OK, now I have a bike question for a change of pace.

I bought a tri bike late last summer.  Its a nice bike but it came with pretty cheap components.  The derailleurs are Shimano Sora.  It does not shift gears very smoothly and I would like to upgrade to something a bit nicer at least for the rear since I don't change the front very often.  I see that I can get a rear Ultegra derailler on Ebay for like $40.  I know I need a 9-speed long cage but is it as simple as taking one off and putting the other on?  I realize there may be some cable adjustment but is this something I can do myself or am I better off taking it into the shop?

 Thanks

Same shoes I have been running in for 2 years: Brooks Adreline.  I have gone thru several pair in that time frame and these are about 3 months old so they are not new.

I wear running socks that hav extra cushion in thr foot.

This AM my knee felt funny.  Its all very odd.

Glad some of the advice helped...

Well I had an interesting two days.

Last night went out for a run and at mile 2 my left foot went numb.  Pretty quick.  Stopped and relaced my shoe thinking it was too tight.  No help.  By mile 2.5 it was completely numb.  You know that pins and needles feeling.  Really started to hurt.  Had to abandon my run soon after.  Not sure what was happending.  Any thoughts?

Where was it numb? Bottom of foot, top of foot, toes, ankle?

I ran across this article, maybe it will help.  Sounds like you might want to see a doctor if this persists.

The entire foot was numb.  It even extended up to the ankle.  Felt like there was something in my shoe but there was not.

It still kind of tingles today a little.  I was going to give it the weekend off and see how I feel Monday.

Thanks guys.

Is it possibly related to the back pain? A pinched nerve in the lower back maybe manifesting itself in your lower leg and foot possibly?

I read that to mean he has been running in the same brand/model for 2 years.  The pair he's running in now are only 3 months old.  No?

I'd say you are on to something but it's in the opposte side.  Maybe I've overcompensated?

I wish I knew more about this stuff.  I intended to ask my bike shop guy this weekend and forgot.  Sorry.  He's closed on Monday but I'll make a point to go by there on Tuesday to see what he says.

I am not a bike mechanic either, but I do have the same set up on my road bike and ultegra on my tri bike.  The tri bike shifts better, but I think some of it is because of it being a 10 speed the gaps are smaller.  But for $40, you will probably see some improvements.  I would suggest that if you are not familiar with it, getting the bike shop to make the change.

Here is some hope for those of us struggling with the swimming!  2 years ago I could barely swim 50 yards straight and it was anything but fast!  Last year I was working hard to get to 2:00 per 100 yards!  Today at our master's group swim meet I did the 100 freestyly in 1:30:19 and the 50 yard freestyle in 35 something.  Still slow by regular swimmer standards, but huge improvement for this former brick!

Be patient, do the drills, get some help and advice and put your time in the pool! It will come!

That's great encouragement.  Thank you.

I'll be back in the water at 9:00 am tomorrow.  If I could swim 100 yards without stopping I'd report my time to you.

Thanks everyone for pitching in on the swim tips. I'm averaging about 2:50/100. Being patient is tough part but hey my current mantra is get to the pool, do the drills and hope it pays off if not in speed then I'll accept the fitness part of increasing distance. Ken, the OS layoff sure didn't hurt your swimming, way to go !!

The time spent at the pool seems to be paying off.

Today I did 1,200 yards in the hour I was there (up from 800 or so last week) and was able to put together enough back to back laps to get in a couple of 200 yard swims.  I know that's not much, but for me it's a big improvement given I couldn't swim 50 yards a couple of weeks ago.

I timed three 100 yard efforts and did one in 1:45 and the other two in 1:47.  I've got a clinic this weekend with a coach at one of those endless pools which should be interesting.  The most important thing about the swim today is that I actually didn't hate it.  That's great progress for me!!!

Thanks for all the encouragement and support.  I know I would never have found my way into the poll without this group.  Now if my calf would just get well enough for me to start running...

If you are doing 1:45's now, you will see big gains just by getting more time in the pool working a mix of drills and longer swims to build endurance!  Consistancy is the key! Now I just have to learn to practice what I preach!

Just to be clear, I'm sure not *averaging* 1:47.  After each 100 I had to search the pool for lung fragments before I could do another one.

We slipped to page 2!

Training is going well for me this week.  I have a schedule 1 1/2 hour run today, but my feet hurt (plantar f. style) and we got some precipitation of the frozen kind so the sidewalks are a little slippery.  Looks like I have a LONG date with the pool tonight!

Anyone train with an ipod? I'm looking for suggestions of music to download. I'm eclectic so it's okay to share!
