![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I met with my swim coach today! She's seems great. We talked a bit, and then got in the pool for some time to see what I needed to work on and where we should start. She thought my stroke was pretty good, and didn't need much work to start off. What I do need to work on is body position in the water, breathing, and kicking. Definitely need to work on flexibility there- I don't get a lot of propulsion out of my kick. It was funny- she had me kick on the side to get a better position for taking breaths, and I'd sink because I couldn't kick hard enough to stay afloat in that position. I was laughing and coughing up the water I snorted at the same time. We'll be meeting again soon. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by SSMinnow Originally posted by WoodrowCall Originally posted by SSMinnow I've gotten a lot more comfortable over time swimming with other folks in an OWS. I've found that as my swimming improves, especially my ability to hold a strong pace, I've gotten much more comfortable. When I first started, getting knocked in the face by a stray arm or foot, or getting pushed under, bothered me. But, now that I know that I can recover and swim hard when I need to, I'm less worried about swimming around others. As far as the yellow zone goes, it does seem to be unavoidable, but I think there are a lot of factors to consider, like the length of the swim, and your given pace. In a sprint, I usually don't have much time to consider water conditions, it's just a matter of going hard until the last buoy. In a HIM or IM, placement in the water does seem to matter more to me, especially since straying a little off course into flat water can add significant distance to the length of the swim. Overall, I think OWS is all about confidence that gets developed by a lot of time spent swimming. On the swimming note, I recently saw a video that goes through some common freestyle swimming mistakes; I thought it would be useful for those of us working on our technique: http://runoften.wordpress.com/2014/01/03/common-freestyle-swimming-... I got in a very cold 7 mile run this morning; I think it was about 15 degrees, cold enough that my toboggan was a little frozen where I had sweated under it. A hot shower and a cup of coffee felt great afterward, though! I found this article on swimming really interesting. As a weaker, somewhat frightened swimmer, I usually am in the yellow zone to avoid a lot of the chaos and chop, but am rethinking that. What does the group think? I agree with this statement assuming you meant a low of OWSing. I believe the mistake I've made the last two years in IM is not doing enough of it in a larger group. We have ample opportunities in Madison so I plan to change that this year. What is a tobaggon? in these parts, it is a sled! I can't imagine sweating under such a vehicle. hahaha. I had to look it up to make sure I wasn't an idiot; apparently here in the South, that's a word we use for a warm winter hat, like a beanie. I've never run under a sled, but I don't think I'd like it very much! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jamie-I knew exactly what you were talking about. Bet you Northern folks don't even know what "stove up" means Its a combination of stiff and sore! Used in a sentence: Jethro was all stove up after a long day of logging in the woods. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Being from the outskirts of Appalachia (southern Ohio), I know both meanings of toboggan. ![]() Now, a new one to me when we moved to Georgia 10 years ago was "swoll." My husband and I attended a middle school football game my first year teaching in the district and ran into some of my students. The next school day, my students said, "Ms. S, your husband has some swoll calves." I had to ask for a definition or at least some context clues. Apparently, his calves are very muscular. You know, 'swoll.' Went for a massage today to see if, perhaps, my knee pain may be muscle related. She found some weird stuff going on with the muscle groups in the back of my knee, so here's hoping. I'm going to go to the gym tomorrow and sit on a bike (BORING) and see how my leg will feel on the elliptical. Back to school/work on Monday. I'd like another vacation, please. I really don't want to grade essays. Jamie...this is probably too personal (but since you threw it out there first! ![]() Edited by glfprncs 2014-01-03 3:10 PM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My favorite Northern/Southern vernacular mix-up was a time I traveled to Washington DC for a teaching conference. I went with another teacher, who's a really nice guy, but doesn't travel often or very far. We stopped at a burrito place; I got a burrito (of course, a giant one) and I could tell the joint was a bit of a new experience for him. But he ordered and we sat down. We both had huge burritos, but then I noticed that he had a tiny little glass bottle of Coke, noticeably too small for the dinner he had. I asked him about it, and he said that he had ordered a Coke, but wasn't sure why he hadn't gotten a cup for a fountain drink like me. I cracked up, and figured that he meant the Southern version of Coke, which basically encapsulates all soda. For instance, "I'm going to grab a drink, do you want anything? "Sure, I'll have a Coke." "Oh ok, what kind would you like?" "A Mountain Dew" That's how it usually works around here. I couldn't stop laughing as he sipped from that tiny little bottle! Randy & Nancy-I'm definitely familiar with Stove up and Swoll! Nancy-She is definitely Gus-approved; she even has two labs of her own ![]() |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got back about 30 minutes ago from my first ride around the block with the new Fuji. For those looking at my log and thinking "huh" when it looks like a run, I battled hills the whole way and strava blew up the time log halfway through when I had to get non-fingerless gloves but couldn't find any that weren't designed to throw snowballs. :P Because of that, the final mileage and split times (which I keep for my own reference) had to be calculated manually (and even guesstimated in one case). Regardless, it's