The run was a no go today.  1st missed workout since after Christmas.  Hate it.  Stayed up too late last night, woke up, but could not toe the line.  Nothing I can do about that now.

I need a plan for next time I'm tired.

Hockey game tonight.  10:30 game.  Joy of Joy's.  Work tomorrow may drag.

Thanks for the swim feed back.  Slow is smooth.  keep my form.  All good advise for next weeks swims.

I'll try to make up some of the miles on the treadmill after my ride on Friday.

Had a really good run this morning, swam yesterday morning (only 600 yards because I woke up late... I need a new plan for that) and rode on the trainer for 30 min last night. I'm really enjoying the heart rate training so far (it's only been a few days, but...) Tomorrow is another swim in the morning and trainer ride at night, then I might take Friday off (or have a short run in the morning. or another ride when i get home.)

Everything's been going really smoothly, but then my work just told me we start mandatory overtime again in a couple of weeks. Argh! I like the money and it's really not that many hours, but that's always when my training goes downhill. Boo! So, I need to plan around it to keep it going. I will figure this out.

kathie - 2012-01-11 4:16 PM barbell training today. instead of a run. i just put off running for a while. just don't feel like it right now. training was frustrating. i really sucked. my muscles felt all tied up. it felt like there was a knot in them. again a gazillion lunges and squats. i used to love them but now i hate them because they show me that i've been lazy for way too long. tomorrow: pool. looking forward to that. sorry i'm not writing too much in here right now. work is crazy at the moment. should get back to it anyways... nite nite!

Kathie - I hope your time in the pool recharges you and lets you stay focused so work doesn't get you down.  Have a great day tomorrow!

Katie - Glad to hear that you had such a good run yesterday morning!  I don't know about everyone else - but the high you get from running is not only amazing but its addictive!  Keep it up!  How did that swim go?

Kevin - Love your spirit and dedication but I think you should cut yourself a little slack - only missing one work out in three weeks is a pretty good accomplishment and it has moved you closer to your goal of Kona or bust!  How'd the hockey game go?  Have an extra cup of coffee to get you over the hump.

Morning y'all:

Hope things are going well for you.  I hit the pool again today and got in almost 10 laps.  However - I can't seem to improve my time.  Right now, I'm averaging 3:16 per 100 yards. Question - now that I've hit the distance for my first tri in May, what are some specific things I can do to improve my speed.

Thanks in advance for your advice!  Have a great day!

David - I'm by no means an expert swimmer, but for me one of the biggest things was body position, i.e., keeping your head (& lungs) low in the water and keeping your legs and butt high so they're not dragging along behind you. There's so much more to it that I have no idea about but body position would be first and most important. Good luck!!! I'm still trying to work on that, plus not crossing my arms over my body, and improving my catch. I'm sure once I have those down I'll find plenty more!

I was in the pool this morning, 1000 yards. My flip turn skillz are the bomb, yo! Ha ha! After trying to teach myself to flipturn the last couple of times I was in the pool I think I now have it down so that it's less awkward. It makes me feel like a legit swimmer.

Yeah, I always took the perspective it wasn't how fast you were out of the water, it was how tired you were out of the water. I think in TI swimming they talk about swimming be no more difficult than walking. That is largely what I worked on. So don't think faster, think easier.

...1 10k, 1 HM, 3 Marathons (2 of them mountain), 1 50k, 1 50 Miler and 1 100 Miler. So mostly training for the 100 miler. The rest of the races are just to keep me interested.

I'm not saying they're correct, or pretty Tongue out but there was a "how-to" in a recent issue of Triathlete magazine and I did what it said. 1) do a half somersault when you reach the wall; 2) be close enough to push off the wall with your legs ; 3) twist your body up into the normal crawl position as you go for the surface. It took about 2 sessions. I was scared to try it before because I thought I would look goofy. And I do look goofy, ha ha! My times are exactly the same, but the reason I wanted to do it was because the same article said that it might improve your open water swim because you don't get that tiny rest at the wall you get with open turns, and therefore you're better prepared for the continuous OWS.

(Side note: I work right next to Zuccotti Park, where all of that original Occupy Wall Street stuff was happening, and whenever I saw all the signs and T-shirts and everything else that said "OWS" I kept thinking, "Why are all of these open water swimmers downtown today?")

Marathon-tough but doable!

Mountain marathon-getting a little crazy

50k-not in my lifetime

50miler-Crazy!

100miles-Better chance of me winning gold in women's figure skating at the Olympics!

That is one crazy schedule!! I applaud you for the determination to train and complete these races.

Almost makes me want to sign up for a marathon and a HIM!Smile

Ha that is too funny.

I tried for the longest time to get flip turns but I could never do it. I always felt that the bigger assist you get from swimming in the pool is the push off the wall.

I did a 100k in September 2010. Incredibly hill course. Took me 19 hours and 56 minutes. Doing the same course for my 100 miler, just three loops instead of 2. It is brutal at times....tough to compare to marathon running. Qualifying for Boston is clearly more difficult for me than running 100 km. IT is super fun though.

In Lethbridge. Mid September. It is an awesome race. Great support. Tons of aid stations. They have a 50k a 100k and a 100 miler. It is called the Lost Soul Ultra. Some people say it is the toughest one in Alberta.

BigDH - 2012-01-12 9:33 PM hey everyone, thanks for the motivation to get my butt out of bed and knock of 34k this morning, some of it quite fast.

That's a long run!  are you training marathon?

...1 10k, 1 HM, 3 Marathons (2 of them mountain), 1 50k, 1 50 Miler and 1 100 Miler. So mostly training for the 100 miler. The rest of the races are just to keep me interested.

DH - that's a lot of mileage!  Have you ever run a century before?  I would think that it would take someone almost 20 hours... I enjoy long runs but that is way out of my league!  Kind of puts that guy who you ran with last week - the guy who had qualified for Boston to shame...

Where are you doing the 100 miler?

In Lethbridge. Mid September. It is an awesome race. Great support. Tons of aid stations. They have a 50k a 100k and a 100 miler. It is called the Lost Soul Ultra. Some people say it is the toughest one in Alberta. http://www.lostsoulultra.com/

Man,you add the usual Lethbridge area wind and you could be in for a tough race!

Looks like a great course!
