Pro 3730 NorCal | Subject: RE: cayrip's and AbbieR's Mentor Group - Closed Still here, still training! I've got an Ironman on tap the end of July and I'm considering a second IM later in the season. I will probably throw in a few sprint races along the way. |

Regular 63 Fort Collins, CO | Subject: RE: cayrip's and AbbieR's Mentor Group - Closed I've been traveling a ton for work and trying to find creative ways to fit in my training (2hrs on the trainer tomorrow, followed by 2 hrs on the bike once the sun is up). Cat--I'm training for IM St. George (78 days) and then transitioning to the cycling season where I'll do about 18 races. I'll probably throw in an oly or 2 late in the season.Cheers! |

The first part is mostly talking about what he shows in 2 and 3. Total Immersion Stuff is very good. I really like that our swim coaches uses a lot of the drills but pushes us hard and adds to the workout to build endurance. I found a great visualization site called swim smooth http://www.swimsmooth.com/ I watched these and then tried the techniques today. I was 30 seconds faster per 500 yards compared to my usual time, with substantially less fatigue. Of course, this could be because I haven't swam in a while and am well rested. However, I noticed that I was causing far less turbulence. I'm def. going to keep testing this out. |

I've been travelling for work which sets me into a downward spiral and I forget what life truly is about and how I need to focus on enjoying life instead for STRESSING about work and travel! I'm doing better now. Just like garryowen96 (Joe), I have IM St. George coming up too soon. I have a new bike though which I am buliding up for the race. I should be on it this weekend and will ride almost exclusively on it until after the race. |

Glad to hear you are starting to make a come back. Back pain is a hard one to deal with, my prayers are with you! As far as races, I am registered for the Sullivan (IL) sprint to kick off the season in April, the Bloomington IL Tri Shark (June 5th), Rodney Miller Memorial Tri (July 10th). These are sprints to almost olympic distance. I would love to do a HIM but I am being a little chicken. I have to keep healthy so I can transtion from Tri training to building miles for the NY marathon in November. |

CO | Subject: RE: cayrip's and AbbieR's Mentor Group - Closed Wetsuits I just got a full sleve wetsuit and swam in the pool with it today for the first time. Wow, it's nice to finally be able to swim somewhat fast. Normally I'm about 2:15 per 100yd, but with the wetsuit, 1:45. It made my feet float, and my head was looking straight down. It really puts you into a great swim position. But after the 1000yds I did, my arms felt more tired than they usually do w/o the suit. I definitely didn't put it on as good as it should be. But even with that, could it be too tight? It felt fairly good. It even let in some water to the neck and arms pushing off the wall. I also felt funny kicking. It just seemed that my legs were floating all by themselves, and I didn't need to kick to keep my legs up. I'm wondering if I got the size correct, or whether its just another thing that will take getting used to, and take some training to get the arms stronger. |

Cody, what was it like. I think it would be good to go to my local masters, but I'm intimidated. Not sure how i'd fit in, never having any structured swimming before. I'm also not sure what exactly they'd expect from me and how commited i'd have to be. And their sessions are in the evenings. |

Check with the coach. In the Bay area we have a few Masters groups that only very talented swimmers are part of, most of them swam in a college program. They are fast and know how to do the cool flip turns Other groups are more open to all levels. I swim Masters at the Y and we do have some great former college swimmers, but then you look at the slow lane and that's where all of us triathletes are who are doing open turns, and cursing all of the other strokes hang out Oh something else to keep in mind, some programs/coaches will give you more feedback on your stroke than others. |

I'm wondering if I got the size correct, or whether its just another thing that will take getting used to, and take some training to get the arms stronger. Great job on your first wetsuit swim! Since it was in the pool, be sure to rinse it well as chlorine can break down the wetsuit. Do not worry it will not get ruined with only a few pool swims. A wetsuit does restrict some shoulder movement so you may feel a bit fatigued especially since the suit is brand new. Be sure to hike it up in the crotch and in the armpits for a good fit. If you followed the manufacturers fit instructions it should be the right size. As for the kick the wetsuit does make your legs float, no need to kick very much. IN my wetsuit, the longer the distance the less I kick and I find myself kicking just to keep the blood flowing. One thing to remember when racing is to "wake-up" your legs a few hundred yards from the swim exit, so you should kick more often a few minutes before you get out of the water. I'm going to hold off running again for another couple of weeks, and just go stong on the biking and swimming. I had a great swim this morning! I was short on time, so I had to swim faster. I wasn't paying attention to my pace, but when I looked at the clock after my 900 yards, it had only taken me a little over 15 minutes. |

Member 36 | Subject: RE: cayrip's and AbbieR's Mentor Group - Closed I agree with Abby 100%, call the local masters coach. I was very intimidated at first. Last year the coach was not as hands on and would just say swim this distance or that and not real instruction. They have a new coach this year that is awesome with each workout having tons of drills mixed with timed swims and he has even had the underwater camera twice to help us see our poor strokes. It is very humbling to see your leg flailing or arms not finishing. |
