Since I have been abused lately I have bought stock in Kleenex.

Are you sure that's wise with all this global warming and stuff? The paper market is going to be plummeting here in a few yrs.

Josh:  As far as I know testing is the only way to "measure" RMR or BMR.  If you are eating 5-6 meals a day: are they 400-600 calories each?  Do they include some fat AND protein?  From what I have read your BMR will not change much except with age (slows down).  I would imagine that if you are eating 3000 cals a day and are still hungry then those meals are out of balance.

Um quick question to anyone out there....this week I included some speed training in my running. It went very well and I felt great afterwards (in fact my "regular" speed felt very slow after I finished my tempo run). Anyhoo..the after my tempo run..I became slightly nauseous during the day. My stomach just did not feel right, nothing drastic..just slight nauseau througout the day..to the point where I skipped my swimming workout because I couldnt imagine being nauseaous through an hour of swimming. Has this happened to anyone else?

What was your nutrition plan for that day?  Before, during, after.  List out everything, that could give us an indication as to why you felt sick.

Ok, let me see if I can remember, my journal is at home...

Breakfast: English Muffin (with a bit of butter and Jam), one egg, tea (I cant each much more that early in the morning)
Snack (about 30 - 45 mins before working out): Pria Nutrition Bar
Lunch: Grilled shrimp and grilled chicken salad with a banana for dessert
Snack: Yogurt
Dinner: Grilled Chicken, Brown Rice, Steamed Brocolli w/home made onion and tomatoe salsa
Dessert: Two small chocolate chip cookies
Lots of water throughout the day

None of the above was out of the ordinary. The salad I bought, the dinner I made.

The next day, I had my breakfast and went to work...as I had my "checking my emails" cup of tea...the nausea appeared and stayed with me the rest of the day...so I skipped my swim that evening.

I don't think your workout and nausea are related.  If you were under-nourished for your workout, you would have felt sick during or immediately after the run.  When did it go away?

You say you bought the salad???? Expired shrimp anyone? Maybe it was the chicken, I don't know but it sounds like nothing more than an upset stomach or a disagreement between what you ate and your stomach.

Your probably right about the meals being out of whack!, Though they are balanced with fat and protein, and carbs. I don't think I'm eating 3000 cal a day or more. actually I was around 2700 with an 300-800 cal deficit. ( or at least i think). I just wondered if there were tell tale signs of an increased metabolism with which the avg Joe could recognize vs. spending the money to go have some tests done, that's all.

Maybe it was a mini panic attack.. Some people, myself included, have anxiety from time to time and it is otherwise unexplained and the attacks don't manifest as they might in traditional patients. subtle signs. Maybe for some reason your blood sugar was low, or it may have even been a case of acid reflux. The point is if it happens regularly, maybe you should think about having it checked out. Otherwise, workout exhaustion that displays in other ways is somewhat common.

This used to happen to me quite regularly, and what I found is that I needed to be more careful about replenishing my electrolytes.  The more I workout, the more I sweat, the more I need a good solid balance of electrolytes at the end.  It may ALSO be the fact that you might have been either overhydrated or underhydrated during/after your workout.

I think you threw something out of whack because of your intensity levels, and I don't think it has much to do with your diet, except that sometimes things that work well on a regular basis do NOT work so well when you add intensity.  For example, I cannot eat oatmeal before any intense workout, it'll make me sick during and after the workout.  It's like my body cannot handle the digestion that oatmeal needs plus intensity.  I'm fine with Clifbars though before working out intensely.

It's kind of an experiment to find what will work well for you body and digestive needs.

Cadreamer..you may be on to something here. Electrolytes aye! Whats the best way to replace them...Gatorade and such? or is there something else? Arent sports drink high in sugar?

So guess my next question is..what is everyone's favorite sports drink?

On short runs (Less than 2 hours) I use HEED.  For longer distances, I use HEED and Edurolytes (pill form).  I also drink Recoverite after any intense workout to help repair and build muscle.  Helps keep the soreness down, too.  All of these products are from Hammer Nutrition.

I do not like Gatorade, and I don't think it's that balanced as far as energy replacement etc.  Frankly, too much sugar, and if I'm working out and drinking it, it gives me stomach cramps after about an hour.

I REALLY like the way Crank Sports stuff works for me (extra electrolytes included) both the gel and the sports drink, and they are not as sweet as most of the product out there.

I do not like clifshots at all, they make me feel sick, but their clifshot blocks (the little gummy things) are a gift.  I can eat them and not get ill.

I also use Endurolytes - I think they are awesome.

I've been toying with getting into Infinit and trying salt tabs, but haven't tried those products yet.

Go to a good running/biking store and talk to the guys there about what they have.  Sports nutrition/energy/electrolyte replacement is a very personal thing.  Anything that one person likes another person will loathe with a passion.  You could start with the Endurolytes though, they are just something you swallow - so not a lot of extra ingredients.

Personally, I like gatoraid. It does have a lot of sugar in it, though it soothes my stomach well... One thing I didn't see mentioned yet are the electrolytic drinks designed for children when they have diarrhea/vomitting or something. I forget what its called but it should be sold in the same isle as most baby food products, it comes in different flavors, and could possibly be what you're looking for in terms of settling an upset stomach/replacing electrolytes/ the whole problem that Cadreamer is on. I think that Gerber makes it, but the idea is to generally replace electrolytes and help stop dehydration.
