Expert 1608 Grapevine, Texas | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open Joe, sounds like you are doing well getting your run on! Sometimes it's nice not to have too many options. Funny on the exit intereviews...yes, a little honesty can be a shocking to some . When I left my last "corporate" job, I declined the HR exit interview. HR director was not exactly trustworthy, and I had already discussed everything that I wanted with the COO and CEO. Mitzi, the cardiologist stuff is (hopefully) just to get checked out. Having type 1 diabetes and entering...ahem...late 40's...it is indicated. Plus I have been unusually fatigued over the last few months after working out relatively lightly, so have been trying to figure that out. May just be that I'm not a spring chicken anymore! Oh, and one thing I wanted to mention...wearing a wetsuit in a chlorinated pool is supposedly not good for it, and might void any warranty you have on it...so might be good to read the fine print on the label. As for the scholarship nepotism, an early example for the young folks of how life is not fair, and yeah, merit/need sometimes don't even make the top ten list of criteria when it comes to scholarships or jobs. |

Extreme Veteran 1106 , Connecticut | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open Carol - I'm 53 and I have to say I just don't have the fight in me I used to have. I used to love "the burn", now not so much. Those who say age is only a number must be under 35. Hitting 50 blood pressure went up, weight won't come off, don't seem to have the endurance (for working out) that I used to. Still far better than if I didn't do all this. Diabetes is such a tough added factor. Hope they find something easy to address. Steve - it really is wrong to give all that to the kids who already have so many advantages - educated, middle-class parents who have exposed them to what sociologists would call social capital. A kid with slightly lower scores, but who got them without all the advantages deserves the support. Went to the park where my tri will be and rode the bike course. I love it, compared to Ct. RI is flat. Never used my lower gears. Felt great, but then when I changed and went to run my legs were like lead. Couldn't believe it. Usually my body holds out when my cardio fails. This time my legs totally gave out on me. Any tips? I know to use a lower gear with a higher cadence (but didn't feel like I was straining on the ride). What would give me the bigger bang - more running or more running off the bike? I'm going to try out my wetsuit tomorrow in a pool. I'll feel silly but I don't have anyone to do an OWS with. Carol - my suit is used from a rental company so they encourage me to try it out. I thought a pool would be harsh, but they said it was OK. Thanks for mentioning it. Do I rinse the suit out in the tub or hose it down? Anything else I should know? Mitzi |

Extreme Veteran 1106 , Connecticut | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open One more thing - the wetsuit isn't supposed to keep me dry, just not take in too much water right? |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open Mitzi -- yes the wet suit does not keep you dry. The bit of water that gets in actually keeps you warmer since it acts as a bit of a barrier between your skin & the suit. You shouldn't have gallons of water in teh suit however. If you do, then there's something wrong. I've done very little this week as my glute/hammy thing is acting up something fierce, and it freakin' hurts. I'll keep it slow/easy this weekend, and get going again next week leading into the race. Getting older stinks. |

Expert 1608 Grapevine, Texas | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open Mike, ugh, sorry to hear that your hammy has flared up. Can you tell if cycling aggravates it as well as running? Mitzi, I would rinse the wetsuit out/off after using it, whether in the pool or the lake. Ha, pretty much anything I don't rinse out after being in the lake here turns green. And agreed...getting older brings new challenges, some of which are "fixable", and some not so much. Spending lots of time w/ my 94 year old FIL makes me realize that. But as another friend put it, I plan to keep wigglin' as long as I can in whatever way works best . Speaking of which, off to take the dog to the park, and also plotting a trip to the pool at lunch. |

Veteran 421 Los Angeles | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open Hi, just a quick check in. I have been out of it this week. We're all sick and I am extra busy with work! Only 1 run so far. I also tweaked my back a bit. Maybe caused by stress. I have not had a chance to catch up on posts but we still seem to be nice and active. I'm excited for the races coming up! Been thinking a lot of Samantha! I was right where you were not long ago! Not sure if I'm gonna try to sneak in a run today. Back is just not feeling it. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open So Mitzi they call it a Brick when you do typically a bike and then a run. It is called that because it feels like you have bricks in your shoes. It is normal. If you do bricks you get used to it, though ti doesn't really make it go away completely. You will find that after the bike, when you are on the run that your leggs will loosen up after a mile or two and you will be fine on the run. One advantage of the tri bike is that your legs are not quite so bad off the bike. Ya aging not so fun. Have a cold here that really wiped me out yesterday. I ended up walking after jogging 1 10 min mile. It would be prudent to just go to bed after work, we see if good judgement prevails or no. |

