Hey all,

As a few of you have seen, I did my longest ride so far yesterday, and was wondering what is meant by "good riding technique"? To me, riding technique is get on, turn the pedals, don't fall off. Clearly there is more to it than that though. What is a "good riding technique"? Previously, apart from building strength and aerobic capacity, I didn't consider any ways to improve the ride.

Grateful for any tips.

Suffice it to say that it's pretty pitiful.  So bad in fact, that I was compared to a boxer dog face and they have the most pathetic expression known to dogs.

Hey Adam.   Wish I could get a little of that techniques in.
I feel good technique is applying pressure to the pedals around the whole circle.   When I work on pedaling I try to push forward and pull backwards on the top and bottom of the stroke.  I read it somewhere it is like "wiping dog poop off your shoe".    You also need to make sure your cadence is high and resistance is low.

Bike handling is another link in good technique.  Balance in the corners and felt and comes with miles and feel.   Core strengthening with pilates, yoga or such will help too.

Learning to climb and descend is important.  Climbing is pacing the climb, when to stand  is personal preference.  The arguments are long on the benefits of standing.  I try to stay in the seat as  long as possible.
Just a few tips.  I'm not a great cyclist but can hold my own.

Ah Judi...that just breaks my heart.

Hey Adam, to tack on to what Dud recommended, take a look at this link from a blog that Joe Friel wrote in 2009:

http://www.trainingbible.com/joesblog/2009/12/pedaling-drills.html

In it, he outlines some great drills to help improve your cycling.  I periodically do the isolated leg drills on the trainer--for something that seems so easy in concept, I can't believe how difficult it is (well, at least for me anyway).  It definitely helps point out the dead spots in your pedal stroke, that's for sure!

robcolling - 2011-02-14 6:39 AM Hey all! Popping back in to say I didn't really disappear, although it may have looked that way. I took a few days off last week to rehab the shins and then I was at deer camp over the weekend, canning meat from the past season.

Consistency has always been a problem for me, to say the least.

On a positive note, today was the first day I got up and walked around without pain, so off to the gym I go this evening for a light run.

That's great news about the shins Rob.

Looks like I'll be incognito for the next three or four days or so myself.  Work is taking me to parts north...the Napa Wine Country actually.  Sounds exciting...and it is...except I'll be locked in an Embassy Suites for three days stuck in meetings.  Oh well, it's supposed to be raining, so it's probably just as well.

Happy training everyone!  I'll catch up with everyone at the end of the week.

I am enjoying the teaser spring like weather in VA this week.....sunny and 60 degrees.  Out to take a brisk walk on my lunch break today....hoping that will soon turn back to running.

Hey all - sorry that I've been MIA!

I've been off from work for 4 days.  Had a nice birthday (complete with a killer carrot cake!) filled with both a bike ride and a run.  Friday I swam and spent a ton of time cleaning.  Saturday we had a dinner party for which we ordered clam chowder, steamers and lobsters from New England!  It was like going home for me and a HUGE success for our guests.  Then on Sunday I did a 6.6 mile run in the pouring rain.

We are also scrambling to get our house on the market, so every spare minute is filled with renovations, projects or deep cleaning, so I don't get much internet time except from work!

Chris - that really, really sucks about Brielle's passport.  Here's hoping you find a workable solution!

Yes, Michelle - Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats! Smile  To be fair, it's not the best picture in the world.

Dwarf dairy goats!  Do you milk them for chevre?  I loves me some chevre!

Also, any chance they make a decent indoor/outdoor house pet?  Or would they eat the furniture?

They are too cute for words!

Yep, milking to commence as soon as the babies are weaned!

They do make wonderful pets, but they'd have to spend most of their time outside unless you want to fashion some type of diaper. I don't think they can be house-trained!  These dwarf goats only get to be about the size of a medium dog, so they are very manageable.  They are also smart, have interesting personalities and they can be very entertaining!  The boys are stinky though (if not 'fixed')...so there's that...  Oh and yeah, they might eat furniture.  We don't give them the chance, so I'm not sure how destructive they would be.

Thanks a bunch Dudley, and I like the poo wiping analogy, I think I know what is needed. Climbs (in both running and biking) have always been my weakness, so that is something I will work on, keeping an even power output the whole way. Thanks again.

Gees you are not catching any breaks are you! Sorry to hear that, but after some time, find a positive and focus on that, positivity is such a good healer on it's own. Be wary of that funk ... but if you are in it, we are around to vent to
