cheekymonkeys1 - 2012-12-29 1:40 PM Can you elaborate on 'racing smart'

Oh that's a tough one! I actually raced the race. I didn't go out to fast and die early. I paced everything well, didn't over do the bike so I still had something left for the run. But I still biked strong. On the run I didn't have to walk like I usually do. I slowly increased my run pace over the course of the 10k, and each mile was slightly faster (unless there was a hill), HR increased a little over each mile. I guess the fact that I was able to have a strong run (for me) means racing smart.

For me racing smart is different for the different distances I compete at. Sprint = redline from the gun. Oly = pace the swim and the front half of the bike, redline the back half and the run. Iron distance is about hitting your predetermined metrics. I tend to get way too antsy on longer events and push my HR too much, so racing smart = restraint.

For me my biggest accomplishment was giving up control of my training. Pure and simple it has led to multiple PRs this year.

For the rest of you that have raced at IM distance, would you all say restraint is one of the keys?

kr140.6 - 2012-12-26 8:11 PM Hi everyone! Hope holidays have been great.  My family and I took a red eye back from Alaska (my sister lives there)....I am trying to load a picture of her snow bikes!! Very fun

Yes!  I want to see snow bikes!

Oh thanks for asking! I am totally inept on the computer BUT I did manage to load it into my "album" on my blog... so if you go on my log it is the only pic in the "album"!

Yah, I can't figure out how to load photos either!

Very cool, those are some big tires. What was it like to ride? Do you have control with tires that big, or was it challenging to stay upright?

TOTALLY! I was just telling my sister that the absolute hardest thing for me when training for the ironman was knowing when to BACK OFF... it was hard to know when to run slower or have the bravery to skip a workout (which is harder for a lot of us than the opposite).  I did the whole race without any sort of watch or timing device at all and overall was happy with my pacing (took it easy basically the whole way, knowing it was a long day!) ... that being said I do think I could improve with more attention to pacing.

Congrats to your successes this year as above! and thanks to Kelly for coaching you well.

It was really really hard to balance! There are no clip ons so only pushing down and real slow as you can imagine.  It was truly a winter wonderland.

rizer22 - 2012-12-29 11:19 AM Looking back on 2012, lets hear everyone's biggest accomplishments, whether it just be memorable or a PR etc
For me, 2012 was not all that great a year. But I PR'ed my 5k in March, (20:36), after taking 10 weeks off after shoulder surgery. Pretty much ran a few times heading into the St Patricks Day race. 25th overall out of 650, and 1st in 30-34 AG. Looking to break that 20 min 5k this spring with some training. How about the rest of you?

Finished my first and second HIMs. Both of them I had faster MPH on the bike and time/mile on the run than my best Olympic. PR'd my HM on the same course by over 13 minutes. PR'd my 5K by over 1 minute. 2011 to 2012 I'm going to end up with over 1300 more miles on the bike and 200 miles running.

2013 I'm looking to do two more HIM's. I did 5:42 and 5:49 last year. I'd like to break 5:10 this year.

I don't know that "restraint" is the right word-- you're still pushing yourself throughout the entire race but it is really important to pace it properly.  Crowie puts it best -- "if you spend your pennies too early you're going to run out."

Generally IMs are raced at just below aerobic threshold.  When I race I have a HR target, a watts cap, a HR cap and a watts cap.  My goal on the bike is to stay within a given HR and watts range on the bike (HR always controls over watts).  I also have a HR and watts cap -- numbers that I don't go above no matter what.  This often requires sitting up and spinning on the hills but its worth it.  "Gaining" 5 extra minutes on the bike can easily cost you 30 minutes of the run.  There's no better feeling in an IM marathon than running by all the people who blew out the bike.

This is such a good point.  The amount of training you can do is not the amount of time you have, but the amount of training you can recover from.  If life is crazy and you're completely shot, its more important to rest than to force yourself through a workout you won't be able to recover from.

My accomplishments for 2012:  This sounds stupid but getting use to clipless pedals and doing three sprint tris and two half marathons.

Snow expected today, so I moved a run test I was meant to do tomorrow to today.  I still have some of my speed, but my main limiter is endurance.  I have a fairly easy week ahead of me, and am doing a 5K on Sunday.  I did this 5K last year, and am hoping to beat my time from last year.  I also did the race before I got pregnant, and while I would like to beat that time, it's unlikely.

As for accomplishments, this one is a tough one.  The last month and a half has been the best in that I've managed to run 4 x per week consistently.  This is a huge accomplisment, given the fact I have been so sporadic since I've had my daughter.  I'm hoping on the athletic front that 2013 is a better year for me.  I'm looking forward to 2 half marathons, one in March and another in June.

