DDVMM - 2012-09-28 7:51 AM Jen, I log at my fitness pal and I think Scott does too.

I've used mydailyplate in the past.  Is fitness pal better?

I like the phone app for MFP so it works for me.  I've used all of them and use this because of the mobile app.

So if they told you 1750 than like Karen said subtract 500 for a pound a week and make sure to eat back a good portion of your exercise cals for recovery purposes.  Make sure you eat enough because it will stall your losses too as well as hindering your recovery.

All this talk about food is making me HUNGRY!!

I was 177 at the beginning of the week and I am 171 now. All I did was stop eating after 800 no more cookies and milk every night and I forgot I ran 41 miles already this week.  Thats my formula

don't be a HATER!!

When you IM train the weight will come off Fitgeralds rule is to stay within 8% of your race weight. That scares me because that puts me in the 190's. After IM I put on 6 pounds and this month I am working to take them off.

500 less calories a day X 7 days = 3500 calories, or 1 pound/week.  The tricky part is determining what you really need.  If your BMR is 1750, then it would be 1250 if you did not exercise at all.  But you exercise.

The guy I went to basically said to fuel your workouts, so take in the calories you need for working out while you are working out.  Don't store them - which is what I would do.

And be cautious of how many calories you are burning while working out.  Gym equipment and online calculators over estimate most of the time, buy a lot.  I loosely use the calories that show I burned on my Garmin which uses my HR in the calculation.  I still think that's not very accurate though.

Rules of thumb don't work very well.

Every person is an individual and has different individual requirements.

Jen -- if this is an issue for you (which it shouldn't be).  You need to work with a sports nutrionist who has experience with endurance athletes (which is not always an easy thing to find).

For some people it will (based on what I know about Scott, he won't have an issue).  For other people it doesn't.  Not everyone is built the same.

I have to agree with Kelly, it's not just calories in / calories out. That would be too easy. Everyone has different results. And what may work in your 20's or 30's, probably won't in your 40's. :/

It's amazing how much endurance and fitness can be lost in 3 weeks.  LOL  My pace is a lot slower for Z1 right now (vs. 3 weeks ago).  I huffed and puffed a little on my run yesterday.  I know it will come back quickly though, and I remind myself of that while I'm riding and running.

Off to the apple farm.....loading up on apples, my favorite fruit!

DDVMM - 2012-09-27 8:52 AM Kelly - how are you feeling? How is training going? Excited for the Poconos??

Pretty crappy.

Sick last week.  My fiscal year ends on September 30th so work is crazy.  Shaun is generally a mess and ignored several letters from the IRS (dealing with tax issues before we were married) so all of our bank accounts were levied and garnished this morning.  Not a great week.

Ton of stress.

Sorry to hear that, Kelly. Hang in there

Finally able to do SOME exercising by way of walking. My PT released me to walk a little each day, so I did about a mile Thursday and 1.3 today. Back is slowly coming around but I really did a number on it. I guess my year is a total loss with the injuries I've had Due to not being able to consistently work out I've put some pounds back on too.

I haven't run or been on the bike since my HIM three weeks ago tomorrrow. I start back on the trainer tomorrow morning and then running on Monday. I had such dead legs I don't know if I'll be slower or not but I'll find out fast.

Kelly put up a 34:00 swim.  First bike split was at 13.7 miles, and it looks like she's going fast!!!  Go, Kelly!

I've done a TRI in these conditions and froze on the bike. It sucks not to get to do the race you trained for but not freezing or having the stress of potentially crashing in these conditions isn't the worst thing.

Did an hour on the trainer this morning. Half hour warm up, 15 minutes of short intervals and 15 minute cool down. I felt strong on the intervals which was nice.

Go Kelly!

How was your race Scott?

It was okay I guess.  Coldish, wet, and no bike.  I really just couldn't get up for it.  Ended up coming out of the water at 30 minutes and ran 7:30 miles so not horrible.  The swim measured long too so fairly happy.  I could have kept the run pace for a lot longer.

Always knew I liked the bike leg a lot, but I'm looking at my rig all cleaned up and ready to race sitting in the hallway and it makes me sad.  Cry

Congratulations, Scott!  I'm sorry your bike was canceled, but I'm glad you made the best of it and pushed yourself on the swim and the run.

Congratulations, Kelly!  Can't wait to hear about the race (course, weather, thoughts, etc.).  IMFL is right around the corner

One of the many funny things to happen today:  I was standing at our team's tent waiting to head to the swim start and my cell rings.  It's Cindy freaking out because my bike is still in the front hallway.  She was like "You couldn't be dumb enough to forget your bike, right?"

Brutally tough course.  Up and down all day on the bike and the run was the hilliest half I've ever done.

It was cold.  In the 40s when I got out of the water so I have the longest T1 ever drying off and putting on layers.  Bike was super fast for the first 20 miles then about 3500 feet of climbing over the last 36.  Nothing huge but cnostantly up and down and the downs hills very curvy.

Run was tough.  Hilly hilly hilly (hillier than Rev 3 Quassy run).  Run was solid for me but the I had a little bit of a wait at the port-a-potty (there was only 1 on the course).

Over nice but tough course.  Organization was a whole different story.
