For what its worth regarding the detour, I was up there this weekend for a camp and the race director ate dinner with us Saturday and asked us if we "liked the new course?" He said he personally made the change and overall road quality played into it. Plus Roch Frey who ran the camp is on the Ironman planning board and he said the change was definite.

I know that is why I was so confused when 'they' spoke about it so matter of fact. Hmmmm, now I am not sure what the difference is. Its a change in the out and back but I don't know the name of the new road. I was just sort of following the group and didn't take note to the name of the road.

Ok, this you'd remember.  When you went on the detour, did you go up left up the ill from rt 9N BEFORE the detour or after? Did you then Turn right at the stop sign?  There aren't many stop signs, so you may remember.

Speaking of sweating the details: Hopefully the Ironman Perform they give out in LP will have a squeeze top....as opposed to the screw off on the bottles we received.....

Serious question. Is there ANYONE who we can ask these questions to? Does anyone here have a contact? Maybe as a whole, the BT community can get someone from BT to ask them for us, we have a large membership and they might respond to a group.

Good questions and concerns.

No chance they hand out drink bottles with screw on tops....if they did, I would be SHOCKED....its a huge safety issue, and I would think that issue was very high on the RDs list.....

Where the bike course goes for the out and back means zero to our training, and zero to the race.

We are all riding the same course.....looking at the map, there are like 2 options for a different out and back.....look at them both.....

We're getting close!!  Let's not stress over things we cannot control!!

Wow, a rational thought.. are you allowed those in here? Tongue out I worry about the little stuff when I am less worried about the big stuff.  My wife has threatened to move out during my tape.

well, I think it was a right hand turn that went down a hill into some little town because I remember a green welcome flag on the light posts. The road forked off and we just turned around at that point. I emailed the camp director to get the road name. this turn was before the original out and back because that was pointed out to us as we passed it.

Anyway, its no big deal anyway. It will be what it will be. I do remember it was downhill on our and uphill on the back but it wasn't anything significant.

Really:

The two loop bike course takes place on impeccably smooth roads.  There is a major 9km downhill (good for the average speed).  The rest of the bike is a mix of some rolling hills and some "small chainring climbs.  Overall, you can move on this course!

Taken from the bike course description on IMLP website.

Funny thing is that other than reading what you guys have said about the course, I haven't as much as looked at an elevation map let alone a course map.  Perhaps I should do that before I go up there next week to ride, run and swim the course for a week...

Perhaps...

I'm pretty sure you went to Ausable forks.  After you came down the big hill, you would have ridden about 10 miles and then instead of going up the hill, kept going straight.  In the end you would come to the town - 6 or so miles farther, then come back, taken a right UP the hill and then kept going until the sign, then a left until the bears, etc.

Anyway, we can't control it, I just like to sweat the stupid stuff. Takes my mind off the rest of the 140.6

The only thing I'm stressing about is where to eat my post-race meal given my favorite restaurant will be closed!!!

Question for the veterans - where are the good spectator spots? My BF has graciously agreed to come and sit out there allllllll day for me so I want him to really enjoy the race. He's an athlete as well and I think he's going to love the Ironman experience. So please share your thoughts on the best place to see the swim, bike and run and whatever else you've learned from experience!

Tell him to try to volunteer.. You can't have a better view of places.  Last year, we volunteered and were all over the place, - plus free food -  When we were walking around, we just kind of milled about at the swim and tried to find a good spot, then on the bike, there wasn't really much except along the road.  For the run, a lot of people were on the out and back by the lake so that you would see your person 4X on the run, but we were at the finish doing timing.

Chapter 1, The Art of War:

Laying Plans/The Calculations explores the five fundamental factors (the Way, seasons, terrain, leadership, and management) and seven elements that define a successful outcome. By thinking, assessing and comparing these points you can calculate a victory, deviation from them will ensure failure. Remember that war is a very grave matter of state.

Lets not confuse stressing over course changes and squeezy tops, with knowing the terrain before you enter the battle field.  You must, especially for an IM course.  To me, it is the crux of how to attack it, how to distribute your effort, and ignoring it with all the tools at your disposal on the net is borderline foolishness.  Realize that those you will compete against for the few coveted golden tickets to the promise land that is Kona, are keenly aware of the terrain, and both out and back options....the difference is they don't stress over it....they use it to their advantage.

Thank You Gordon Gekko!   I'm going to just enjoy the day.  July 25th, for me, is about fun. -- a celebration of my Love for this great sport called Triathlon.  It's about accomplishment, rebirth, a new beginning, and Living Life to it's fullest, and sharing it all with my parents, wife and children.  I hope to enjoy it with my fellow triathletes.  The thought of War will be the furthest thing from my mind on that day.  Just sayin'

I don't know if anyone remembers but a while back I posted a comment about post race stomach cramps and several of your offered some suggestions. Well, I just wanted to say thank you. I raced this weekend at Mooseman 70.3 and tried out some of your suggestions like actually doing a cool down and then eating something shortly after and it worked! After I crossed the finish line I was greeted by my friends and then I started talking and all of a sudden I could feel the cramps coming, so I told everyone I would be back and then walked off and did a cool down and the cramps went away immediately. It was awesome being able to enjoy my PR and second 70.3 and not be pain! Thanks for the advice.  Oh and after the pictures I enjoyed one huge cheese burger!
