Expert 1580 Ankeny, Iowa | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Hey everyone - 2.75 miles in the book for me tonight. Wha hoo... Congrats to everyone who got out there today, and congrats to those who have an off day today - I had one yesterday and enjoyed it. Hubby and I ran again tonight. We had a GREAT run tonight. Seems we did alright with almost 3 miles straight at an 11 min mile pace - just if all runs could be this way. We took the last .10 and "turned it up a notch" - I said not much - I kept up with hubby and we hit 6:14min/mile for that .10 - thank goodness it was only .10 miles Updated spreadsheet is attached. We are well on our way - we are at 36.60% so far. I think we can hit 50% by the end of this week. Leaders so far - D001 with 49.70%, klgray with 48.77%, Baowolf with 48.20% and lyssa-gator with 47%... (As if we needed something else to talk smack about)

Veteran 131 Tampa, Florida | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Just wanted to say a quick thanks to everyone who posted advice or comments about my knees, the shoes...... I think I'm just not used to pushing myself and it's soreness. I did actually fork out the dough and spent some quality time with the New Balance staff at their store to get the right shoes, and I'm fairly certain we came out with the right pair.... I feel fine today, it was a rest day for me and I was considering taking tomorrow off, but since I'm not hurting at all, think I'll give it a moderate distance for tomorrow, just so I don't get lazy. Anybody else notice that taking more than one day off causes you to slack the 3rd and so on? And then once you force yourself out there you feel great again and can't remember why sat on the couch and watched endless reruns of Law and Order??? Congrats to all you that are racking up the miles. I think that I'm on target to meet my goal, but probably won't exceed it and that's okay. 2 months ago my total for the month was zero. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Oh look 5.7 miles tonight... brings me to just under 60% for the month... Too bad I shift to day off, bike day and then a brick with a short/long feeling run after (brick on Saturday). That will give our rabbits a chance to catch me before next week. Yall have a big shot as I am pushing the edge of what I should do for my endurance level and can't really sneak in any more miles than I have been while working on the bike too. I still have no juice after a 22-24 mile bike ride, first mile and a half is fine then at 2 miles ... not much left and have to walk the last 1.1 miles. As for weight, my resting motabolism is so low that I can eat practically nothing and not lose weight. On the advice of a personal trainer years ago I did try a higher callorie count by about 500 and it just stalemated my weightloss. I'll be raising the callorie count in another 7-10 weeks anyway to level out the weight where I want it. I still have some pants that don't fit and that Tri outfit is eh not so flattering atm. I appreciate the advice it is consistent with what I have heard, my system just runs verrrry low and not much works to reduce the weight. And I am not actually made of spun glass, all is well, the bear went into his cave processed things and all is fine now. And for guys at least it is well worth getting an anatomically correct seat. I would think that would be true for girls too, but I wouldn't know. I know that my bike seat keeps my nether reagions from going numb on rides over 1 hour without having to stand up on the pedles. Master 2339 somewhere over the rainbow | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread glad you're better beowolf. as for anitomically correct seats, i saw one (for women) in a magazine, and had to read the caption just to see what it was!! i thought it was *something else* (grins) i was relieved actually to see that it WAS a bike seat, and not what i thought it was at first. seems like it would be worth trying out anyway. that was honestly the only thing that was sore after my race. my legs were fine, my arms, shoulders, everything, but my, um, sitting area was not so fine, and it took quite a while (a week at least) to get back to normal. when i get to get a new bike (hopefully in the spring?) i'll check it out. my bike is garbage though, i'm sure i've mentioned. maybe when i get a new one, i'll have the pleasure of lighting my old one on fire, and throwing it over a cliff or something. that'd be good. planning on a relatively long run in the morning, but as usual it depends on my husbands work. if they call him in, i'm stuck. again. (the money is nice, but i'm kind of hoping for him to not get called) g'night apples, sleep and recover, tomorrow we RUN!! |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Yes I have seen the anotomically correct female seats, is why I brought it up. For my bike they credited me $60 for the generic seat and discounted the new seat 25% so it only ended up costing me $45. If I had changed my mind and gone back the next day it would have been $140 and I would have a spare junk seat. Anyway my 2 coppers, I would at least ask to try one on a trainer in the store for a few min and see how it feals. Granted my unbroken in seat doesnt feal "cushy" to sit on, but it does work as intended. Man no workout tomorrow... gona have no idea what to do with myself with a whole hour to 90 min of free time, guess I will read Tri Bible or something. Edited by Baowolf 2007-10-10 11:25 PM |

