Long run in the bag.  I'm now heading out for my first OWS of the season.  Despite the fact that I've been swimming in open water for the last 2 years, as usual I am quite scared about this first swim.  I think it's mostly related to the fact that I know the water's going to be COLD (last week it was 10C) and I really hate getting into cold water.  But with my first open water tri in just over 2 weeks, it's time to bite the bullet.

Wish me luck!

You're such a good swimmer you will be in and out before you know it!  Have fun.

Kept everything super short and super easy just to get some blood flow back in the legs and shoulder.  With age, comes wisdom.

8hr training day today. Swim/bike/run. I feel like I'm doing ironman. I've got SPF 500000 on via Planet Sun. We will see Jason. We will see. battle: skin vs sun.

Hiya,

I'm super busy as usual, just following bits and pieces on the phone.

I just need to share this: I went for the club swim session today and at some point during the last 20 minutes, the coach said to me (once again) that I should be kicking from the hips, not the legs, then he said: 'try to keep the legs a bit more straight' and for some reason it finally clicked!

It's a completely different feeling moving through the water doing it properly, and considerably faster. I'm SO delighted. Only thing was that I could really feel my hamstrings and glutes actually doing some work. And I could feel what the coach kept saying about your core/hips leading the rotation and not your arms. I can't believe I swam for years without knowing that. Can't wait until thursday to do it again!

Did a 'baby' brick today...tried out tri shorts on the bike for the first time.  Wasn't too bad, to be honest.  Running after the bike, though, really is not an enjoyable experience.

Need to get my into gear...my 20 week HIM plan was supposed to start on Monday and I sort of missed the boat by doing the open water swim with the tri group.  Am going to have to sit down with my schedule and tweak it to fit the group trainings I can do.

Yesterday would have been a lovely day for a trainer, but I don't have one. Both my bikes are out of commission at the moment, and husband didn't get home from work till after the gym was closed. Have to move it to Friday rest day. Bummer.

Today 1500m OWS and easy 4 mile run on schedule. Looking forward to the swim. I'm enjoying just swimming lately.

Nate: I'm following you on twitter now so I can learn the ways of awesome.

Happy training!

Finished work early and did a great bike trainer session (would have loved to bike outside but I had a phone conference I couldn't miss).

I've never been so excited about buying running shoes.  Based on our previous mentor group discussions, and on my own research I finally ordered a pair of Hoka Bondi B 2 Running Shoes.  They are a bit on the expensive side ($153 after 10% discount), and they are not very good looking IMO.  I'm very excited to try them on my longer runs.  My shoe count keeps growing, though nothing compared to Jason's collection.

Jim

Lots of good stuff going on here. Struggled through my bike intervals. So funny about training. I've come to realize training is just a series of accomplishments and dissappointments. I'll have a good week or two followed by a week of really struggling....today was one of those struggle days. I understand that its the normal process of the body adapting to training stress and coming back stronger but its still frustrating.

Jimmy-I love the Hokas. Feel so cushy and comfortable but don't notice any difference in responsiveness when doing hard intervals. I did my last 2 long track workouts in the Hokas. Hope you like them.

two things.....

I have made an executive decision that I am going to be somewhat faithful to a couple pair of shoes. I love my Saucony Kinvaras. I could run in them every day and be happy. They are cushy enough for a full marathon but light enough to run fast intervals. Even more importantly, my feet are always happy at the end of a run in them.

I am also going to continue to run long (14+ mile runs) in Hokas. They are so nice and really do help me in my long run recovery.

I am going to enter a 12 step program. No more buying a new pair of running shoes every month just because they intrigue me. Of course, I have so many different shoes that it will probably be a couple years of having lots of different shoes around.....

Randy, funny what you said about disappointments and triumphs. I was just going to post about what a great session I had on the trainer tonight. Held power numbers that I am really pleased with. Just a week ago I was thinking about giving up the whole tri thing and just becoming a runner because I was frustrated with my lack of (perceived) cycling/swimming progress.

I totally get the disappointment thing right now I feel like my training is horrible this week and I am trying to taper a little bit because of my race this weekend, but I feel like I haven't had a good session yet, especially my swim yesterday. I'm also exhausted because of an extra hour and a half at work on the early side which means my morning runs are really early for me. I guess one more run this week, probably tomorrow morning, an easy swim tomorrow evening and I'll pick my bike up from the LBS Thursday (just a tune) give it quick ride to make sure everything is good, and off on Friday or should I just do an easy short ride.

So, Day 1 of my 16 week training schedule is a major fail. Not that I had any control over this, but still, these are the kinds of things that keep me from training.

My daughter got very sick last night and she woke up roughly every hour screaming and crying. When i could finally get her to the Dr, she wasn't breathing out of her left lung. We did two emergency breathing treatments and steroids, which helped, but then her fever spiked. She sent us to the ER where I just spent the past 5 1/2 hours. They did more breathing treatments and some other tests and sent us on. She has been diagnosed with Reactive Airway Disease; aka the beginning stages of what seems to be asthma. Sigh.

Hopefully I can get on the trainer tomorrow.

Karla, hope your baby girl gets better real soon. Poor thing.

The lunch swim was pleasant. It was 95 F out, so the cool water felt so very nice. Still have my run to do.

Good night, all. Oh, BTW, my training buddy is up and learning to walk again. Saw a video of her taking her first steps. She can't use her right arm, and her right leg still lags a little, but she looked so determined, and it was great to see her smile, hear her sweet voice. She's gonna be alright.