gonna take a lot of time to get comfortable with this bike. I'm not sure if its nerves after being gone for so long, the hills I had to contend with, or both (likely this one), but I was almost ultraconservative on that ride. Up to the point that I rode the brakes all the way down some hills, even though I get a feeling that is a bad idea. Hills are easy to work with; they just take time. Nerves are different. I've had a perpetual fear of getting hurt for over 15 years now. That isn't a bad thing in of itself because it kept me off skateboards, ski slopes, BMX bikes going down Stone Mountain, and free running. My family appreciated that as I was growing up since I seldom had to tap into health insurance. However, the risk comes with the territory and the nerves has been getting to me. If you figured I'm not one that enjoys losing control based off that, you'd be correct. I'm no quitter, but I recognize the irony of having such a mentality with sports such as this. Swimming and running has never been an issue since I can control every move made. When it comes to biking, I have to hand some of that control over to the bike itself. If something happens that I don't expect, I may or may not be able to compensate. While I'm not as bad as I used to be, the very thought of that makes me nervous still to this day. With that said, let me ask this. When you all got going on road cycling, how did you go about getting comfortable with it? For those who understand what I'm dealing with, how did you overcome it? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bryan I think you will get more comfortable to more time you spend working with your bike in situations that are familiar. I can share three experiences that might help you. First, when I first got clip pedals on my hybrid (yes hybrid) bike I went to a trail where there was NO traffic to contend with an clipped in only one shoe at a time. I did this multiple times before I decided to clip in both. Easing into it was important to me. When I was comfortable enough I went onto the roads. DId I sometimes forget and fall? Yep, but I got back up and kept going. Important. Second, when I first started riding a road bike with clip on aero bars I was terrified I would fall. Things felt so unstable. For a very long time I rode with only one arm in aero position. Crazy, right? It took me the entire season to get to the point where I felt sort of comfortable using both. Again, I started on roads with very little traffic so that I didn't have to worry about that element. I never fell due to the aero bars. Third, I bought a Parlee Tri Bike last Spring. It is significantly more aggressive than the road bike with clip ons I used for the 10 years prior including three IMs. I was petrified. I took that bike out on a very windy day and made a critical error. I fell and broke four ribs. After healing it took me a couple of months to even get back on that bike. When I did my first ride, I never used the aerobars. Second, same thing. I thought I had made a huge mistake in buying it. I finally told myself I could do it and started slowly. Little by little, I felt more comfortable in that position. I rode it in IM this year and had zero issues. It will come. You need to start slowly, give yourself a little slack, but also push yourself beyond your comfort zone. I am sure you can think of several other times in your life where you were petrified and overcame it. YOU CAN DO THIS. |

Talk about weather change. I am not a big tech guy. I log my workouts here and on a program called Raceday that my coach uses. I use an old Garmin 210? that works some times but not always. I use the power meter because my coach makes me....... I haven't trained in two days because of the travel. I have a lot of energy right now. Might try to burn some of it tomorrow morning. Well done, Sparty. I was cheering on my fellow Big Ten school (I'm a PSU alum). I figured you were a PSU grad. Same year as me too. Sorry about the loss of your coach but I think he showed that it can still be a premier college job. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Man, I'm missing a ton, I know! I don't get on the computer as much these days, and it's a PITA to read and post on my phone. Logging workouts: BT, Garmin, and Dailymile (for my running). Rene: So good to see you here again. Chris: Hope the reentry into training is smooth and complication free! Nutrition: Haven't done anything beyond an Olympic distance. We were quite spoiled on that one Oly though, support wise. Lots of water stops with fruits and even plates of salt! I need to pay attention to this conversation, for sure. On the shorter ones it's liquid and one or two GUs or shot bloks. Erika: I understand your special care for your knees. Nothing like a little tweak of a bad run to irritate them enough to keep you down for a week or two! Running shoes: I've been experiencing some pain my left foot, on the outside where I feel a bone. I know it's because that foot rolls out, and the Brooks Pure2 put a squeeze on the point of my foot. Promise to never be such a cheapa$$ about not changing my shoes when they don't feel right EVER again. Went out and pickup up a pair of my beloved Adrenalines. Suzy: Yay for a successful surgery for Paul! Randy: Not even braggy. I don't even care if anyone thinks it is, I just think it's amazing, important information for me as your mentee. ![]() Mary: You are amazing. Bryan: What a gorgeous bike. I love the colors. Weather: It's hot as a pistol here 24/7. I can never use weather as an excuse for not training. Unless we're experiencing a typhoon, of course. Funky expressions and words: No idea what you guys are talking about! We have our own, for sure. Oh goodness. I'm tired now, haha! Ran 10 miles today with my run buddy. In the wrong shoes, it was excruciating. I'm paying for my cheap ways. I went and bought a proper pair. Now I just need to get my left foot feeling better. Tomorrow I have a trail run of 2.8 miles. It's short, but beautiful and painful. Totally challenges all the muscles in your body. I felt like a jungle cat bounding from rock to rock, clearing streams and such when I ran it last year. I love trail running! Hope you're all having a fabulous weekend! Edited by Blanda 2014-01-04 5:04 AM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Long run done on the TM this morning. Keeping fingers crossed I can sneak away for a short swim later this afternoon! Things are looking a little grim in the weather department for the Packer Game! This is the Monday forecast, but Sunday is only a touch warmer. All schools are already closed for Monday.