Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I find it harder to swim after the bike as you are working your shoulder muscles on the bike. If it is a shorter bike it may be less of an issue. But if you find your arms tired on the swim, it is something to think about. You will find that if you use the marathon stick and your muscles are not all fried, that it will not hurt. It is one way to measure how toasted your calves are. Mine lastnight... very tight. One nice thing about the gold membership is that you can select the number of workouts you want to do in each discipline per week, enter the start date for your training and the race date and it will create the workouts to get you there. Not necessary, but a nice feature. You don't have to think so much about where you should jump into a plan. For my 2nd HIM of the year I will be basically jumping into my 13 week plan around week 6 and repeating weeks 6 through 9 until I get to the final build and then will amp up from there. Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Man have I been sick!!! I have to get caught up with you all but I haven't been able to train for the last 7 days. It's been over a year since I've had that much time off. I'm feeling better today but will still rest until tomorrow. Hope everyone's training has been going well! |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did a 13 mile bike as first part of short brick, and averaged 17.5 mph, which is a big milestone for me. I was pumped. I know I've got a ways to go, but not bad for dragging 229 pounds. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samantha, good going on finding the swim classes. Good investment Ceril, those compliments are golden! Mitch, ugh, bad bug you have been battling. Hopefully it's on the ropes, so a little more rest should knock it out! Know I'm missing a lot from the posts, but been kinda crazy couple days. Still getting in S/B/R to maintain sanity. Had a really nice swim this morning....2500, that included 2000 straight through. Haven't done that in a while. Not super speedy at 2:08/100, but still an improvement over last yr. Felt nice and smooth, and I found that "I think I could swim all day" pace. I have had the "I suck at biking" tape playing in my head too much. So targeting some fun things on the bike. Did a ladies ride last night. Forgot my garmin, and that kinda made me happy. Planning to ride w/ a BT friend on Saturday morning. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve- I am tight on cash and I will forgo the HR monitor right now. Speed work is not in my game this season. But you sold me on the Gold membership. What an easy way to know what my workouts should be and have it mapped out for me. I was hoping you could take a look and tell me what you think. Here are last weeks numbers (minus swimming) Monday run 58m/4mi; Tues run 51m/4.5mi; Wed run 45m/3mi; Thurs Bike 30m/10mi; Fri off; Sat. run 56m/4mi; Sun bike 58m/14mi. I now have a planned workout based on 3s/3r/3b. Mon off; Tues swim 45m/1600; Wed bike 1.57h/29mi; Thurs run 59m/4.9mi, swim 34m/1200; Fri Bike 47m/11mi, swim 56m/1950; Sat bike 1.10h/17mi, run 39m/3.2mi; sun run 1.18h/6.5mi. I think this is what you were asking for. The swimming is going to be tough. Let me know if this seems good to you. My calves were significantly better today, but you are right about the pain that comes from using a stick on trashed muscles. Digging the new features of the Gold plan. It lasts until next year, so I can use it to help with IM 2013..woohoo. Larry - your bike time is fantastic. Definitely deserving of celebration. Great Job!! Carol - you are rocking it and sticking with it in the stressful times is the hardest, but the very best. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samantha, Your swim actually looks like your strongest event currently. The numbers look about right for your long bike and run. The bike is more of a bump up than the run is. Your first jump up should be ok 15 to 30 miles, you can bring it up over 10 weeks by 5-10 miles per week, so that should be alright. I might be tempted to go 4 run 3 bike 2 swim or 4 3 3, so your run is a touch stronger and make your 4th day just a slow short run say 2-3 miles for the entire course of the plan. I would keep the 3rd swim lite as well and have 2 main swims. In any case sounds like your gold plan shall be solid and tailored to your timeline. