Read that yesterday. Seems they needed more officials on the course. If it's as blatant as it appeared I don't know how you miss that.
Medium intesity ride today with a short and light Trun afterwards.
What do you guys wear triathlon shoe (cycling) wise? Thinking sub $200.
Sockless for IM no problems!!
X2 I love these! |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Sorry to hear about the devastation in NJ, Michele. Cable and net are gone again, so all I have is my phone. Kids are home from school due to lack of power. I really hope this is sorted out soon. I have cheap cycling shoes, and I am shopping for new ones to purchase after the holidays. |

I made the mistake of trying to do barryp's running plan at the same time and ended up with a stress fracture. I would suggest keeping running volume and intensity at a minim if you are doing Jorge's plan. Just really focus on the bike. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Weatherman is calling for snow here, too. Trick or treating in the snow?? Yikes. Our holiday was rescheduled for the weekend. Kids are off school again today (4 days in a row) because power hasn't been restored in the schools. 2700 in the pool this morning with lots of all out 100s. I really struggled to maintain my form during these. My blood sugar felt extremely low, so I think it's time to start eating a banana on the drive over the gym on swim days. I lost 5 lbs. this month. After using a calorie formula from a book Karen gave me, and comparing that number with what I usually eat, I found that I wasn't eating enough by 500-700 calories (and that's to lose weight). For the last 4 weeks, I've tried to consume 2000-2400 calories a day in an effort to lose, and it worked! Prior to this experiment, I was eating 90% Paleo. I decided to toss that and add in more carbs. It's liberating to be able to eat pasta and not feel like it's a "bad" food. It was really eye opening for me to see how little I was eating at the end of the day. I am really going to focus on getting enough through my Ironman training. Most people have to log calories to make sure they're not eating too much. I need to log calories to make sure I'm eating enough. Edited by jarvy01 2012-11-02 7:37 AM |

Our TorT'ing was postponed for Monday night due to the hurricane as well. And they are preparing us for another nor'easter for mid next week. We still have people without power and we lost our entire shore - we don't need another storm. Kids are still out of school and school may be cancelled for next week as well. It will really suck making this up in June next year. Jen - what is the name of the book? I am really struggling and I think I gained your 5 pounds despite exercising and what I would consider 'eating right'. I would be interested in seeing if our library has the book so I can read it as well.

Extreme Veteran 863 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED What are everyone's thoughts regarding running the NYC marathon Sunday given the devastation from Sandy? I had mixed emotions until this morning when I heard that hotels are displacing people with no homes for people coming into the city for the marathon. Where are these people supposed to go? I think it is too early to have an extra 2 million people in the city when it is not functioning at full capacity, despite the extra $$ it will bring in. Thoughts? |

I have a freind who called me this moring and said"Your are a morally sound man what would you do?" I said i would defer NYC is a scary place right now and there is no reason for a marathon. He said he would take my advice and defer until next year. |

He said he would take my advice and defer until next year. Couldn't agree more. I can see the arguments pro and con. Personally I'd think taking first responders away from helping displaced victims to monitor a running race is silly, but the race does generate millions and millions of $$$ for the city which could be used right now. I too would defer. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED That is tough because of all that is going on ... it would bring in tons of money which could help people and it could bring a positive energy to an otherwise depressed place. While I have struggled with how I thought about this and if I was running it and trained all year ... I think it is just too soon to expect the city to respond to travelers when they can't even help their own. In the interest of the runners though, if they cancelled, runners would not be able to recoup their total costs. I don't think there is a win/win in this situation ... it is mostly lose/lose. If people do that race, it likely won't be the expereince, overall, that they will expect and the city will be hard pressed to support. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED The marathon won't have the support of many NYers, so how will this generate tons of revenue for the city? The hotels are booked with residents. I went down to Central Park to spectate and cheer on the marathoners when I lived in NYC (this was before I cared about running at all...just thought these people were amazing!), but there's no way I'd make it to the park if I lived there now. Good points in TT about the generators used for the marathon tents (could be used to power 400 homes). Don't know if that stat came from a valid source, but if it's true...yikes! If I were scheduled to run this, I would defer. If I were scheduled to volunteer, I'd volunteer elsewhere as a relief worker. |

Master 2151 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED First of all - Jen, glad the book had useful info. (maybe I should read it, I think I don't eat enough most days for the amount of training I do) I think they should have cancelled NYC as soon as they realized the devastation. I'm not there, and don't know anyone other than co-workers up there, but it sounds horrible. My company (transportation) is being asked by customers to fuel their vehicles, employees are begging to get fuel, we are probably going to have to hire security for our locations up there that have fuel deliveries scheduled. It's crazy and I feel so bad for everyone. Even in Cleveland, the hotel guy told us about all the residents trying to get rooms because people had no power. I don't know, I think they should have never said the marathon was going on as scheduled. They should have known better. Edited by karen26.2 2012-11-02 9:54 PM |

Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Tough race for me yesterday. The swim was brutal. 4' - 5' foot swells so it was tough to site the buoys and people were just getting tossed around. Swam 2 min faster than 2011 so I was happy. Heading out to the bike course I took a really hard turn and fell. I banged up both my knees -- the left knee has no skin and a nasty gouge and the right knee twisted and has road rash. I hopped on the bike and kept riding. Knees didn't bother me much until mile 80 but at that point my legs has completely swelled up and it hurt to pedal. I pretty much soft pedaled the last 30 miles. Got into T2 and I was a complete mess. Made the decision to go out to the run and see if I could actually run. While I was slow, running felt better than walking. Wasn't my fastest IM marathon but I still finished the race in 11:49. Once through the finish I got a wheel chair to the medical tent to clean up, ice and wrap my knees. The medical tent was packed, it was an unusually hot day and tons of people had heat issues and dehydration. |