I may try this Whole30 thing, as my diet is abysmal.  I eat tons of carbs, snack a lot on more carbs, and I have ridiculous amounts of sugar. I feel like I am always hungry and I am rarely full.  I eat a lot, and I don't make the best choices.

This morning I had an enormous bowl of raisin bran, snacked on wheat chex, ate some of my daughter's leftover waffle.  For lunch I had canned chicken with a little mayo and pita chips, and I've also had two cookies, a graham cracker with a glass of skim milk, and a cup of tea with sugar.  Tonight my husband is making pizza.

My husband does all the cooking, and he eats healthier than me as well.  He had four pieces of fruit yesterday.  I had none.

I really don't know if I could do the Whole30 thing, as I don't cook, but I really would like to try it.

This is a typical American diet...and why so many people have health issues.  Too carb loaded.  And even if you can do a complete Whole30 anything you could do would be better!  Laughing

Not stupid at all.  Clip less pedals can be tough to get used to.  My first year is clipless I kept falling over -- lots of low speed crashes.

Thanks, Kelly.  It seems like such a basic bike thing, but I wouldn't get them for the longest time because they scared me.  But everyone kept telling me they would help so I got them.  I had one really bad turn with them on a road where I wiped out on a sandy spot and couldn't unclip fast enough.  I had the biggest ugliest bruises you'd ever want to see from that incident!  So when I finally got the hang of it, I was so relieved.  That fall almost made me ditch them.

Carrie that is a very nice and kind thought... but if I did it this year I don't think I would be able (or be around) to enjoy my new friends in the years to come.

I was wondering, why would they do an Ironman in Muncie. I mean I get Ironam Florida, Texas, Wisconsin...but Muncie???

For years there was a very successful race in Muncie called the Muncie Endurathon.  It was run by a local Indiana race directing organization and the reputation of being a top notch independent race.  When WTC decided to dramatically expand its 70.3 brand (the number of WTC 70.3 races had doubled in the past few years), it found that it was easier to buy well run, well liked and popular local events rather than try to start a race from scratch.  Muncie was one of the races WTC purchased (they also purchased Boulder, Galveston, Mooseman, Vineman 70.3 to name a few).  In addition they re-negotiated a lot of their contracts with existing races to essentially create a more consistent product.

Thanks for that. BTW, I heard Mooseman is no longer in existance. Too bad because that was in my neck of the woods.

Mooseman is no longer an Ironman race, however the course itself still has a race going on. It's now Newfound Lake Tri and will be the first weekend in June. There's also Fairlee, VT with new races this year, too.

Laughing. Am so with you. I was famished last night at 2AM. I also ate a huge bowl of Raisn Bran and then a turkey sandwich.

Accomplishments for 2012:

Since I have never done a Tri, I can leave that out. I did a number of road races but they were awful due to injuries (which is why I think I am hanging up my cleats) and insufficient training (which is why I joined BT). BUT, I have been training consistently since Sept for my HM, I began taking swimming lessons and have been swimming consistently (slowly argg), and I have a definite goal (HIM) for Sept.

And, after having been introduced and really paid attention to over the past couple of weeks the idea of the importance of proper nutrition, I passed up on Buck's Naked BBQ Sweet Potato Fries and had a baked sweet potato instead. If you don't know Buck's Sweet Potato Fries, the aforementioned IS a big deal.

Do you know the distance? Is it still a 1/2 or Full? I am doing a sprint in May and June and am thinking of doing the REV Oly in July/Aug in ME before the Pumpkinman.

And to add to that, I sprained my left ankle back in August ... because of that I could not clip out of the pedals without causing further pain/damage, so have been on the trainer since.  It is still tweaked, and that left ankle is the one that I clip out on for stops ... That will be very difficult to change if I need to.

I should probably be practicing with my right foot now on the trainer ....

Now this is the kind of nutrition advice I can relate to! I recognize that the nutrition discussion several of you are having is valuable and worthwhile, but I'm not there yet. For me at least, baby steps. Maybe I'll see the error of my ways when the rest of you leave me gasping by the side of the road...I did manage to get in a swim today here in my hometown of Cornelia, GA. Who knew they built a really nice indoor pool facility a few years ago? Glad I brought my suit!

At least you and others recognize the need to improve nutrition.  Even baby steps are steps in the right direction!

Morning everyone.  We have about 10 inches of fresh powder on the ground this morning.  Should make for an interesting run this afternoon.  I'm going to break out the Yak Trax and play in the snow.

What's on everyone's plate for today?