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve – I notice more shoulder/back strain on the old mountain bike than the new ride. The swim last night probably suffered some but I really enjoy the time and use it as an active recovery as much as a training session. Mitch – Good to see you back. Feel better. Carol – Way to hang in there. It is nice to put the watch and training plans away once and a while. Enjoy! Larry – Great bike. Celebrate those milestones. Biked 10.4 miles last night at about 12.6mph and hit the pool. Really like the new bike but still need to get the shifting system down and I miss the granny gears on some of those hills. I do not have a cadence meter right now and am trying to find my zone. Also find getting the shoes in the clips difficult to start and not sure if I see much benefit of the clips yet. What are the tradeoffs between clipless shoes/pedals, and a cadence meter? What would be the smarter investment? And I'd be up for Kona... someday |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Joe, I noticed a big difference when I got the bike shoes. It won't take too long to get used to them, and everyone falls to the ground with them clipped in at least once. I don't have a cadence meter, but sometimes I'll time myself for a minute, and count cadence, just to see where I am at. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just got a new pair of Brooks PureCadence the other day. Ran in them yesterday for 30 minutes, then changed shoes and finished my run in my Brooks Glyercins. The two shoes have a totally different feel to them, neither is bad but neither is great! Going to try and slowly break in my new shoes. What shoes does everyone run in? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jford2309 - 2012-04-26 7:24 AM . James I have been a loyal Brooks runner for over a decade and I've run in every shoe they make! I've had tremendous foot issues the last couple of years and I switched to Pure Cadence and within 2 runs my foot problems improved 90%!! I want to try Newtons, but afraid to change when I've found something that works! I wasn't a big fan of the Glycerin either. I just got a new pair of Brooks PureCadence the other day. Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() James - was gonna ask how you liked the pure cadence as I'm curious. I have glycerines also and so far so good. I did notice a huge difference with clips/shoes - my new bike was initially very tough to clip in/out then I realized that there was a place to adjust the clip with an Allen wrench and I loosened it up a lot - so now it's very easy to clip in/out which gives me some peace of mind about falling! As far as cadence on the bike without a meter - in the past I've either tried to find songs with the beat/pace that I wanted to keep or if you have a smart phone you can download a metronome app to keep a beat. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a heavier runner, and have had minor knee issues in the past. I now use the Asics Kayono shoes (I think they are on version 18). I'm on my third pair now, and they have been very good to me. They are a heavier shoe, with more support. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have heard the clipless pedals are amazing once you get use to them, so hang in there. Have you read anything on the best way to utilize them? Maybe we can all shoot for Kona 2020 Set my alarm wrong and missed my first swim lesson this morning. I am seriously bummed. I love my asics 2150, which are now 2170 and are a small step down from the kayano. |

More of a mid foot strike which is very efficient and helps with injury prevention.. The glycerine's are more of a traditional shoe that puts you in a more heel striking position. My advice is stick with the cadence. You'll be much more efficient and injury free running like that. I switched to Newtons 2 years ago and not only broke all my running records at all distances but I trained virtually injury free. I am a huge fan of a natural running stride! Changes my life! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 4 mile run on the Treadmill @ 8:30 or so. 1st run back after being sick. Felt great but not 100% yet. Going to do an easy swim tonight and not push too hard this week. Do not want to get sick again! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Readjusted my planned training to incorporate 4 runs. I think that was a great suggestion. I am very slow. It looks really good to me and if all goes well I will be ready by August. Thank you! I have a 25 mile bike event on Sunday, which happens to fit in with the schedule I made. Yeah! I am looking forward to riding wiht a bunch of people. I am also trying to move this weekend. Busy, busy! Mitch -Great pace on your run! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve--Loved reading about your progress over time. That is good motivation! Mitch--glad to see you are back at it! Quasi and Larry-Doing awesome with the bike Carol--nice swim and good plan about making fun plans for the bike (I need to do that for running) Samantha--congrats on finding a good plan; I'm also training for a HIM in August and I really need to get with the plan. Joe- I'd go with clipless shoes and pedals--makes a huge difference when you can really pull up. I have a cadence meter but I don't know how much it actually helps me--some people may know better how to use it than I. James- Way to go with the lunchtime swim--hope you had time to eat too! I am back to running with the blessing of my PT and my hip flexor is better, though not 100%. I really want to be prepared for a HIM in August but also have to be careful not to reinjure. |
