Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() lisazapato - 2008-04-09 10:48 AM lisazapato - 2008-04-08 11:14 PM sunday was my race, which totally kicked my azz, and now i'm just tired in general. i did some swimming yesterday and a really short jog today, but i'm wondering - how should you recover after a hard effort? i don't want to push it too hard so i can hit it hard next week. i felt weak and tired all today. i can't decide whether to rest tomorrow or do a bike and swim. what do you guys do? historically, i completely stop running for like months, but i dn't want to do that this time, i want to keep building, but i don't know when to start pushing again. thanks! Actually, i feel MUCH better today! So I did got for my bike/swim and now I feel even better! So, I guess a few days of lightness is all you need. But I still wonder, for you experienced racers, what do you normally do? It really depends on the effort, what you're base is and what you're training for. For example, I'm training for a HIM in mid-June, if I had a sprint-tri this week I might limit my effort (instead of going all out) and prehaps even do another (easy) workout later in the day. I also have 3-months of base work completed. Altering my schedule slightly to fit races into my training plan works well. Another example is a 1/2mary that coinsides with a long run. I'll do the 1/2mary, but only push the effort as hard as the training plan calls for. Finally, it's probably a good idea to take at least 1 day of rest for every hour of "A" effort you put into a race. So, if I complete my HIM (my A race) in 5.5hrs, I will probably do nothing for 2day and some active rest for another 3-4 days before easing back into a training schedule for the next "A" race. |

The first half marathon I did, I started running about a week and a half after the race, and it was too soon. I spent 2-3 weeks hobbling around after that run. But my marathon, I was doing pool and biking on the Tuesday after the run, and light running the following weekend, and it worked for me. So.. go with what your body says that you can do. The most important thing is to give your body time to recover before starting again.sunday was my race, which totally kicked my azz, and now i'm just tired in general. i did some swimming yesterday and a really short jog today, but i'm wondering - how should you recover after a hard effort? i don't want to push it too hard so i can hit it hard next week. i felt weak and tired all today. i can't decide whether to rest tomorrow or do a bike and swim. what do you guys do? historically, i completely stop running for like months, but i dn't want to do that this time, i want to keep building, but i don't know when to start pushing again. thanks! x 2, light running is the best option post race but not until you feel ready for it. Some recomend 1 day off from hard running for every mile of the race. I think that can be a bit much but swimming and biking are great options! |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh stupid me, congrats on your race Lisa. Way to push through. Good plan on not taking months off after this race. You took the time to get your fitness up to this level now why would you want to throw it all away by not running for a while? This is going to be your best year ever so keep up the good work and the rewards will keep coming! |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My next race will be next weekend a 10 miler that I will be pushing my son in his running stroller. It will be more of a good workout as the course is really hilly and I am going back into base training so I won't be racing hard. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend! |

We have done about 15 races together and always start in the back and see how many we can catch by the end. The problem is usually the first half mile to mile just trying to move our way up through the pack. Last year at this race we caught 200 of the 275 in the race and loved the expressions on peoples faces as we passed them going up a hill and my son screeching and saying "GO GO" I think one of the few words he knew back then. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm back from Florida had a great time, sunny and 85 everyday, boy I could winter out here. We came back a day early, my son started blowing chunks on Thurs. he's fine now. The food was great I ate way too much but, that's what vactions are for. I also had 2 Bud Lights man they tasted great that leaves me only 22 for the rest of the year. I had a little set back on Monday at mile 5 of a 6 miler my right calf cramped up real bad I had to walk home. It hurt all day, my guess it was a cramp. Do cramps take several days to get over, I took off Tuesday and ran 6.5 on Wednesday and it was still sore. I'm a little nervous about this I didn't run the rest of the week (my taper started Mon. according to schedule). I skipped my 12 mile long run Friday I plan to make it up Mon. Any advice my mary is in two weeks. |

Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation If it feels better than first test it with a short run at an easy pace to make sure the pain is gone. Keep us updated! |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Stay calm, no sense using energy overthinking or worrying. Like the old saying goes..."It's not a sprint it is a marathon" Take it nice and easy at first and the first few miles should feel really easy. If not slow down a bit, get your breath right and just churn out the miles. What always works good for me is to come up with a game in my head to keep me from thinking about how many miles are left. Let your mind go, keep on pace but enjoy your surroundings and just soak it in. Get to 20 miles and then the marathon begins. Stay strong and keep on moving! You'll do great. |

March was a really bad month for me with the pulling out of CDA before switching to Arizona. It kept snowing and stayed really cold and my attitude was crap. But it is finally getting Springy up here and things are on the up and up! |
