phillybarb - 2009-01-17 6:24 AM Has anyone run outside this week (besides Florida) in the frigid cold?  I'm hoping to go for a run this afternoon/early evening and am hoping it is a little warmer later.  (It is currently 4 degrees, with a forecasted high of 21 degrees.)  I'm going to have to bundle up so much just to go to the pool in a half hour.  I really don't want to run on the treadmill later, but I really need to get my run mileage back up!

I ran 4 miles thursday night 0 degrees and dark, right by the water. It was cold but once I started goingI was fine.  Make sure your dressed properly: good hat, gloves, wicking shirt, running tights (I also has lined sweats over the tights) and one of those baklava things

Tough run for me today.  8 felt just as hard as last weeks 12.  Things are really not going well training wise though.  I was down 4 pounds last week from the start of the month.  Today I was up 5  WTF!!!! Guess that puts me at a grand total of +1 so far.  Freekin' groovy.

What does sculling do?  I've been doing a lot of it and I am at a bit of a loss to understand how it is helping me.

Sculling is a great way to develop the "feel" for the water that you hear so many swimmers refer to. It strengthens specific muscle groups while working on different parts of the stroke. It's also a big change from just swimming laps.

When you're doing sculling drills try doing different things with your hands. Try relaxing your fingers and see how that feels, try cupping your hands and see how that feels, rigid wrists vs rubber wrists, etc. Have fun with it!

6:00 PM - I am heading up to Glens Falls to have an Lactate Threshold test done by my coach in the morning. I think he's looking forward to this more than I am.

I am working evenings these next two weeks and will have more time to post thoughts and inspires. I hope everyone had a great weekend of training!!

Thanks, Bob!

For my birthday workout, I rode for 2 hours on the trainer on some big gears.  I love mashing big gears!  It made me happy.

My office is closed on Monday and I took a vacation day on Tuesday to watch the inauguration, so I'm looking forward to having a couple of days of higher training time.

The bad times will pass.  Believe me, I was just there.  You'll get through this tough period and have some good training times soon!  Take care!

Happy B-day Barb!!!!!!!

It was high 30's and raining here today.  I opted for 5 miles on the treadmill.  The rest of my day was spent watching football.

Bob, I took a peak into Coach Gordo's group.  He seems to be a big proponent of high mileage with only a little bit of tempo work.  Most of the plans you see in the magazines and even on this site have a fair amount of tempo effort thrown in.  What do you think is more important:  overall mileage or less mileage with increased intensity?

With that being said; good luck with your threshold testing!

If his LT test is anything like the D3 LT test it will be a rough 45 minutes.   Good luck.

I didn't get any training in today as I had a recovery ski day today.  Had several good runs and there was 5" of new snow to play in.  The temps have finally gotten up to a little more tolerable (mid 20's) and the wind wasn't too bad so it was nice.  I did just shy of 7 miles on the dreadmill yesterday afternoon so my legs were pretty tired today but still had fun.  My 6 year old skiied his first full black diamond today so he was pretty psyched!

Barb--Happy Birthday.  Hope it was a great day for you!

Bob--Good Luck!  I hope your coach doesn't hurt you too bad!

I had awesome weather this past weekend, almost in the 70's. I took full advantage and did some biking, even got a little sunburn, it is very mild but it was enough to add some spring fever!

I have a dumb question--waht are the real benefits of lactate testing? My coach has encouraged me to do this, but before i commit more money to the sport, how beneficial have any of you who have done it found it to be?

Also, on a good note--I was able to comfortably run the Houston Half Marathon yesterday. I ran easy, but it was still work since I haven't run due to my hip injury in 3 weeks. I finished comfortably in 2:06 and was very happy with that effort. I'm still taking it easy this week, but my coach wants me to come out for track tomorrow. It'll be the first time in many months, so I know I'll be hurting on Wednesday! Good fun as always!

Glad your birthday was good, Barb! Mashing big gears is always fun!

Nice job on the 1/2 mary!  Looks like your patience over the past few weeks paid off.

OK, gang, I've been out of pocket for a few days weeks, but am now back in the fold. Lotsa progress here...nice work!  Specifically K's physical therapy, J's joining the tri club, **HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BARB!!**, Brad's Disney Full and Aimee's Half. Nice work, everyone!!

At this point, I'm still working in NYC, so M-F it's all swimming and running, with cycling confined to 'weekends only', as I don't have a bike here, and I can't bring myself to do a quality workout on a gym cycle bike...it's somehow not right.

I'm also marveling at you gung-ho Stocksies that run outside when it's brutal...treadmill, please!!

Now we're into the dog-days of January, time to buckle down and knock out each workout a day at a time...it's easy to get into a lull, or just skip one because 'it's only january, and the weather is lousy'. But try not to, one day at a time....

That was good Rick! By the time the test was done I may have been lactating, I couldn't feel anything.

WOW!!! That one hurt! 20 minutes of pain. AHR 171, MHR 178, Avg Watts 274, Max Watts 411. I took it out a little too hard at the start and faded but with Kevin yelling 1/2 mile splits and pushing me I was able to bring it back hard and finish strong. All that to establish HR zones.

Aimee - I don't think there is any need to spend any money on an LT test. I would not have paid extra (although I did drive 3 hrs for it) for the test but Kevin wanted the data on all of his athletes. I think if you can get motivated yourself or get a friend over to push you through it you can get an acceptable LT by going 20 min as hard as you can and recording your HR for that 20 min. A 5K run or 20K bike TT will also give you an acceptable LT as long as you can push yourself to the limits.
