It was great to get away & recharge. I didn't get my run in on Saturday, but made up for it with all the walking I did! I hate those times you think there has got to be something wrong with your bike, but there isn't. I think every time I ride into a strong wind I look down at my back tire at one point as I'm sure it's flat (but it never is). Carla, that's a serious ride! I'm starting to be concerned about my hill training on the bike for Kansas. I've got to get out on some hillier rides in the next couple of weeks. It's FINALLY starting to warm up here, which is good. I need to get out of the pool and do some OWS, but am not willing to risk hypothermia! Bill-glad you've decided to take another shot at BQ'ing, I know you can do it!! Brian-how's your PF?? God, that really sucks.
I'm doing better the last couple days. Inflammation is down so I'm going to start trying some heat to get the blood flow down there. I may have to scratch my Xterra this weekend and probably KS 70.3 though. Not supposed to start running again till Thurs. We'll see then. Thanks for asking Ali. How did you like my hometown?
Have a good trip Ken and good luck to those racing this weekend!

Not much here. I've been having trouble walking in the morning so I wasn't looking forward to working the LTF ride saturday. I was relieved when I was able to cancel it due to the weather. Rested, iced, rolled, and rested some more. I worked on my bikes a lot. Got the quarq swapped off my road bike and onto my old P3 that is now my dedicated trainer bike. Set that up and switched around some hydration options. It's running SUPER smooth!! My wife barely has to turn up the tv to hear it while I ride in the living room with my KK RnR and my Lasko air mover! Really happy about that. I did ride for an hour on Sunday, but had to really watch my pedal stroke. Any mashing at all hurt, had to keep it smooth! Sent an email out this morning to coach to see how we move foward, but I know some of my races are going to get scratched. |

Good for me I guess, although my swimming could use some work. Since I will be driving down, I may be a bit slow to respond this week, but will when I can. We leave tonight after work. Safe travels! Have an awesome trip and race! Again, I am so disappointed that I won't be volunteering at the race and get to meet you and Robin. Quite a few people in my tri club (Seminole County Triathletes--green and white kits) are doing the race or volunteering. Unfortunately I am going on vacation the following week and just cannot give up the entire Sunday because I need it to get ready to leave. Enjoy it! |

Carla and I along with another friend did a very challenging ride today (especially for early season riding). I tried out my new cassette (11-28). It is great! I really appreciated the 28 on some of the climbs. 73 miles completed today. Elevation gain of 3836 ft.

Becky - congrats on a great sprint (especially after your bike the day before)!!!!
My training was non existent this weekend - planned to take Saturday off as their was lots of kids stuff going on. Sunday woke up w/ stomach/GI issues that lasted ALL day - so bagged my trainer ride. Steady rain today, the short BRIC will have to be done at least partially indoors. Putting my race tires on today - woot! When do you leave for Florida Robin? We leave Wednesday night - get to FL Thurs mid day. Staying at the Hampton Inn in Winter Haven, but my folks will be at an RV park in Haines City. How about you? We should find a way to meet up! We are leaving tomorrow after work, driving down in our motor home, we hope to be there afternoon Thursday as well. We are staying at the RV park near Cypress Gardens. Maybe we can plan on going to race registration at the same time Friday and meeting up there? That sounds like a long ride down! I may not be around Fri. - Originally, hubby was going to take kids to Disney World, but as he looks at the weather forecast he is trying to convince the kids a water park is the way to go. If we do Wet n Wild instead - I may go and lounge at a cabana! I will PM you with my contact info and keep you updated on schedules. |

Last couple weeks, it was getting "warmer", but still very nice at 80s to 90s. It just started to hit pretty high today. :-( Why the sad face? Because that means I have to get up at 4am for a ride... so quit 'plaining. :DAnother cold morning run this morning with frosty eyelashes. Its May 13th for gosh sake! You bring up the new cassette and I've seen some comments on that in other groups, but never really understand it. What is the advantage or disadvantages of different cassettes? Thanks, Todd
A bigger rear cassette can make climbing a little easier, by keeping your cadence a little higher and transfering power more efficiently to the road when the grade gets steep. Especially, if you have a standard front chainring. It really depends where you ride. Here in Illinois I never leave the big chain ring of my standard and run an 11-23 cassette. That works out just fine. But in the mountains I leave the top chain ring plenty, and would have benefitted from an extra low gear of an 11-28. A compact front ringset would have been better too. A bigger rear cassette can make climbing a little easier, by keeping your cadence a little higher and transfering power more efficiently to the road when the grade gets steep. Especially, if you have a standard front chainring. It really depends where you ride. Here in Illinois I never leave the big chain ring of my standard and run an 11-26 cassette. That works out just fine. But in the mountains I leave the top chain ring plenty, and would have benefitted from an extra low gear of an 11-28. A compact front ringset would have been better too. Good explanation Brian, I will add the following. I had the conversation around gear choice with my coach Sunday. I run a compact on the front. A compact means the gears on the front have fewer teeth so it is an added benefit for climbing. We decided to go with the 11-23, even thought the course is hilly for Florida, I still think I have plenty. It is the gearing I use the last 3 training rides that had about 2600 feet of climbing over 55 miles. Although it is more important to have plenty of gearing for the ride or race you are doing, there is some benefit to a tighter gear pattern. That benefit is smoother shifting since the jumps aren't as big. |

So, good luck to all those racing this weekend and I will try to back up on my reading a bit. My best bit of training last week was actually getting out on my bike, by myself for a ride on sunday morning. I went out early so the roads were quiet and I was able to get back before my son managed to rouse himself from bed. result. I'm thinking I'm going to have to start thinking about nutrition . So far I've managed just with water but I've never ridden more than 21/2 hours. I will read back all the posts and see what you all say before I ask questions we've already discussed. Really - best of luck to you all. Jennifer |

I have to say, reading all your times, mileages, hill climbs, and trainings are really motivating me! I didn't realize how kind of lax I have been on my trainings. I am starting to push a bit harder now. I have been content to be just where I have been for my times. Wanting to do better, but honestly, I just haven't truly put in the effort. My run this morning was OK. But on my swim, I did clock a 1:40 for one (out of 10) of my 100's today. I have been content with anything under two minutes. I am so glad I joined this group! Thanks for the re-newed motivation. Keep posting! Edited by ritakandel 2013-05-14 6:43 PM |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN ritakandel - 2013-05-13 6:46 PM DJ - I wish I could 10 mpr up hil, especially your hillsl. I struggle at 6 mpr sometimes... Working on it though. I took everyones advice and meshed it all together for my ride today. I tried to work hard and have fun! I did have my bike fitted last week, which helped. Today's ride was on a really hilly course (for me) (It is the OC Tri course), focused a little bit on spinning, a bit on the lift up, and mostly on pedaling hard keeping with a constant smooth rhythm. I felt power! Yippee! I was flying by my cycling partner. Ok, maybe not flying, but I was able to go her with ease and it is not the power most of you are talking about, but my pace was 13.6 mpr. I had a 13.8 on Friday on a flat course. So I am happy. Granted I was exhausted when I was done. I did just a 10 minute brick after and was had nothing. Yet, I felt some success with power which has open up my eyes for future training. Well, it looks like I was being lazy with a "sissy la la" pedal after all. I also has a moment that I was going 39 mpr down hill which is the fastest I have ever gone- even for a moment. I don't expect any gains for my try this weekend, but it will all help for my HIM training. You'll get better, just keep at it. :D That little "hill" was very gradual climb, tame compared to most of the hills that I'm used to...I was just kind of flabbergasted that I was going 4-6 mph SLOWER than normal. |
