Yup, it's the old course. No out and back up whiteface: that's the new course.

cheekymonkeys1 - 2012-12-25 8:05 PM Thanks for the camp input.

I drove the Rev3 Quassy course today. I wanted an idea of what I might be getting in to.

O.M.G!

I think I'll spend the weekend in LP instead lol

Good morning.  What about the course made it so much "fun"?  From what I have read about it, it looks like a lot hills; is it like the IMWI course, where it is really hard to get into a rhythm because the hills make it difficult to manage momentum?

By my calcs, week one for the Finksters starts next week... who's with me in that boat?  Are we ready and excited?!

I'm two weeks into marathon training. I'm used to doing an end of season marathon where I can just concentrate on running, adding in the winter bike training is a real challenge. I hope my body gets used to it soon, IM training is coming!

Ok--I need to figure out heartrate zones. I think Fink gives the age formula which is not reliable. I did read the indepth heartrate thread from Mike Ricca. My cheap polar does not have a lap button to figure out the average of the last twenty minutes of a thirty minute run and I can't find my Garmin strap. Will the Garmin work with a polar strap? I just want to make sure I am training in the correct zone. A bit concerned about going slower to get faster business. I hope it prepares to complete LP.

I do not like the way this sounds.  I'm regretting signing up for the Oly and Half.

The only reliable way is to get tested.  Hands down.  Everything else is going to be approximation.

Garmin will not work with a polar strap.

I've ridden IMWI course and the IMLP course (training, not in a race). Different types of hills. WI hills are shorter...and steeper. LP lets you get into more of a groove as the hills are MUCH longer climbs.

I went out and did a 10 minute warm-up and then I ran a 5K all out to get my estimated max HR and then for the bike i did a 30 minute all out spin on the trainer to get my max HR.  (195 run/191 bike).  I didn't use the lap button at all.  Over 3 days I took my HR in the morning (avg. 49) and then used the Krakovian method to figure out zones.

Target Heart Rate = ((HRmax − HRrest) × % intensity) + HRrest

As far as "going slower to get faster", it has definitely helped me this past year.  I started HR training in February of this year.  My target HR was between 150 and 167.  At first, I was averaging about 8:30/mile to keep this HR.  This was frustrating, since prior to HR training I was a 1:29 half marathoner/3:15 marathoner.  In about a month I could already see my HR go down and my pace improving.  By the end of the year, my personal bests improved to a 1:22 half marathon and a 2:59 marathon.  It was incredible to see the improvement.  I don't believe HR training was the only thing that helped, however, it did allow me to train smarter to let me know when I was going to hard or too easy.  In an endurance race like Ironman, I buy in 100% to HR training.

Can't wait for day 1 of the Fink plan and good luck everyone!

I just signed up for the Fireman Ironman camp June 21-23 ... looks like they have a session in May as well (which I can not make) ... I am fairly certain this will be my only preview of the course hope to meet some of you up there.

Thanks for the heartrate monitor info. Most of my riding has been in spin class or on the spin bike at the gym. I put the bike on the trainer today and downloaded one of the sufferfest videos. I will do my swimming tomorrow since the pool is closed January 1. I think the Fink plan has us swimming and a 30 min run.

Happy New Year All--May we all be smiling as we cross the finish line at LP!!

My boys brought home from school a serious cold, and as luck would have it, it's my turn to enjoy it. Up until this week, I haven't missed a workout (since 11/5/12) on my QT2 IMLP program, and now I've missed two short swims and a short bike (recovery week). I was worn down toward the end of my three weeks of about 11 hours of SBR each week, that with the holiday madness, I know why I'm sick now. So, I know I started with a maintenance phase, and it seems like I'm just now starting the real program; do I sit this cold out a few days and get back to at least 90%, or fight through each scheduled workout regardless of how I feel? (Being my first IM, I'm obviously concerned about botching this up). It's so hard to let go, must be my bit of OCD.

A few pages back there was a mention of Fireman iroman camp. I attended in 2011 and 2012, great people and great experience. The price is also quite reasonable compared to other camps. Recommend it.