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Busy training day here. 1.5 hour bike; 2100 swim and first strength training session in a long time. Going to have to make those a regular part of my training to help with the muscles/strength imbalances. I'm going to shoot for 3-4 sessions a weeks during the "off season" totalling about 1-1.5 hour/week. We are suppose to have record lows on the Gulf Coast early in the week. Monday high of 38 and low of 17. Nothing to compare to many of you but plenty cold for me! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How is everyone doing on the East coast? Is it as bad as it looks like on TV? We will also have lower temperatures for Texas next week. It snows here about every 20 years or so. Blanda, how was your trail run? You need to post pictures of where you workout and live for the new people to see. I'm going to sleep well tonight. Swam 3000 yards, biked 1.5 hours and ran 25 minutes. The swim was supposed to be done on Friday but the pool was closed. Tomorrow is another swim lesson. Hopefully we can make some progress on figuring out how to fix the swim. Edited by Catwoman 2014-01-04 7:59 PM |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello everyone- Unfortunately work has been all consuming the last few days since returning from the holiday break and I have been neglectful of checking in here and keeping up. I did just catch up on all the reading. Having lived everywhere from the Midwest to the Deep South I was familiar with many of the vocabulary fun facts. Although I do have to admit “swoll” was a new one for me! I was really bummed about having to move the start of my swim lessons back and still not having started on this whole pool work thing yet. Only a few more days though! So far it’s been just biking on the trainer for me since the New Year. I did get to ride a little over an hour this morning. Just an easy spin to start getting things going again. I can tell it’s been six weeks since my hiatus for surgery started. The last few rides have definitely shown it is going to be a few weeks before I can start doing any real work outs. Good lord I was pushing upper zone 2 to lower zone 3 just to maintain cadence on a pretty easy gear today! I do get to start my exciting elliptical work next week as a precursor to reintroducing runs over the next few weeks. Hopefully by the end of January I will at least be able to be swimming, biking and running in some capacity. Have a great weekend everyone! Chris |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hooey, Rene! I'm tired just reading your workout of the day. The trail run turned into a hike. My running ladies and I helped sweep, which is pretty much hiking, after the runners for trail signs. The race director is the husband of one of them. Ended up looking for lost runners! They were 10 minutes late for the race and decided to head into the jungle anyway. Aiyaiyai! Luckily a mutual friend of ours walked back in looking for them and let us know they hadn't exited the jungle yet. They eventually found their way out. We had people who know the area looking for them, so we would eventually have found them, but they didn't have any hydration, which would have stank if it took a while. It all ended well and it was a lovely hike. Here's a picture of the post hike/rescue double rainbow in photo 1. Photo 2 is of one of the streams on the course, and photo 3 is of the falls the trail run is named for. Pic 2 and 3 were from last year. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Howdy, all. Our weather here in Baltimore has been all over the place....snow, really cold, warmer, then rainy, then repeat. I'm not complaining though...at least it's not -30 here. Salvaged my week over the weekend with a couple of runs and a trainer ride, and got all my strength work in despite my chest cold, which thankfully was on the mild side and seems to be clearing up a couple of days after starting ABs. This week is supposed to be a recovery week but since I'm behind with getting sick and the holidays, I'm not really recovering from anything so I'll keep it as another normal week in Prep phase. Next week is going to be tough with a full work week! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Blanda- beautiful pics! Mike- glad to hear that you're starting to feel better. Don't try to do too much too soon. Chest colds have a way of turning into other nasty things if you aren't careful. When is your race? My run mileage is finally starting to get back to normal. Fargo Man Arrested For Clearing Snow With FlamethrowerFargo, ND – Local resident Todd Fox has been detained for “reckless endangerment” and “illegal use of high-powered fire-breathing weaponry” for attacking snow with his flamethrower. Fox reportedly became so fed up with the week-long blowing snow epidemic in his area that he decided to KILL IT WITH FIRE. The neighborhood was treated with quite a show last night as Fox unleashed an inferno upon the mountainous snow palace that was his front yard. Neighbors to his immediate right and left noticed a bright orange cloud and could hear what they thought was “puff the magic dragon spewing mayhem all over hell,” which prompted one of them to notify police. Fox stated that he was simply “fed up with battling the elements” and that he did not possess the willpower necessary to move “four billion tons of white bull shi%t .” Police say that Fox surrendered his efforts immediately upon their arrival and that his front yard “looked like a hydrogen bomb had gone off.” They think he was just happy to be done with snow removal, even if it did mean a trip to jail.

Everybody and their sister was at the grocery store today buying up all the bread and milk just in case we're covered in snow for the next 30 days and 30 nights.
