10K swim is BadA$$ WOW awesome work. And congrats on signing up for another Marathon! I'm doing the Chicago thing again this year. |

I loved every minute of the experience last year, but I wanted to try some new stuff this year. I'm about 80% committed to doing Fox Valley too. 6 weeks in between marathons should leave me ready to roll. Also thinking about an early September 70.3 again. It's that time of year that loading your calendar with races seems like a good idea |

But maybe add a 3rd and join the Maniac's ;-) Branson 70.3 is in Sept. I wont be doing it tho. Id like to! but can't |

CLOSED FOR TRAINING Jenheaslip - 2013-01-28 5:39 PM I think that's what I need to focus on more, the recovery. I don't have any consistent regimen besides stretching and some kind of bar or Gu recovery drink and Ibuprofrin. What would you suggest? And ice - like ice packs? The hot tub at the Y helps with soreness, when I have time to get in. How does the fish oil work? I also think some of it might be something genetic. My mom's arthritis started when she was a teenager, my dad's always had pain in his back and knees, and my brother has fibromyalgia. I was extremely active when I was growing up and always had aches and pains- saw a chiropractor, slept on a hard mattress, all that. I go through Ibuprofrin like there's no tomorrow, and my husband works out just as hard and often and hardly ever feels any pain. Same with my friends. Minor pain is no problem, but the right knee pain is debilitating. It stops completely when I slow down and walk, but I can barely move if I try to run. It's just weird. Jen, here's a good challenge for you. I'm doing it too. Only 15 minutes a day. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=475366 |

I tried to find the article talking about recovery methods but can't find it. What I recall was that ice or cold is the preferred method of recovery. A hot shower/hot tub actually inflames the muscles more than they already are from working. I'll keep looking for it but it talked quite a bit about ice baths, etc. For me - my recovery method is to fill the bath tub with cold water as soon as I walk in the door from a run. If it was a long run (more than 1.5 hours) I might drink a protein shake while its filling. As soon as its full I'll ease into the tub. I've noticed that I'm not nearly as sore the next day after I've spent about 15-20 minutes soaking my legs in the cold water. If I'm at the gym I usually don't do anything but go home (an hour drive) but most of my workouts there are shorter and wouldn't require much recovery. Steve |

Master 1730 Straight outta Compton | Subject: RE: mcgilmartin's 2013 Mentor Group~ let's get swimming! CLOSED FOR TRAINING I was also going to adjust a protein shake after your workout. Invest in a $15 smoothie maker and load up on fruit. A cup of skim milk, a scoop of whey protein, and some fresh fruit will make you feel a lot better the next day. |

CLOSED FOR TRAINING TravelJunkie303 - 2013-01-28 6:52 PM I was just kinda kidding about the whirlpool effect so as to make my failure sound that much cooler. I started with a flutter kick. When all I was doing was essentially making waves I went to the full hip scissor kick. Both had the same effect. I think I am going to stay away from that drill for awhile as my laps before that didn't suck as much. I notice when I swim without my legs I seem to go a good deal faster and I don't have to breathe as often. Next week I will schedule a lesson a week for awhile. I used an instructor in 2011 and that helped me get back into things. I haven't taken any lessons since because it was more a lack of volume on my part not technique. Now I am getting the workouts in so it's getting to be a technique issue. This is actually a common problem. I'm going from memory, but it usually affects runners and it might be because they kick from the knew - you want to try to kick from the waist (I think - try googling it) Personally, I don't kick much when I swim. Maybe a little here and there but mostly when I notice I'm off balance or need to make a quick adjustment to my position. |

Thanks for the advice! I'm in a better mood today. Still have a lot of hip pain, but made it to my Pilates class and did a light swim afterward and I think it helped. Sorry again for the rant, I'm just tired of being in pain!

New user 20 | Subject: RE: mcgilmartin's 2013 Mentor Group~ let's get swimming! CLOSED FOR TRAINING Gadget/infotainment question here, I've currently got an older (entry level) Polar that I use as an HRM for running, and one of the things I like about it is I can jsut wear the thing as a watch, not just as another accessory to include in the gym bag. I've got a CSC-10 and the Garmin HRM strap that I use for Trainerroad on my bike, but have been itching a bit to get gps on my runs, and outdoor workouts. Any thoughts here? Considering I've got the harm strap and CSC10 already, it looks like I could either go with the base model Garmin 910xt and be covered across the board, or a combo of the Garmin 610 and Edge510 bike computer for about $300 each?? Right now I track my swimming with a Timex ironman stat stopped recognizing the HRM strap a while ago. Any thoughts or advice here? I've focused on the Garmin since i've got the hrm and speed sensor already I'm a numbers kinda person so i love being able to track metrics on my performance and workouts whenever possible, |

Now I need to get a bike, wetsuit, helmet....... I should have it all in plenty of time for September 22 and the Portland Triathlon. Then two weeks later I run the Portland marathon. Not a bad way to end a season. |
