No races for me for a while - although a July run, hmmm....

Timmeh, nice aerobars and glad everyone is okay.  Showers every second day - that's hard to get used to.

Caius - nice job on the 1/2.  Can't wait to see how you do in July!

Gloria, glad you're having nice weather.  We are too, finally!

Have a great week, everyone.

squishybelly - 2008-06-17 8:53 AM Caius - great job on the 1/2 on Sunday. Given your training load the day before and stomach issues during the week, I'd say that was a really impressive run. At this point do you figure you're ready to enjoy / suffer through IMLP?

Thanks. Yeah, I can't believe just how much of an impact my stomach issues actually had. Not only during the race itself when I was getting massive cramps due to the jostling but also on the day before during the bike ride. I just had absolutely no power in my legs right from the get go. I think it's because everything went right through me for a week and so my body's energy stores were low. This highlighted the importance of proper nutritional fueling; especially in the weeks leading up to IMLP.

As for IMLP, well I know that I can do the swim course (allthough I will be slow) and I know I can finish the bike course. The question is will I be able to run the marathon? Right now, I can see me running 10K, maybe right up to the half. The remainder? I will be counting on the energy of the event and the cheering people to carry me through There is no doubt in my mind that there will be some suffering. Bring it!

I have a 5K race on Saturday, and it isn't supposed to snow !! Lol well we have our fingers crossed on that on anyway.

I am meeting another local BT person at the "lake" that my tir was , yes folks it has water in it now . half full at least we are going to get some open water practice in. It will be my first attempt, any tips on how to stay calm are welcome, I need 'em!

Cauis, great job on the race this last weekend !

Keep smiling the work week is almost half over

Gloria - OWS, I just found the easiest way to manage it was to take my time. It does take a little getting used to as you have no lines to follow and there is no wall to hang on to, but so far I've just stayed close to shore, focused on my breathing, and things have gone reasonably well.

Good luck this weekend on the 5K.

In the pool I practice swimming with my eyes closed, and then sighting.  Sometimes I get a little disoriented, but the practice helps.  Don't breathe with your head up when sighting, breath on your side like you normally do - you're liable to get a face (mouth) full of water in an OWS situation.

Good swim this morning.  There were 4 or 5 lanes and each one had two people in them.  Great tri practice in a crowded scenario.

I had a bad first OWS and Caius gave me some great advise. Take your time and try and get a few practices in. Your comfort and sighting will improve with every session!

Good luck and have fun!!!

Hey gang,

thanks for the tips, I ran home from work looked at the BT site and went swimming. It went pretty good, I didn't stay in long the water was pretty cold . It was hard to put my face in the water and sighting is ...or seems impossible, I ran into a bouy at one point.  We decieded to get together and practice swimming at least once a week , we are all signed up for the same tri in July.

Hope you are all having a good week so far.

Experience is the best thing for OWS.  I started swimming with a local group recently and I am sorting out a lot of OWS issues, especially sighting.

OWS issues!!! I wish I had your issues Rob - you swam a 1:45 pace in your first race. Let me know your problems and I'll be happy to take them on.

Yeah OWS is really different from doing it in the gym ! As long as I didn't try to find the bottom, which wasn't under my feet, it was easier to not get as nervous about it. I need to keep practicing and sort out the sighting issues too along with getting my face in the water .

I think I might go a head a buy my own wetsuit since I'll end up paying for it in rental fees. I really liked the one I rented it is a Neosport brand wetsuit.

2/3 of that time is made up of dolphin diving and shallow water running.  A more realistic pace is around 2:00 to 2:20 for me.

The issues are primarily sighting without disrupting my stroke too much, and doing it in a regular, consistent manner.  I am lucky in that I track very well and don't have to make many adjustments.  I can get away with sighting every 20 strokes or so.

Getting used to swimming in the wetsuit is important as well.  Just getting to the point where the constriction of the suit does not seem unfamiliar or uncomfortable. (in terms of breathing and arm movements).

If you know you will be in the sport more than 1 season, this is an excellent idea. In my first year I rented the suit 4 times before I ended up buying it. Those 4 rentals cost me almost as much as just buying the suit in the first place. Lesson learned.

One thing to remind yourself is that with your suit on, you will NOT sink. Try it. Just sit there still in the water and even without doing anything you will naturally float. Knowing that should help to put you at ease. For me, the hardest part with OWS was getting used to the fact that I couldn't see more than 2 feet in front of me in the dark lake waters. That and cold cold water which just takes your breath away. Just keep doing as much OWS practice swims as possible and in no time it will seem very comfortable.

Wow Rob, sighting every 20 strokes! If I don't sight every other stroke I'm headed off the course!

It took me a while to get used to the cold water as well. During my last OWS I had to answer the "call of nature". Lets just say it will give you a nice warm fuzzy feeling in your wet suit for a minute or two!! (another reason to own instead of rent)

I'm headed off for summer vacation with the family all next week. Looking forward to some relaxing! I'm hoping to get some running in while we are gone though. Probably not going to be on a bike for a while though. We are staying in the outer banks in NC. Might try an OWS, but I have fear of being eaten by a shark!

Have a great weekend everyone!!!!

Looks like there were some really good race times this weekend. I did my second 5k for the season. It as a PR for me at 43 mins and that made it 10 mins faster then the time I had for the same race last year. I am getting faster as the weight drops off !!

Cauis, I totally agree with you on buying a wetsuit over paying rental fees, so I am getting mine tomorrow. Good news is I was able to go down one size by waiting a month or so since I tried one, that always makes me feel like the hard work is worth it.

Not long till my next race on July 12th, I have to practice going up and back down steep hills with the bike without crashing on the decent lol.

have a good start to your week everyone !

Started my taper today for XTERRA on July 6th.  (BT 2x Oly plan)

It was this race last year, my 1st triathlon, and I DNF'd w/leg cramps 100 yards into the run.  The swim was a nightmare too.  Several months later, after stating that I'd never do something that stupid again, I joined BT and swore I'd come back and kick its tail.

I absolutely cannot wait, 12 days from now, when I'm standing in the lake and that horn goes off!

Gloria,

Great job on the setting a new PR- got to love progress (and there's no better indicator).

I'm jealous that you and Terry have races coming up in the next couple of weeks (I know I just did one), but I want to get out there and do another one - but not till Niagara in just under 4 weeks.