Veteran 560 | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open So taper is going okay. The only real concern I have is that yesterday, wasn't doing anything particular, my left inside knee tweaked and it hasn't stopped hurting. I iced that night and didn't train at all. Today it still hurts just as bad and walking on it has moments when it hurts worse than other times. What do I do? Should I train tonight? |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open You have to take care of the leg. If walking causes pain, don't. If you can walk some without pain do some walking, like a mile or two. If biking is without pain you can do some of that consistent with your plan or less than your plan, do not pull up on the backstroke. If all you have is swimming that you can do, then you can get some of that in without pushing off the wall with that leg or just touch and swim off the wall. It is fine to go a day or two doing nothing, but you should get in something after that even if it is just 15 min swim. What did you do to tweek it? Was there a sharp pull or did it just develop an ache after the workout? At this point the main priority is being healthy and getting in a couple of hours of something a week even if it is lifting weights with your upper body only, core work or whatever, something to raise the HR some. Having weird pains is often part of healing during taper if you didn't do something specific to hurt it during a workout. |

Veteran 560 | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open I wasn't training. I was at work. I honestly don't remember doing anything specific. All the sudden I was in pain. I took the night off and did some icing and got rest. Today I'm wokrking and have been on my fee all day. It hurst consistently and certain movements make it worse. So tonight I'll see how it feels biking and swimming. Should I ride an easy 65 mile course tomorrow or a tough course? I think I know the answer. |

Veteran 560 | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open If I'm not supposed to feel any pain while biking, then biking is out for now. I was gonna go 15 miles, but it was hurting from the moment i got on the bike. Then when I was done and I had to twist my leg to get my foot out of the pedal it really hurt. So, next I will try swimming in the lake. Maybe the cold water will help. I wonder if running will be okay if walking isn't? I am gonna try to take the "trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding" approach to this knee problem. It is still too early to know if it will affect race day. So ice, rest, limited walking and swimming are on my list of things to do for the weekend. Besides stating how I am choosing to deal with this I don't know how to feel. Lake temp is up to 62.6...last year it was 58 on race day. Two more weeks to see what will happen. Mike - I trust you are still doing well in prep for the big day. Was glad to read that the hammie is not causing current problems and that you are taking it easy to avoid any more pain. Mitzi - age is a factor along with a million other things. You said it already, but just being out there means so much to your overall health. Carol - Heart murmur...is that new? Trusting you are well taken care of. Happy weekend to all other peeps. Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open If walking hurts.. no running. Jay can help you swim wihtout using your legs as he has been living there for a while (pull bouy if necessary). I would punt entirely on swimming biking or running for a few days at least until walking is painfree. I would probably not run at all for a week or maybe even until race day depending on how things feel. (Walking only if painfree for exercize) If I were to bike it would be on a trainer or stationary bike and I might use a non clipin shoe or pedal for now, but I wouldnt bike on it for probably a week or two unless things get better quickly. Swimming is your call though, and I would probably do it in a pool as putting the wetsuit on and off will irritate your leg. If it were me I would also start antiinflamatory OTC meds, but that would be your call. |

Expert 1608 Grapevine, Texas | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open Samantha, ((((((hugs))))))) for you and your knee. Praying that it resolves sooner rather than later. 'Till then, got any good books to read or movies to watch? Ice is your friend....or as you said, a nice cold lake. Even if you don't swim, maybe a nice wade out to waist deep or so? Take it easy and trust the One who made you. And not to worry on the heart murmur, cardiologist said it's probably nothing to worry about, but doing the stress echo just to be sure. Mitch, how did the filming go? We need to know when/where to watch for you on television! Mike, glad biking is not an aggravating factor for you. I may try a bit of that tomorrow as well. Hope your hammy feels better soon, but if not, please join Samantha on the couch watching movies or reading a good book. Steve, hope your cold is better! OK, so I drank the koolaide and bought a Nutribullet. Good friend of mine really likes hers and let me sample one of her green smoothies. It was surprisingly good, and even her non-fruit/veggie eating husband likes them. |