First off, cool bike porn! Personally, I set a goal that would push me, but that I thought I could achieve - provided I don't slack off. (And no, that's not going to happen!) I'm with you. Two months ago, my run total was zero. I joined BT in August. I started biking first. Then added swimming. Last month, I did a whopping 2.2 miles walk/jogging. Woohoo! LOL Last month, I think I was a little too ambitious with my swim/bike goals for the challenge. I made both goals, though. In fact, I went over 100% with them. But I'm paying the price this month. My shoulder, which I've NEVER had a problem with, has been bothering me. I'm hoping it's not the rotator cuff. I do not want to take a chance with my knee. It's had problems before. So I'm being really careful not to overdo it. I DO plan on sticking to my training plan and meeting my goal. And if things go well, and it looks like I'll hit my goal early, I'll just ask to raise the goal number. That way, I'll just have a new goal to aim for. I wonder what next month's challenge will be. I bet you're hoping it's a biking one! Dee |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread I just doubled my last months running and biking goals, figured it would be challenging enough. I anticipate beating the goals on the run, not sure about my bike goals, although the new bike will help. Problem is it is getting darker much sooner and snow is about 1-2 months early this year. I am mostly following my duathlon plan as I have no swimming available (not whining, just stating a fact). Next week the plan steps up quite a bit, I may have to repeat this week's levels or walk some of the 60 min run following the bike ride (ouche). Oh shoot that is this week, I'm soo toast. Good news is that's a lot more running miles than I was planning on for the week.... not so much time for you to catch up (evil grin). [No I am not making it up I just hadn't looked at the plan past tomorrow. Oh well, clearly time for me to get some rest. |

Actually, I'd totally go for that because I'm determined to focus on swimming in the off season (after my tri next month). But I probably wouldn't sign up for one until December. Probably. Uh, looks like I've just been "volunteered"!!!! Someone told me there is usually a December Swim Challenge. If there is, then would another one in November generate much interest? As for you doing another challenge next month, well, you're doing an AWESOME job with this one. And it's HUGE! There are SO many people/teams to track. (And TANers to keep in line.) So yes, I can see why you'd prefer not to do another one next month. (What? You need to have time for the rest of your life?) Dee |

I got one a couple of years back and it made a huge difference on the century ride that I did (and of course on all the training). No more numbness or pain you know where. My hubby got one for men and he too felt it was well worth the money spent. If you are waiting a while before getting the new bike, you may think about getting the seat now. It might change how you feel on the old (garbage) bike. Just a thought. |

(june 2nd of this year) my big problem with distance-i get BORED! i can't always think of something engaging to think about you know? my mind wanders, and that's fine. but sometimes i get mentally bored. that sound uber-cheez i know, but what do YOU guys think about when you're running or biking, or swimming for that matter (usually i'm so focused on form that i don't wander when i swim) |

I know, sounds crazy, but I count steps, strokes (swimming), breathes, etc. It does drive me crazy after a while though, so then I start to think about work (oh no, I'm out here to get away from work, but there it is) and I often come up with some awesome problem solving ideas, but then can I remember them when I do get back to work. Usually not. Oh, well, I guess they weren't such great ideas after all. Hey, where's my music. I understand the whole leave the music at home so that you know what is going on around you, but boy does working out to music make my day goa whole lot better. |

Expert 973 Berkeley, Calif. | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread KNS! That's FANTASTIC! Oh wow, I'm so happy for you. And yeah, the others are right, that first mile is absolutely the hardest. I was stunned at how quickly I moved from running a mile to running two or three or four (and hopefully five next week, heh). That 5k is just around the corner. Re: counting while you run. Ha! I do the same thing, although I tend to also do simple math. I have no idea why that is, because it's not something I consciously plan. My mind wanders while I run and all of a sudden I realize I'm doing calculations in my head. For some reason my body just equates running with numbers. Very weird. I'm glad I'm not alone. |

For some reason my body just equates running with numbers. Very weird. I'm glad I'm not alone. I do the same. And that's where I get into trouble on the swim. It's ok to "think math" while running or biking, because I'm going in a straight line. I've either reached the end of the street, or I haven't. But on the swim (in the pool), I'll be calculating numbers in my head. And then I'll think, "Am I on lap 11 or 13? I know it's got to be an odd number, but which one?" So I apply the "penalty rule" - which says I have to take the lower number (11). I've learned to focus on NOT doing math while swimming. But every now and then (like yesterday), I do it, and end up losing count. |

I think with the swimming I'm still so so so focused on getting the technique down that I don't have the counting/math problem there. I'm constantly thinking about my rotation, the length of my strokes, keeping my head down and my hips up, whatever. There's always something I need to fix! Plus, I tend to swim in batches, so I'll do 50 yards of one drill, then 50 of another, then back to the first, etc., and it's kind of hard to lose track of two laps, heh. Even if I swim a long distance, I'll break it up into 100s to time myself, so at the very least I know how far I've gone based on what my watch says. If my "100" only took 1:30, I know I've screwed up and need to swim another couple laps. That said, I'm very familiar with the penalty rule. When I do occasionally lose track, I do the same thing and make myself go with the lower number. So cruel! |
