![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by fgump My speculation is about the temperature, not about what the RD plans to do regarding the waves. Yes, if it is above 76.2, the following happens, per the Race Director: Just a heads up, if the temp is between 76.2 and 83.8 and you choose to wear a wetsuit, you will start in a wave we will add as the last wave (start time of 8:22am). It is my opinion (fgump) that this will lead to some heat-related issues on the run course. We have not had enough hot weather yet for folks to get their nutrition and hydration dialed in. fgump, that is a VERY salient point you bring up about an additional wave and the air temperature. If they do put everyone in a wetsuit in the last wave, then those people, who, because they want to wear a wetsuit even on such a hot day, are more likely than not to be slower on the swim and similarly slower on the bike and run. That would leave these people who might otherwise be starting the run course at 11am or noon, starting at 1 or 2pm and running through THE hottest time of day. Also, I know the RD mentioned the issues with hauling a bunch of wetsuits to T2. With the temperature as iffy as it is, you may have quite a few people bringing their wetsuit to the lake and making a lakeside decision to not use it and there will still be a lot of wetsuits to haul to T2. |

![]() | ![]() I am on the fence on the wetsuit/no wetsuit. I am in the 8:02 start wave. So, I am only looking at only a 20 minute difference. As a slower swimmer I tend to see a 8-9 minute time difference with vs without a wetsuit. I tend to also be a wuss when it comes to cold water anyway. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How do they know who wears a wetsuit? I guess if the wetsuiters are all in the last wave it's easy. But do they note it at the start who is in one and who is not? And is it noted somehow in the results? If we do end up with wetsuit optional it would be nice to know where you rank against the folks who raced under the same rules. |

Old 1 will definitely be in the bars, as will New Hill/Holleman. The bits of climbing on Avent Ferry, Sunset Lake, Optimist Farm, and Lake Wheeler are all offset by fast sections on each.Has anyone contemplated doing this course on their roadie instead? Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So how much faster are you guys on your TT bikes? I've been racing the last 5 years on just my old road bike because I swore when I got into this I was not going to spend a ton of money. I don't have aero bars or fancy wheels or anything. Since I don't mind coming in middle to back of the pack I'm OK with this. I'm just curious how much faster I could potentially be if I had a tricked out tri bike. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just freaking LOVE riding my tri bike, whereas my roadie just feels clunky. As for MPH differences, I have no idea. But I like riding the tri bike, so that makes me ride it and I feel hardcore on my tri bike :-) Stupid reasons, sure, but this is partly about having fun. And yes, I would definitely do this course on a tri bike if I had the choice (well, I do, and I am). |

I went from mid-pack to winning hardware when I moved to a good TT bike, for several reasons. First, I invested a bunch and wanted it to be worth it. Second, I was much better on the run. Third, I felt so much better during the ride that I would generally go longer during practice rides. I can probably get 2-3 mph extra on the TT, or about the same speed as if I had ridden in a pack on my roadie. Of course, this year I haven't ridden much at all, and have given up all that speed. It will be a long painful day. |

Ill chime in with a few comments about the bus/parking situation and wetsuits. First, the remote lots are located at White Oak Rec Area and Seaforth Rec Area. These lots are 6 and 4.5 miles away from the swim start. We have 500 parking spots at those two lots. I would encourage anyone that is not a local living to the west of Jordan Lake to park downtown and ride the shuttles to the start. Pea Ridge Rd (road that the park is on) will be closed 1.8 miles from transition at the closest intersection and no athletes will be driving into the park race morning. Police will be staffing this intersection. In order to make this work, we need the busses to have a clear shot race morning and cannot have other cars trying to figure out where to go on that road. We will bus spectators back to the remote lots and downtown after the swim portion, or as soon as we get enough space to safely get the busses out. There is only one road in/out so they will be using the same road the cyclist will to leave. The "Getting Around Guide" on the website has this information along with road closure info in it. Wetsuits... Cooler than normal temps have everyone anxiously waiting to see what the temp will be race morning. WE will take the official reading race morning around 5:00am. We will not use the Army Corps temp. That is a great resource leading up to the race to get an idea where the water is at. Race week we will take our own temp readings and post them on the Facebook page and announce them at the pre-race meetings. Due to the shallow body of water at Jordan Lake, the water temp can change rather quickly. We should have a much better idea where we are at race week and will let people know. Just a heads up, if the temp is between 76.2 and 83.8 and you choose to wear a wetsuit, you will start in a wave we will add as the last wave (start time of 8:22am). Looking forward to a great inaugural event in Raleigh. Brian Myrick Thanks for chiming in Brian. It sounds like if someone wanted to drop competitors off at race site on race day, the closest they would be able to get is 1.8 miles and you would have to walk the rest of the way. Or ride the shuttles from Raleigh all the way to T1. Am I reading that correctly? Hey locals, what's the latest thinking? Are you going to try to use the remote lots and take the shuttle in on race morning? I haven't heard anywhere when those shuttles begin. That would be the only hitch if they don't start early enough to get us to the swim start with plenty of time. |

![]() ![]() | ![]() The shuttle schedule has been on the official schedule for a while now, and the getting around guide has the info, as does the athlete guide. It was also included in several email sent to athletes. Shuttles from T2 (Downtown) to T1 from 4:00am to 5:30am for athletes and spectators, continuing until 6:10 for spectators only. We need the athletes on a shuttle from downtown by 5:30 am to get them to the site and have time in T1 before we close transition at 6:45am. Shuttles from remote lots to T1 from 4:45am to 6:15am for athletes and spectators. We will get spectators back to the remote lots and downtown as soon as we can safely get the busses out of Vista Point. This should be around 9:15am, making the arrival time downtown between 9:45am and 10:00am. |
