PinkPrincess - 2010-04-30 10:24 AM It's real quiet in here today, so I'll get things started.

How's everyone's Friday going?  It's a beautiful if cool day up here in Lake Placid - makes it hard to want to work.

Did an easy 3.25 mile run this morning.  Now resting for tomorrow's big brick: 3:45 bike (mostly at race pace) followed by 30 minute run with my Half-IronSherpa checking on me every ten miles or so and then escorting me on the run.  I'm doing it on the actual course so I'll be able to get a feel for what a realistic bike goal is (since it can vary so much depending on the course).

What's on your guys' plate for today/this weekend?

Now that I feel recovered from last weekend's HIM, I am jumping into my IM training plan.  I'm following a 30 week program from Be Iron Fit.  Saturday calls for a 1:45 bike and Sunday a 1:00 run.  I'm also going to try to get in an OWS tonight with some friends if the rain holds off.  Have a great weekend.

Good luck to anyone racing!

Your brick sounds like fun! Goodluck with it.

Today was wonderful 2,800 yard swim and a 30 min recovery run after work. Saturday is a 30 min recovery ride. Sunday is my first half-may and depending how I feel anywhere from a 30 min to 1hr 15 min bike ride after it.

Good luck to all the racers this weekend.

Today for my HIM training I did a few laps(51 miles) on the course for an olympic I'm doing in mid-June.  From what I understand, this course uses part of the IMWI course as well.  I haven't ridden in this area before, and it was a shock to the system.  I understood it to be hilly, but I totally underestimated hills.   I had alot of respect for IMWI finishers before, but to those that have done it or are doing it this year,I am in awe of you.    The good news is that the HIM I'm doing is pretty flat so by continuing to do this course over the next few weeks I should be in great shape for it.  Although, there was no way I was going to try anything other than a shuffle after that ride.

Bryan, that course is like IM WI condensed down into an olympic tri bike course.  Very tough bike course.  Nothing on the IM WI bike course like Observatory!

Planning on a 90' bike tonight, 4 mile run tomorrow, and maybe a swim or another bike on top of the 4-mile run.

Has anyone used dry land training for swimming?  Specifically resistance bands like these:

I used similar ones to those back in high school when I trained which was only about 6 years ago. I do try and incorporate sets with those for the high school girls I coach now. When I used them, I did feel that they helped improve my endurance and strength. They also kind of helped tone the arms a little more. It is really just another unique way to work on some swimming arm strength. I mainly used them with tricep type extensions to work on push phase of your stroke, just before your arm exits the water for recovery, to make sure your finished pushing the arm all the way through.

So went and had a swim lesson with underwater analysis done yesterday. I love that guy.  Was only supposed to be 1 1/2 hrs, but he spent 3 hours with me.  The short of it (my shoulder injury) was because my left shoulder was entering the water before my elbow, forearms and hand.  So in doing that, my arm was behind on the pull and the shoulder was yanking my arms through the water to catch up with the rest of the stroke.  This was also the reason I could no longer get my head up for bilateral breathing on the left.  I also still have a suck- kick (big suprise).  So he gave me a few drills he wants me to work on getting back to technique and felt totally fine.  Gonna try to work on swim as much as possible this week.

Another running question for the runners (Neal has heard this one before).  Was going to do a quick 2 mile run today and call it a day.  Got caught 1 mile away from home and had to go to the bathroom (if you kno what I mean). Anyway, has to walk the rest of the way home.  I just can't figure it out. Can run 6 miles on Friday and be totally fine and can't run 1 mile today.  Can't never really figure out when a good time to run is, or what foods are better to keep the bathroom issues at bay.  Thoughts???

It's tough sometimes to figure it out.  Not sure how long you've been running, but over time you kind of figure things out.  During the week I usually run when I get home from work, so it's been a few hours since I ate lunch and I'm usually good.  When I run in the mornings on the weekend, If I run about an hour or so after eating I'm good.  Obviously, fiber foods will make things worse, but you can't ignore those all the time.  Maybe start logging what you eat and when in relation to when you run and see if you can find what is triggering it.