Well I made it through my day. Did end up getting a bit sunburnt but not too bad. Skin 0.5, Sun 0.5. Swam 4000, Biked 6hrs and Ran 30min. The winds on the Queen K were something else. I'm a bit tired now. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. 3 easy days coming up.

Karla--really scary stuff.  I hope your daughter is more comfortable today.

Can I pick the brain of the doctors in the group?  I would sign a waiver absolving you of any wrong doing if I could.

You all know I fell on Sunday.  Most things are healing nicely, but the posterior shoulder is one giant pain. Pretty sure I hit my deltoid first based on the bruise and looking at my jacket, but it is the trap, teres, infraspinatus fascia area that really hurts.  I woke up at 3am in a lot of pain.  Every movement jarred that area.  The doctor did some arm movement tests--push my arms in, out, up and said things appeared fine.  Is there bone around this area that could have been affected and didn't show up right away? or is it likely a tendon or muscle that may have pulled away from the bone?  and does it even matter to the healing process?  and should I call the doctor back?  When I take Advil the pain goes from something sharp to something more constant and dull.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Karla-hope your daughter is better today and continues to improve. Always tough to see our children struggle.

Blanda-good news about your training partner. Progress!

Melissa-nice day of training. Have never been to Hawaii but everyone says it is beautiful.

Lunch swim and bike this evening before heading to my Daughter's school soccer banquet. Son gets home today from first year of college so lots going on.

Have a good day everyone.

Thank you everyone for the positive thoughts! She has some energy today, but still coughing a lot. We have another round of appointments today, yay us, lol!

Blanda - believe it or not, I'm from Guam too! Does my blonde hair and blue eyes give it away?! My sister and I were both born there, my parents taught for 15 years on the island. We lived in Barrigada Heights, and that's about all I remember

Oh Karla how scary!  Hope she feels better soon.  And if it is asthma as least you'll know what you're dealing with.  Not knowing is the scariest part!

I see another Hoka fan.......I'm going to Boston in June with plans to try (and probably buy) a pair at marathon sports

I've taking my "training" up a notch this week with doing some "two-workout" days.  Typically I've only concentrated on one discipline per day but I guess if I'ma gonna be a TRIchick, I better get used to doing both  Yesterday was swim in the AM and bike in the PM.  Today is run in the am and run again in the PM.  Tomorrow will be another swim/bike and Friday Swim only - Sunday is my big DUathlon debut!  Just hoping to finish in one piece

Ok enough rambling.  Have a good day all.

Wow, I’m gone for a few days and I have pages to catch up. This is an active group! Been busy but still getting the training in. I’m in one of those intermediate level training weeks coming off a hard week so I feel like I’m still recovering. Overall, the distances are trending longer for all three sports. I’m changing the order of this week’s schedule to give myself 2 days off prior to my final sprint tri this Sunday. I’m going to try to PR in all three legs. Jamie and Nate are my inspiration lately!

Regarding tri shorts, I use them for all my bricks and on short bike rides. I still like dedicated shorts for my longer rides. I’ll have to adjust things when my races distances get longer, I guess.

Jim – Keep us updated on the Hoka Bondi B 2 Running Shoes. I’m definitely interested in them, especially for the longer runs. I only have one pair of running shoes but I need to replace them (approaching 300 miles).

Karla- Sorry to hear that about your daughter. Good news is that it doesn’t have to slow her down once you get it under control. I have RAD (asthma) and most people don’t even know it. I have never used it as an excuse but just keep plodding on.

Blanda-Thank you for giving us an update on your training partner. Here’s to continued progress!

Melissa- So jealous! Hawaii is one of my favorite places and to be there to train would be like heaven. Have fun.

Suzy – If you continue to have pain, especially sharp pain, that is not improving, I would definitely get seen, preferably by an orthopedic surgeon who routinely sees trauma patients. Trauma inflicts energy to the body differently than the stress of standard sports related injuries and some sports specialists will miss injuries due to this. You may need a CT and/or an MRI to find certain injuries. That being said, most of these injuries just take time. You just don’t want to miss an injury that would be best served with surgery or specific physical therapy.

Have a good day everyone.

It sure doesn't! I'm glad we at least know what it is now. She is 3, so being this young and catching it early enough, I think we can control it from here.

Just finished up my scheduled workout which was a 60 minute run.  I'm seriously kicking myself in the arse for not keeping up some sort of consistent run schedule since I ran the marathon on March 9th (I literally have run 5 times since then).  60 minutes today, in 89 degree weather, pretty much sucked.  I had zero energy after 3 miles, so the final 25 minutes were more of a 'wog' (jog with a lot of walks thrown in).  The good news is that it can't get much worse than that!

Well the hospital bill just arrived from my hip fracture.  Just thought I would share this with everyone for a laugh.

The total billed was $92,535!  Now the network negotiated discount was just over $68,000 so the actual allowable bill was $24, 400.  The insurance paid almost $17,000 of it leaving me with a balance due of $7415.  However, I always carry an inexpensive accident plan with $7500 coverage.  (BTW - if you have a high deductible or large out of pocket exposure you should really consider an Accident plan...really cheap)  That plan has a $200 deductible.

So bottom line, I will have to pay $200 for this wonderful hospital stay, surgery etc.  I think I can afford that.

Do tell more about the Accident plan!  With whom do you have it?  Part of your major medication insurance or a rider of sorts with a completely different company?
