BigReub - 2009-04-20 11:17 AM I barely touch a computer between 3 pm Friday and 9 am Monday and you all wear out the key boards.

Running any distance is a mental challenge, but doing 9 laps around the same thing is a real challenge - I had to fight the urge to quit 8 times.  So if you need a mental challenge do a long run on a short loop.

So I have to ask...how/where do you all do your long runs?  Long out and backs, huge loops of the appropriate length?  Short loops?
Or even your long rides?

I do both out-and-backs as well as loops.  Depends on who I'm going with and where I'm at.  For my longer rides I prefer to do 1 big loop, but I do also have an out-and-back near my home.

Running I usually do alone.  I go run past the local HS, around a city park once or twice and continue around the city (small town).  During long runs I really don't like short loops, I would also have to fight the urge to quit after 1 or 2 laps.  But I find that going to the park gives me a change of scenery and if I go through it more than once, I look for something different.

Some people try to figure out complex mathematical equations... I'm not that smart.  I listen to music while I run, that also helps to pass time and keep me from becoming bored and from thinking about what mile I'm at.  One basic step in Zen running is just to simply enjoy what you are doing.  Don't think about your goal, don't think about what hurts, just run.

I kept hitting the refresh waiting for Suzy to pass the 5k mark.  She's right on track right now!  She's got this!

Nice!!!   She's picked up a little.  I've got to imagine that getting around the big group of people who don't know where they belong and start too far forward takes some time.

I do most of my runs around the neighbourhood. I have some routes that I do depending on the length. For the longer runs I like to have a longer loop. It's too easy to stop if you are close to home. If I do one long loop then I know that at half way I have to run all the way back to no excuses.

I wish I got paid to post, would have a nicer bike : )

A nice thing about where I live I have a lot of options for long runs.  Most of the ones I do are out and backs but I have options for flat, trail, hills, etc.

My ipod carrying case broke last year and haven't worn it running since and don't miss it all anymore.  Having 2 kids the quiet runs are very nice.

Ruben,  I agree with you comments to Adam about loosing. My first 5K I came in dead last, police escort and everything. And surprisingly, I wasn't embarassed at all.  Lots to learn.  Plus you were brave enough to tell us about it.  That is more than a lot of people would do

Distance question.  My long bike rides are a loop.  Running is either a loop or out and back.  I couldn't do the lap thing you did. Way to go.  I also have to make sure my loop doesn't pass by my house until the very end, or I will totally bail off.

Wow, you guys are fast, I was getting ready to post a reply to Reuben's question, my toaster went off, and when I got back, there were already 6 posts!!!

Looks like Suzy is doing great!  I am bummed, can't get Universal sports to run on my mac right now...but I am tracking her and another friend LJR here on BT on the BAA website and both of them are doing GREAT!  Are the finishers almost done?  Probably by the time I submit this post.

I usually do loops of my local lake, there are options to run 4, 4.6, or 4.85 miles and I can get another 2 miles in by running across to the trails along the coast if I need a 7 miler.... I like having my car as a checkpoint to get water for myself and the dog or putting her into the car if I need to do more than 10 miles.  She would like to keep going but I feel like more than 10 miles might be too hard on her.  Shady parking spot, lots of water and open sunroof and side windows, of course!  I love my ipod, too and have favorite tracks for these long runs that are less upbeat to keep it slower.  I do think that 15 miles is the most I ever want to run though, after this weekend.

I am quite psyched though, because I was able to do my long ride of 56 miles (longest ever ride) the day after my 15 mile run and felt quite strong all the way til the end.  We took it pretty easy but there were some major climbs.   My feet felt really good, no numbness like I get on the trainer.  My bum was okay too, unlike the trainer.

Have a good Monday all!

Reuben, I prrefer out and backs, or big loops.  I want it to be that my only choice to get back to where I am going is to get back there..... NO OUTS!

I also like to mix it up, and explore.  This adds to the fun.  If you get a little lost, and discover something new..... It's worth it.

I'm tracking Suzy and a woman from my office - they're within 2 mins of each other after 15k.  I can't get the Universal Sports stream to run on my device.  Probably a good thing.

Good job on all the races this weekend, especially Tracy for busting out a nice last minute Oly w/ an injury - inspiring.  Now get that foot checked and rested!!!

I had a nice mt. bike ride this weekend.  Its nice to have a sport that you only do occassionally to really highlight improved fitness.  The mountain we ride on has a summit known as the towers, which has a nice steep final pitch going up the fire road.  I've never been able to ride the whole thing until yesterday.  And the real highlight, I never had to gear down to my small chainring and wasn't even out of breath at the top.  We rode for two hours of pure awesomeness.
