's still early. |

Veteran 341 Orangevale, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread They say it doesn't matter how much run fitness you have if you kill yourself getting through the bike, so make sure you don't skip too much of the bike training. I'm still training for Vineman 70.3 before ramping up the IM training. Hopefully my HIM base will get me started off on the right foot. Chris |

Veteran 820 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Training, what training, I've just been doing my own thing until my official training starts next mon. I have 3 25-27ish mile rides planned for this week with 1800-2000 ft of climbing in each one.
Well see if I get all three of them, because around here rides of that distance i'm lucky to see 500 lol. On another note, I hope my first official day next Monday is not delayed, I'm already looking to rewrite the schedule, tonight while doing some last minute preperations for our 10 day on the road camping trip I cut into my left pointer finger right across the knuckle and down to the bone. I got 10 or so stiches. They say to avoid swimming, especially in lakes, there goes my plan by doing my first 3 swim sessions next week in open water. I'm already looking to see what I can do to change them from the beginning to the end of the week. ohh well what do you do. |

Regular 138 Pittsburgh | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Things are going well around here for the bike and run. Just about where I expect to be. Had my first Olympic last weekend and my first HIM coming up July 15. I really need to figure out my swim though. Despite countless hours and work in the pool I was just 1 minute faster than my Oly swim PR last year. It's so frustrating! I'm still hanging around 2:20/100 for OWS and really want to get that down to 2:00 or better by November. |

I was sure I was ahead of pace for the first month, but the week before my long ride on Sat I thought I was behind in fitness. Then I had a strong ride, so thought I was where I needed to be, but then felt wiped out for the rest of the weekend so felt behind in fitness... (I shouldn't have been that tired) Oh well, I just knock it out day by day I guess. |

Veteran 784 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Question: I know many of us are using the FINK training program, so my question is does it matter what order you do your workouts in? For example on Friday I have a swim and a run scheduled, I usually do the workouts in order from left to right, (S/B/R). But its been really hot and I dont really want to deal with the heat on tomorrow, So i was going to run first than swim in the afternoon. so I was wondering are the workouts set up to do in a specific order or can you do them in any order (with the exception of the brick workouts) |

Unless you are gunning for the podium or a sub-10.5 hr finish, I would caution everyone to not over-think your training. Follow your plans as best you can, but make adjustments where necessary (such as flipping workouts due to temps, etc). I learned during last year's race that all my hard work was adequate, and I did not follow any specific plan to the letter. If you are just looking to finish (everyone's first goal, right?), then focus on endurance - do not worry about speed. That being said, do not 'tiptoe through the tulips' of your training - push yourself to go faster, longer. It is the ability to overcome when you feel fatigued or sore that will pay off on the second and third loops of the run at IM AZ. Now, if you are looking to crush dreams and qualify for the roll down list, then forget everything I said - in fact, why are you even reading this - you should be out on a track workout or century ride - get moving! |

Unless it's a brick, I do mine in whatever order works best for me on that day. If I swim at the pool, lap swim doesn't start until 8pm, so I usually run or ride when I get home from work and then go swim. If I'm swimming at the lake, I will swim first and then run or ride. And sometimes I will even switch the days I do the workouts if that fits better with my schedule. My main goal is to make sure that between Monday and Sunday, I get in all the workouts that are scheduled for that week.
And like someone else said, if you are following a plan - TRUST THE PLAN. Some days you will feel like you could go on forever and do the race today and other days you will wonder how you are ever going to get through the 112 mile bike ride. |