That's pretty cool.  I know a lot of people who like to make the 3-hr drive up to Madison to practice riding the IMWI course because of the hills.  After getting my butt kicked on some not-exactly-too-terrifying hills in Louisville last weekend, I've been trying to figure out how to get some hillwork in considering I live in the middle of a very very flat city.  Especially since my HIM is in Door County, I'm definitely going to need to practice hill riding & running as part of my training!

I've actually never see anything like that!  I do incorporate regular strength training into my schedule, and that looks like exercises similar to things I do using just regular resistance bands or even the weight cable pulley stations at the gym.

I second the food log suggestion.  It helps to write what time you ate and how much, and also what time you ran and how you felt.  For me, I've found eating about 200 calories of something easily digested, low fiber with some protein and carbs about an hour before I run is what works best for me.  If I don't eat before running, I tend to get hungry during my run or have low energy.  If I eat too much or eat the wrong things, I get GI issues.

The race yesterday was awesome.  I had a blast and the course was incredible.  However, I was horribly unprepared for those hills/steps/etc.  I am a hurting unit today!

Carrie,
I found the RW article....if you have access to this months issue it's page 48.

Urgent need for bathroom break when NOT running is linked with Gluten per the article....lots of folks are doing gluten free....other culprits gassy veggies& fruits like broccoli, cantaloupe, bell peppers.....fiber rich foods....idc cream.....non steroidal meds....OJ/ energy drinks and of course caffeine (I require large amounts of that stuff to MOVE, have to time it early on race days!)

Urgent needs for bathroom breaks when running.....related to the lower blood flow to the gi tract during exercise....suggests avoidance of high fiber foods x24 hrs prior to running, avoidance of coffee (EEEEKKKKK!) ...dehydration or too many mid run carbs...they suggest 30-60 gm carb per hour during a race effort.

That is interesting.  I will have to look that one up.

So far is has been hit or miss for me, which is one of the reasons it took me so long to get outside running.  Pretty much my outside runs have been timed, "I've gone to the bathroom" great time for a run.  Yesterday, it didn't work.  Friday was a good day I guess. NO IDEA WHAT TO DO ON RACE DAY!!!  Last year, it just happed that when I got to the run I had to go to the bathroom and there was one there and nicely located, so perfect.

On a positive note though, my shin splints don't really hurt much anymore, and I have gotten to the point that I really don't ice afterwards.  I do sometimes warm prior.  I also walk on my heals when taking the dogs for walks.  Looks pretty funny and my labs don't appreciate the slowness of the walks.

Carrie, for figuring out what to do for race day I would recommend to practice NOW if you can.  So on a Saturday or Sunday morning, get up, eat what you want to eat race morning, wait the amount of time  it will be from breakfast to the start of the race and then do your workout.  It looks like you still have a few weeks before the race, so you can maybe figure it out.

As much as I am sick of it, I know that oatmeal works for me on race morning.  I eat it in quiet house and as I'm eating and thinking about the race, the oatmeal and nerves combine in just the right time for me to empty myself before leaving for the race.  Once I get there, I hit the port-a-potties one last time and I'm usually good to go.  I know lots of people use coffee in the morning to get things going.  Others eat a bagel with peanut butter.

Good luck figuring it out.  I've got a pretty strong stomach, so I never really had issues.

And Neal, glad to hear the race went well.  Hope you recover well.

Excellent result--especially for your first half mary AND with no taper!  Also very impressed that you managed a short recovery ride after such an effort.  Thanks for sharing the race report.

Officially back from the race, went pretty well 5 minutes faster than last year at the same event so pretty pleased. I think in retrospect some of my issues 2 weeks ago were dehydration related but no issues this race quick little flip out in the run start for the swim then pretty smooth sailing. Going to take a couple days off regroup and then start official training for the 1/2.