Extreme Veteran 1106 , Connecticut | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open Samantha - sending good thoughts your way. You spent years getting to where you are, not knowing anything about this stuff, I'd say baby that leg, I'd assume missing a workout or two won't make a difference at this point - but again, just going on gut here. Mike - love your attitude, always important to think about the narrative at the end. Steady rain today, and while I know that it might rain on race day and I should get used to it - I went onto the treadmill. Don't think it felt any easier than it did yesterday after the bike. I think I just do better in the gym. When I think I'm going too fast, I check and see that I'm doing 11:30 miles, so no not too fast. When I think I've had it I can look and see that I've only been at it 6 mins. and done .5 miles. Something about watching the distance increase keeps me going. Made sure I got some "rolling hills" in as that's how the real world works. On the treadmill I just put my head down and run "uphill". I know that on the road I start to walk. On the road it seems all to easy to just stop. I've got to find a way to make the time pass on the road. I know that is the opposite of most people. Hope everyone is doing well. Veteran 439 Dartmouth, Massachusetts | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open Good evening everyone. I don't have too much to report as I haven't trained since Wednesday. I worked a double on Thursday and another one tomorrow. My wife got her results back...bone chip in her ankle..everything she's read says cast it and out 4-6 weeks. She's trying to do without the cast but staying away from things for 4 weeks minimum. Anyone have any experience with this joyous injury? Samantha: I'm sorry to hear about your tweaked knee. There's no question prayers have already been sent your way for healing! I did do a lot of pull buoy work for a few months and you can get in a good workout. I noticed that the pull buoy forces you to maintain good balance as you swim. If you're getting stir crazy to do something...you could do a lot worse than doing a 30 minute swim with the buoy. BTW, I love Proverbs 3:5-6 Its the verse that I really try to live my life based upon! Mike: I'm sorry to hear about your hammy/glute again I know you'll be fine for the race; your perspective is spot on right now. Full disclosure: I just picked up a double shift for that day because I was thinking about competing in it! Now that I have to work...that goes out the window. That certainly wouldn't have been my smartest thing but its tough to remove the "no pain, no gain" mantra...even if you've learned some lessons of patience with recovery! Steve: Nice 1K pace....I'd take that time anytime compared to my tourtoise 27min debacle Mitch: Nice to see you checking in; I hope the back heals quickly. Mitzi: Thanks for the juicing tip. I asked my wife if she'd consider it and got shot down quickly. I do have an odd quesiton...do any of our ladies know where to find a large variety of swimsuits? My poor wife is trying to find a pair and with her body changes...can't find the right size I suspect she'll need it because she's going to have to swim while recovering from her injury. As Steve said, the brick experience is normal...the more you do it, the more you learn to deal with that feeling. Carol: I hope you are getting better again. You have a race to train for with your friend. You already know but if anything odd happens that you need insight on...feel free to PM me. I'll do my best to answer. Hope you all have a great weekend. Good night |

Ok, Mike's race is next weekend and Samantha is the next weekend, correct? Anyone else? Jay, yes I've got experience with a chip in the bone. When I was 19 and my body should have been at the prime of healing. It was in my foot, not the andle. No case but I was given crutches and told to use them - no weight on the foot. I didn't listen and I paid later. Nothing debilitalitating but I experienced aches for about 15 years at various times. Plz have your wife do absolutely everything that they tell her and maybe even more. Loved the discussion into how being old sucks. My scary age (Ladies, there was a Sex in the City episode about scary ages) was 40. The day after I turned 40, I realized that it was awesome!!!! Best thing I had ever done and I wished I could have lived my 30s as a 40 y.o. So my pea brain decided that 50 was be even more amazing. Er, not so much. Damn. Today was different and fun. Son had to be at the baseball field early so I planned to do some running while they were warming up. As we got near the school, we saw "Race in Progress" signs. Huh, what race? Then I found that it was a 5K in support of the school's girls volleyball team. Hubby wanted to join us but he only had crocs with him because his plan was to go to the pool. So I joined the race. Slight warmup and I got 3.5 miles today in. Not the 6 miles I wanted but it forced me to run harder and Lawsy, this race covered every hill multiple times while I would have skipped some of them if I was doing my own route. Glad the money was for a good cause. Mitzi, you talked about finding ways to keep your mind occupied on the road. I bargain with myself constantly. I saw "Well, I'm gonna run up this hill and then I can walk". Of course when I get up the hill, I don't want to walk then because I need to use the gravity and foot turnover then. Another hill, same deal. Rinse and repeat. Or I say I'll run for x min or x miles and then walk. Once I get to x spot, I say 5 more minutes, etc. Make up games for yourself. I practice calculating pace. Also (Steve cover your eyes or maybe close your eyes) I use music for training runs (one earbud only so I can hear traffic, etc.). I have it low but it's still motivating to me. In races, it's easy to get caught up with the other runners or the spectators and music isn't needed then. |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open Hey everyone! Just finished an easy 25 mile ride, and all is well. I did see a massage/PT person Thursday night, and it worked out nicely. Felt sore Friday AM, but as the day wore on, no issues, and zero this AM. Went and picked up my wetsuit at the tailors today. Yes, the tailors. Had to have the velcro neck tab sewn back on as it was coming off. will give it a good soak in the tub later and maybe try it on tomorrow and jump in the ocean, if I'm brave enough to deal with 59 degree water. Can't believe I'll be done with the race this time next week. I'm getting comfortable with the idea I need to ride conservatively if I'm going to avoid total misery on the run. Forecast is looking like mid/upper 70's, partly cloudy, no rain for next week. My swim wave goes off at 7:20, which is great. Last year I was nearly at the end and didn't get into the water until nearly 8 AM. Will go for an easy run tomorrow AM then a quick spin on the bike to work the legs out. The rest of the week will be easy efforts and I head out Friday afternoon for the race. |

Extreme Veteran 1106 , Connecticut | Subject: RE: Baowolf's Mentor Group- Open Mike you are sounding really ready! Swam for an hour today. Sooo slow. Timed 16 laps (400 yds) at 13:50. I can't believe that I will be the last one out of the water Thought about it, just swimming some more doesn't seem to be the secret. Tried faster turn over, then realized that knowing I am slow, I don't kick my legs much, almost drag them. Tried kicking harder and did 50 yds in 1:20. Whoopee, that would be a 2:40 for 100 yds. Feeling pretty scared. Mitzi |
