That's the best time at my gym, right after the lunch crowd but before the after work people. I'm going to try and go later tonight and see what it looks like (around 9pm or so). I'm running in to the after work time now, so I'll just wait.
Got to the gym around 9:30 and had a lane to myself (there were 2 of the 4 open when I got to the pool). At least I had it solo for about 20 minutes then shared with a guy who asked. I was alright with it (always am) until he started swimming down the center of the lane. What a tool. Luckily another lane opened up a few lengths after he hit me and he went over there. |

Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED So I perturbed with the Biggest Loser. I was watching last night while on the trainer. During the episodes the contestants went to the White House and met Michelle Obama who went through this big spiel about how each of these contestants was a huge fitness role model and how the country should look up to them etc. etc. Then at the end of the episode they show the clip about how the eliminated players looks today. During the clip Chris, the eliminated player, and her husband are shown riding bikes. In every shot that they're on a bike they're not wearing a helmet (and let's note they're riding on busy roads). The show just spent an hour building these people up as role models then shows clips of one of they're role models riding without a helmet. Drives me crazy. |

That's the point -- forces you to correct the back end of your swim. Band swimming is super effective. |

Although my workout called for 20x50 on bands then 10x100 pull so not a whole lot of using the legs today. |

Note the ankles. I believe they make "bands" specifically for this, but it seems to me that anything that ties your ankles together would suffice. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED So, I was reading that thread called "when do you stop being a newbie?" Don't ask why I even opened it, as everything the OP puts up on this site is ridiculous. Anyway, I thought it was interesting that some people believe that anyone can KQ (not just OP but others as well). Thoughts on this? I absolutely disagree. No way everyone can qualify for Kona. Even if we all put in the amount of work it would take to qualify and were physically and mentally dedicated to the goal....well, not gonna happen. I think that's when it boils down to genetics. Unfortunately (or fortunately? ), we are all wired differently - potential, ability to recovery, ability to go fast, metabolism, etc. I was shocked to read that people believed that. I don't think it's bad to aim for the top, but I'm also a realist. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Totally, agree. That is like saying everyone will get to Boston. While you are improving so is the rest of the lot so the pool is getting faster, and faster. Nice to shoot high but unrealistic ... |

Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED No way can ANYONE qualify for Kona (the traditional way). I know I couldn't. Even if I could build up to those distances, I just don't have the "go fast" part in me. |

Extreme Veteran 826 Bristow | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Nice 45 min ride this morning in Z1. Based off of what my HRM said I stayed in the zone the whole time. However on hills I went into Z2. I assume this is normal and as long as the majority of the workout is in the zone you are suppose to be in then your fine? As for anyone can qualify...I think you can set any goal you want to and do your best to strive to get to it. However, our bodies genetics/limitations can set us back from reaching that goal sometimes. I do think there is something everyone can excel at out there you just have to find what it is. Right now I am looking forward to completing an IM in the future and if my mind and body get to a point that I could consider qualifying then I will. That is a Looong way away though and I am enjoying it all right now and hope to continue to enjoy it. Hope everyone has a great day! Edited by kidtri33 2012-04-11 10:28 AM |

What do they attempt to correct that a pull buoy can't? A pull buoy puts you in the correct position but acts as a crutch so you don't know how to maintain the position without the pull buoy. A band straps your legs together and if you don't get your hips up (all by your self) you're going to be dragging an anchor as you swim. |
