The bike is a perfect fit. He set it up specifically for HIM distance which is cool. He also explained "everything" about every aspect of the fitting. Awesome service. I have the a Felt B16 as well. I love it. Cool. I like the black and white color of the men's B16. This is a young buck I saw on the bike trail. |

Veteran 439 Dartmouth, Massachusetts | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Steve, I think you're going to be beating me up for my training ideas for quite sometime! I know you're correct in my mind but my kill my body to get a good workout mentality is going to be difficult to change! Ken: Congrats on the 3:30! I know it wasn't quite the time you were looking for but its still a very impressive effort!
My kids settled down a little bit so I got on the bike for about 40 minutes. I did a pretty light session; I just wanted to workout some of the lactic acid out of my legs...and I think I did that. I did it while watching the football game and I downshifted a gear each change of possession during my biking. If nothing else, it kept the time moving a little bit. |

Ken, I'm sorry the race didn't go quite as planned but that is a excellent time - especialy with the heat and humidity that you encountered. Even us natives are having trouble with the heat we are experiencing in JANUARY. Great job to you and recover well from those GI issues. Kate, so glad that the bike is perfect for you!!!! You will rock the HIM. |

Expert 1608 Grapevine, Texas | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Hey all, first of all, thanks for the encouragement re: yesterday's race. I feel better about it today, thanks in large part to you! Ken, sounds like a pretty darned good race to me! Temps/humidity play a huge role. But I'm just thrilled to know people who can actually run a 3:30 marathon! Pam, good job on your race! And you got to enjoy a bit of social time a well . How did your hubby do? I think we might be long lost sisters..similar running personalities and paces, and I have also used the coins trick at the pool. Steve, yes, the longer the run, the less able to think clearly! Kate, great job on the 8.2 miles. And NICE BIKE!!! I saw it on your bike porn thread. Love the stand you guys have too. Gotta love seeing some wildlife along the way, though I would not want that buck to wander out in front of your bike! Brian (bmiller), so did you choose inside or outside for the ride? Stu, nice article about TM vs. outside. I'll run in almost anything weather wise, but have developed an aversion to running in the rain when temps are 40 or less, thus the 80 lap anomaly! Brian (bigN), hope the soreness from those cramps is better! Samantha, I like the baked apple idea. I need to give that a try for dessert, yum! We have some brittish friends who told us the other day how weird it was that in the US we ALWAYS put cinnamon on cooked apples. Never thought about that, but it's true. Mike, hope you will try again on the pic. Jay, good thing you have Steve to balance you out . I think age is a big determining factor in how bouncy we are. Hubby & I were talking about whether we missed playing volleyball the other day. Many moons ago I played HS and college women's v-ball, and Kerry & I met on a co-ed team. We agreed that the whole idea of diving for balls, quick lateral movements, and sprained ankles is just not appealing any more.

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Ken, a 3:30:xx is a respectable time. I know you are capable of more, but you did get er done. Just so you guys know this marathon for Ken is 5 minutes off of a qualifying time for Boston .. at it was not an ideal race for him. This puts him at around the 11Th percentile or so in this race and he can hit the top 4 percentile or better on a good race. Your IM marathon may feel similar. Tell me more about your GI issues, hydration etc. Need to really get that under control for a longer race. Make sure you get the rest you need for your legs for the next two weeks Ken, it can make or break the reast of your season. Jay I don't want to come off as disciplining you, you can do whatever you want for fun. I just worry about the sustainability of your training. I can want you to train smarter, but you certainly can do whatever is fun for you. My only request is that if it catches up to you that you consider the timing of things... you can still do them, posibly even in the same day.... just a little farther apart or with a slower build up. Like 5 minutes of statdium stepmaster after a 1 mile warmup and followed by a 3 mile eash run before swiming. Next week 10 minutes, and in a month ya possibly 20 minutes. Not trying to be right just trying to keep you healthy for the long run. Fitness is a long run event. Take care of you and have fun as you wish. We can figure out where the balance is as time goes on. That is a serious nice bike. I keep my bike in a glass case, after having killed my felt. I got a Cervelo P2 and feel that riding it will risk scratches, chips or wear. The bike is clearly better than I will ever be on it. Full carbon is so much smoother on a bumpy road, very noticeable difference over the mixed aluminum and carbon Felt S22. Edited by Baowolf 2013-01-13 3:36 PM |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Our typ A's will be thinking about Aero helmets and disc wheels soon. The helmets cost 150 to 250 and save about as much time as the $1000 to $3000 wheels, roughly 5 minutes or so in a IM for helmet and 5 minutes for the wheels. Or some such course, wind, bike speed will impact results. |

Expert 1384 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Ken - really great job! Running in the heat is a killer, especially as the distances get longer. You'll BQ under the right conditions, no question. And every marathon completed is a HUGE accomplishment. Congrats. btw, I dream of breaking 4:00, so 3:30 sounds Olympian to me! Hope the recovery goes well so you can get back at it :-) You and Carol are the heros of the weekend! Congrats on the new toy bike, Kate. She sounds like a beauty. And the best thing about new equipment is how it motivates you to be on it more! Steve, hope no serious plumbing issues. Sounds like California is in a really weird weather pattern and I guess the east coast is getting the opposite (we were 70 here again today - bizarre!) Had my first 1000 yard swim since getting back in the pool. The hour swim "race" at the end of the month won't be pretty, but should be okay. I resolve never to let all 3 disciplines go like this again. I don't mind the rebuild in one sport, maybe even two, but the rebuild on all 3 is kind of different both physically and emotionally. I've lost alot in the last two months. Have a great evening everyone and happy putting your feet up Carol and Ken! Stu |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Day 1 HIM training in the books. A kick-butt 2950 swim this AM. went longer than expected, but it all felt good. Averaged about 1:32/100yd as well which for me is a good pace to keep up. Good mix of intervals & longer swims. Steve - I have a P2 as well, and had the 'glass case' thoughts about it when I first had it. Now that we've been through a couple years of races/training, and it has a few battle scars, its still as awesome as ever, and has a few stories to tell. As for helmets & wheels, I did get a set of Mavic Cosmic Carbones for my ride last year. Do they make a difference? A little bit, I guess. Do they look really cool? Heck, yeah! Don't know if I could ever wear an aero helmet, despite my kids telling me I need to get " a cool helmet" and not the roadie one I have now. |