Fink people, training is on! I have the old edition of the book, so I'm not sure if he changed the plans at all but the first day in this one is a killer: rest! I think I can manage to complete this workout.

Good luck everyone!

Happy New Year all!  First real day of formal training activity!  May this be a great year, with health, happiness and a sub 17 hour time.  We will do this!

With that, let's roll!

I would not worry about it.  Get healthy and get back at it.  It's about consistency over the next 209 days.  A few days right now will not make one bit of difference....I had to take five days off due to illness last week.  I'm back at it this week and don't feel like I missed a beat.  In fact...I feel even better and stronger than I have in a while.

Happy New Year, training freaks!!

I've been away from the computer while on break, so I'll need to catch up with what the training has been looking like. Just popping in to celebrate the formal start of the 30 week programs!!  I ran our First Run 5k this morning with a short little warm-up. My lungs are a bit upset with me.

Onward!

Thanks runninirish, I took the advice and did nothing but rest yesterday with lots of raw fruits. Feeling better today, but I need to get more on top of this cough before I start cardio again. I think by Saturday, I'll be back at it. Lesson learned.

Happy New Year all.

I did the Fink for IMFL and want to do the same for IMLP.  I want to get stronger on the bike but since time is limited I need to take something off the schedule.  So my plan is to do the "Just Finish" swim, the "Intermediate" run, and the "Competitive" bike schedule.  I am the weakest on the bike and the IMLP bike course has a reputation for a tough bike so I want to train up.  My bike split was 7:30 on a day the winner took 4:04 so I have a lot of work to do.

Anyone experienced on the Fink plan think this is a good idea or stupid idea?

Happy first day of training.  My plan is starting with 4 - 6 weeks of downtime due a separated shoulder.  I'll catch up though.  The first day of training for IMCDA in 2011 started with a broken rib.  It's best to get the pain out of the way early.

I will probably end up in about the same place with my training; this is my first full training cycle with Fink.  I find my bike fitness drives everything else, but the tricky part is hitting the key long rides on the weekends given time constraints.  We'll see what happens in the 2nd 10 wk block!  Good luck with your training!

I'm doing the Fink competitive plan with an added 12 week marathon build that culminates with a Memorial Day marathon (I'm leading a pace group,  not racing it).

Today calls for 45 min on the bike followed by a 15 min run. I'm sorry, but if I'm getting dressed to run in this weather, I'm not only going for a 2 mile run. I'll probably do my 5 mile loop at a recovery pace after yesterday's 5k.

I'm actually swimming tonight too ... and have already decided to tweak the schedule and get my swims done as they work into my schedule each week. I swim from 5:30pm - 6:30pm with my Masters group, so I'll end up moving them around to accommodate family schedule. But I'll get in at least 3 per week on most weeks. Sometimes 4.

I think this is a fine approach. Fink having three plans allows for folks to select the one that is right for them or to mix and match a bit. I believe that by default I do pretty much the same thing. I am no expert so take this all with a grain of salt. I am not strong in any of the three disciplines. I am a middle of the pack kind of guy. For me, I know that I am going to spend the most time on the bike and that the course is challenging. Thus I want to work as hard as I can on the bike. If I have to cut back in one area, it will not be the bike. I also know that I could swim a ton and really only improve my swim performance marginally in the big scheme of things. I finish pretty much around 1:15. I have never swam as much as fink outlines in the competitive program. If I did (or more), I cannot possible imagine getting out of the water any faster than 1:05. Ten minutes. I should be able to make up that and more on the bike IF I work hard on the bike in training. Finally, I scale back my running versus what Fink has in the competitive plan. Running long really beats me up (I am getting old). I try to manage this. All told, I am probably follow the competitive plan for the bike only and then somewhere in between the intermediate - just finish plan for the swim and run.

Bottom line, the best investment of my limited training hours is on the bike. I tend to finish 13.5 hours - 14.5 hours fwiw. So, to me, your plan makes perfect sense.
