DETAILS DETAILS DETAILS i KNOW. However, I am not packing a pump for this deal.  How crazy will it be that morning trying to pump tires.  buying a pump is not that big of a deal to relieve stress once I am there.  Curious the thoughts of you IM veterans

Tracker09 - 2011-06-19 12:23 PM I'm looking for some suggestions.  I did an OWS in a cold Long Island Sound last Sunday and picked up a sinus infection.  My last workout was a 14 mile run on Monday.  I have been way too sick to do any more workouts since then so I've had to take 5 days off.  I've been on meds and am starting to get better.  I think I'll be 90% on Monday or Tuesday but don't know what I should do for workouts so close to the race.  Has anyone been in this situation before?  I don't think I should go the distances I had originally planed for this weekend.

I'm no expert, but I am staying at a Holiday Inn Express in Coeur D'Alene.  I would focus on getting better first and slowly easing back in before the race.  It's too late to do anything to create fitness at this point, but keeping the legs moving does help.  I would not do more than 6-7 hours next week.

I wouldn't even worry about it. Just focus on getting to 100% and then just do some really short stuff when you get to CdA to get loosened up. If you've trained according to plan, a full week off when you should be tapering anyways is probably better for you anyways.

Not having a pump is not a problem.  There will be at least one in your area that everyone is passing around.  I pump my tires up with a pump at Tri Bike Transport when I pick my bike up so teh tires are good for pre race rides and then borrow one in transition the morning of the race.

Well, I'm an IM rookie, but I've done many marathons and have been in the situation of being sick the week or two before a race.  Whether or not you've done proper training up to the two weeks before an endurance event, the last two weeks of training are more about keeping yourself loose than adding any fitness.  Some of my best races have been when I've done almost nothing in the last two weeks.  Since you're coming off being sick, not only is it ok for you to do less than you originally planned, it's the best thing for you.  Do just enough to loosen up if you're stiff from being sick, do some good stretching and rest.  Your fitness is still there.  Don't try to cram in anything hard just to verify you're still fit - that will hurt you more than help you.

Just my two cents.

Brad

There have been some occasional references on here about things people put in their special needs bags.  Now that I'm starting to actually pack stuff, it has me wondering what you vets have found to be useful and what you have found to be useless in special needs.  In particular, what are some of the unusual things you've added that most of us newbies wouldn't think of?

Thanks,
Brad

I think the special needs bags can include just about anything. I have put different foods/drinks that I might feel like at that point. I had a friend that put a twinkie in there and it worked for him. I often put motivational notes in there (my wife has put them in as well - something for me to look forward to). For me it is more of a motivational, personal special needs bag.

That being said, I have also had races where I never accessed these bags. I certainly wouldn't over think it . Good luck!

I'll also add: no swimming until you get healthy and get your head cleared.  You don't want to be hopping on a flight with a lingering sinus infection.  It can be a very miserable / painful experience.

Take it easy, stay indoors - do some light stretching and get lots of rest until you're better.  It's frustrating but that'll put you in the best shape for the race.

As someone who's also found themselves sick I agree with everyone here. Focus on fluids, rest and light easy workouts to stay loose. I've been sick since Wednesday afternoon and my workouts have consisted of:

TH - 45 min easy run and 30 min OWS (didn't feel super sick yet)
FRI - Rest Day
SAT - Rest Day (HB video creation day)
SUN - Just did 1:15 on the trainer and a 15 min easy run

I'm still stuffed up and have crap in my head/throat but the doctor put me on a heavy cocktail to clear everything up before the big day (Sudafed, Flonase, Benadryl and Ibuprofen).

Hang in there!

Also on the SN bags I put in 2 groups of things (stuff just in case like C02, tubes, extra socks etc) and then stuff I know I'll want (Cheetos, Peeps, Mike & Ike's, more of my drink cocktail, Body Glide etc)

I plan to carry on my transition bag with my super important stuff.

Other than fluids greater than 3 oz, is there anything I can't carry on a plane?  Helmet is ok right?

Co2 can't even be in your checked bags.

1) Flying with CO2: CO2 cartridges are banned from all aircraft because they are listed as hazardous materials by the Federal government Department of transportation and FAA. The reason for this is that the containers are un-regulated and can and do have the ability to fail with out warning. The department of transportation does not allow these to be transported in any way by air, which means they cannot be shipped via FedEx, UPS or any air service.

Other than CO2 and liquids over  3oz Im going ot say everything else is ok.

I seem to recall it's also a hefty fine if you get caught.

If one were to want to ride part of the course what part would you ride?  I'm assuming the part up in Hayden to get a feel for the hills, but any part in particular?

Best bang for your buck would be the Northern section of the course from Lakeview Dr/Honeysuckle intersection, up through Hayden Lake Rd/Dodd Rd/Rimrock Rd/Ohio Match Rd and back out.  That'll get you mentally prepped for the hills, turns and general level of effort that's gonna be required (x2) on race day, based on your bike fitness and bike/run goals.  Also, as has been stated before - Coeur D'Alene will EAT you alive if you go out on loop 1 of the bike and burn all your matches.  Play conservative on the first loop and let it rip a little harder on loop 2 if you feel up to it.  It also helps to remember on race day that despite how challenging miles 20-40 are, you'll be (relatively) sailing for the 16 miles back into downtown (unless there is an uncharacteristically brutal headwind) - keep that in mind when your quads feel like sausages that are about to split out of their casings as you grind your way back up out of the turnaround on Ohio Match for what seems like forever...  Good luck everyone!

Amen!  And as anyone that has done CdA before knows, that run down Sherman is epically awesome, from the minute you make that last left-hander, all the way down.  Soak it in...it's one of the things that makes CdA such an awesome race.

See y'all on the other side.  I hit the road Tuesday morning - should be pulling into CdA on Wednesday around noon.....