Regular 140 Roseville, CA | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Baowolf - 2013-01-12 10:25 AM Wow 30F is pretty warm it was -15F lastnight here. I assume your pool is heated? Ah well, it is still kind of the offseason, though we are just about to the point where ya just gotta dive into your program and get er done. So ya I don't listen to music when I swim because I measure distance by number of strokes. So ya last workout was 975 strokes. When you get into county out 2000 strokes music can be distracting. I could just go by time knowing what pace I have the pool set to, but then it is hard to know how I am progressing towards the end of a set or whatever. Yes my pool is heated but still outside. Winter is the best time to swim because it is always empty. But 30's is a bit too cold. We have a local indoor pool that I need to go check out. I can't believe you can count strokes for the duration. I can't even count out laps for a set. Now that I have the 910 I love not having to worry about counting. I did get out for a bike ride Saturday. Little chilly after a couple of hours but better that the trainer. I find it amazing how hard I feel like I have to work on the trainer to keep my heart rate up yet on the road I have to work to keep it down. Also got a decent run outside yesterday for the first time since my calf has been feeling better. I took it easy and it felt great with no indication of flaring up I want to get a helmet so I guess I need to check them out at the local shop to get a feel for them. Wheels hopefully I can borrow from my brother who has a few sets of various shapes. Kate - Congrats on the new bike and solid run. How does riding in aero feel? It took me a few rides to get comfortable. I still have a little problem staying down for long periods of time. It starts to get at my bad shoulder. I try to stay down on flats and downhill then give myself a break on the uphills. Mike - Solid swim, do you have a swim background? 1:32/100 is a nice pace for Day 1 of your plan. -Brian

Ken, I wish I could get a 3:30 under my belt!I have a question. When is it too windy to ride? On Friday I loaded up my bike and drove outside of Doha. The sand did not blow in but it sure was windy. It was blowing at around 30 MPH. I decided to drive back home and did a two hour ride in the gym and followed it up with an 18 minute run. Happy training this week! |

Expert 1608 Grapevine, Texas | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. Some very nice training going on here! Stu - nice 1,000 yd swim! Mike - way to go on day 1! Nice setup. Are those snacks in front of your trainer? Brian - glad you could get outside! Tom - a lot tougher cyclists out there than me, but 30 mph...no thank you! Safety wise, the cross winds scare me, and fitness wise, the headwinds do! Steve - my total lack of excitement over race wheels and aero helmets confirms my type B ness, as if there was any doubt. Speaking of which, feeling a bit burned out, and facing a high volume week. So I decided to "just run" today, and work on relentless forward motion (no stops...walk while testing eating drinking etc.). That piece was not a success either for reasons I won't bore you with, but I did get 9 miles in, and the dog got some exercise.

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. I often bike in 20 mph wind, sometimes 25, ocassinally 30 mph. I haven't had a day where I biked inside because it was too windy, but we have had those days. Anything over 30mph is probably meh good call to go indoors. The risks start to outweight the benefits, especially if there is risk of sand coming in with the wind and messing things up big time. Don't get discouraged, Mike had "gills surgically implanted". Where do you live again, I need to come visit so I can get lessons from your coach, seriously. Does he do crash course instruction like a compact 2-3 week program to get me in the right direction, swimming is my definate worst sport. Edited by Baowolf 2013-01-14 2:25 PM |

Regular 140 Roseville, CA | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. What are everone's thoughts on hill training while on the trainer? HIM Oceanside has a couple of short steep climbs. I have been getting some hills in when I get outside on the weekends but those are my long ride days so not really hill focused. Today my plan says to work on hills but it will be dark by the time I get home. When on the trainer I will do intervals of the different levels but it is not the same at climbing up a 10% grade. -Brian Edited by BMiller71 2013-01-14 3:13 PM |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group - Sorry Closed. You can simulate hills on the trainer by putting it in a bigger gear so that it is harder to push dropping forcing you to push harder with lower cadence and speed. Most steep hills you are looking at a cadence of around 60 and speed of around 8 mph. You can further simulate this by raising the front tire, shifting trainer hookup if necessary and then you have the angle and the tension to simulate a hill. I have a nice 10 mile hill I practice on during nice weather. It is a mental effort to go up hill for 1 hour. You can do hill repeats as part of your long ride, just put it in the first 1/3 or first 2/3 after all your race will be long with hills 8). |

Mike, the pain cave does not as bad as you made it sound. Amazing pace on the swim! What's your PR on OWS? Kate, awesome bike you get there. Is it your first tri bike? Thanks for the inspire!!! Brian, could the pain you describe be related to achilles tendon? (between the ankle and mid-calf). Steve, do you think mental focus declining in long events can be related to lower blood sugar level? I kind of concluded this based on personal experience. Thoughts? Very happy with past week of training, I reached my target volume of 600 minutes (sounds better than in hours) :-) If it had not been for the plan' I would have slacked for sure. Hope to be able to keep the winning streak. 1/1 is a streak right? Now I wish I could say the same for the crunch challenge...
