thor67 - 2011-05-17 12:28 PM 55 degrees? That is like a hot tub up here in Canada...Laughing

I would imagine so. Man, having the water that cold would be very very hard. I hate swimming in the first place, but being cold while doing it. I think I would quit...

What's the water temp? When is the first triathlon up north?

What is everyone else going to do?

Recovery Week 1 - Day 3 for me =)

  • More "Sweet Spot" drills @ ~400 yards
  • 1050 yard swim at Z2

Good job respecting the recovery week. To many people think that they don't need to recover and still do everything they can. I admire that. Keep up the good work.

First triathlon involving a lake is June 11 in Alberta.

Not exactly sure of temp but suffice to say the last of the ice just came of the lakes about a month ago...

I swam 1200 meters today.  Each time the breathing is getting more relaxed.  I used my watch to time myself for 18 laps (25 meter length) which I figure is close to 1/4 mile and it took me 8:50 without stopping.  I know it will be much slower in open water but this gives me a benchmark to evaluate my progress weekly.

Tomorrow is my brick workout. I am planning to bike 12 miles then run 3.5 miles if all works as planned.  It's my day off work (yeh!), but I have to drive 2-1/2 hours to go to a doctors appt with my mom.  I think I will have time to go for the bike/run on the way (nice trail I know of) and still get to my parents house in time for a quick shower and off to doctors.  If it looks like I'm running short on time I'll cut my run short, but would like to do the whole distance because next week is my recovery and I am going to take full advantage of it.

Jen - congrats on your brick workout on Monday.  These are the things I find that build that mental toughness that pays off on race day.  We can do this and I'm getting excited too.

Nice job on the swim Linda, that looks like a solid pace! Good luck on your Brick workout tomorrow and I hope your Mom's appt goes well!

Good luck with that! I'm sure you'll be kind of chilly exiting the water. Get the Neoprene hat...

Did a 52' bike yesterday evening with the "hill repeats". I managed to crunch out 6 of the 10 I was supposed to do - just mashed the pedals for 2' in high gear, recovered abt 1' with a 15'w/u (Z2) and abt a 20' c/d (Z2). I could not get to Z4 on the "hills" - maxed out at 155 bpm (the very top of my Z3).  Swam 1300 meters this am - 300 w/u, 6x50(15"), 4X100's (10"), 200 drills (alternating 50 kick/pull/swim), and 100 c/d.

Have to fly up to Connecticut (corp office) this afternoon for last minute meetings tomorrow with the big whigs - wish me luck!  Will try to get 30' Z2 run in this evening when I get there....we'll see Undecided.

Have a great day everyone!

Did a 4 1/2 mile run this morning. Going for a 75 minute spin class tonight. The instructor sets up a big screen and plays a recorded copy of a cycling race which we loosely follow. Makes for a little bit more interesting class.

Roads were wet and it was foggy out but I could see blue above the layer of fog at my house. So I saddled up and started riding. Mother nature hates me so a mile and a half from home the skies closed in and it started to pour. Quick retreat home to complete my whopping 3.58 miles ride. I went to the gym after and did 6 miles on the treadmill @ 9:17/mi and 138 BPM. Very solid run especially considering how hot and humid it was in there today.

Agreed, SPIN is a class, but keep in Mind, the SPIN actually does not translate into real bike. What I mean by that is you're barely every leaving your saddle, Never in the 3rd, or 2nd position.  Cadencs above 120. Never happens in real life.

I go to the spin class, to hear the music and be with other people. I NEVER follow the instructors as they don't know what you need. They only care about the calorie burn.  As it's an aerobic class.

With that being said, you decide what is best for you. I use each of my workouts to better myself and not waste my time.

Since you'll be following a movie I'm sure it will better translate into a real life scenerio

Have fun!

Wow you killed that bike! Well, yeah it's miserable out there. I have hill bounding tonight, I don't mind running in the rain but biking is a different story. Anyway. Stay hydrated!

Actually his music sucks! Smile

This class is called endurance spin so yes it is more like regular biking. I agree the regular spin class does not translate well into triathlon bike training. More of an add on then anything.

Cheers!

LMAO@ Music Sucks... Well that's cool then, I haven't experienced one of these classes, now interested in what it's like.  What's the name of it? I have to see if any of these are local around my area.

Pretty basic. It is called Endurance Spin. Here is the description.

Settle In. Remove your thoughts. Shed your exterior and get raw. Allow yourself to change in positive ways. What will it take for you to commit to all 75 of these minutes? What are you willing to give up so that your mind and body can be transformed? This class focuses more on long rides and is best suited for those who have been to a Spin Class before.

shellback1998 - 2011-05-16 12:00 PM I woulsay it's safe to assume it's alright to swim with your HRM. I swim with mine...

Used the HR sensor during yesterday's easy swim and it kept on sliding downward!  Surprised  Therefore, I tightened the straps and softened my push off walls.  Worked nicely w/o any problems.  However, halfway through lap 18 it snapped off and I had to stop and grab it before it sank to the bottom of the pool! ^_^

All in all, I finally got some HR readings for my swim!  Yay!

No Endurox recovery drink used since it was a short swim.  (Endurox has been helping my recovery so much and has eliminated the somewhat "over-reaching" sensation my body was feeling before taking it, THANKS!).  =)

@Scott, do you think I still need the glutamine?  Next week's workout volume is going back up and I'd like to be prepared.

I would say yes to the glutamine. You're body needs 5grams, and endurox doesn't have that much.

"Glutamine – Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid meaning it can be produced by the body. It’s also the most abundant amino acid in muscle cells. When putting your body through intense exercise Glutamine stores have been shown to significantly decrease. This deficit is too large for the body to replace quick enough and therefore leaves the athlete at a deficit for some period of time. The athlete can restock this reserve much faster with glutamine supplementation. Glutamine helps support the immune system and protects muscle tissue among many other functions within the body."

That is copied from my Nutrition Plan

I was able to get my ride in last night - I only got 17 miles in (I was shooting for 20 but then just wanted to get home).  Good Z2/low Z3 ride on a flat trail.  The trail is beautiful, goes along one of the larger lakes that I grew up on so there was some great scenery.

Skipped my swim workout this morning, but I am running this evening and will make up the swim this afternoon.  Tomorrow I took off and I'm going to take advantage of this weather and do some brick training tomorrow - ride and a run.

great progress! Glad to hear you're finally having some great weather. Give me some in Massachusetts. Once again Raining here.

How fast were you going during that 17 miles? How did you feel? You sound like you're getting more confident which I like to read... Keep up the great work!

My speed on the flat roads isn't where I'd like it to be yet - I averaged 17.1 mph for the ride.  But I realized my computer doesn't measure cadence so I need to go and get one that does so I can ensure I'm at the proper pace for the ride.

In MN we have a ton of great trails to ride on (it was voted one of the best places to bike in the US).  I do have a route I like going on some county roads to get some good hill work in.  Otherwise the paths I know of are flat.
