EvenOlder - 2009-05-21 11:21 AM Re: Justinfss "which plan to pick"
Man, it doesn't matter much.
Go read a few, and you'll see that it simply breaks down to:
swimming a couple of times a week for X minutes,
Bike a couple of times for X minutes,
run a couple of times for X minutes.

Some plans are focussed for more swim or bike or run based on your strength/weaknesses.

I'd suggest read em up, then make up your own based on YOUR schedule.  It helps to keep it simple, ie;
monday run
tuesday swim
wednesday off
thursday bike
friday swim
sat run
sun bike

and just keep track of time on bt.com!

see my blog for a simple example.

Exactly.

Consistency, actually getting the work done, is just as important as having a plan. Moreso really, assuiming the plan is sound. The plans on BT are all sound in my opinion.

dixrp - 2009-05-15 12:19 PM Does anybody here have a swim I pod? I am going to get one and just want to see if you liked yours!

I've had a SwiMP3 since 2005 and I got great use out of it. It really helped me get in the pool and do longer sets when I was first getting in to swimming. I've had to defend it's use some, as there are plenty of people who say it interferes with concentration on form etc.. I figure sitting at home not swimming interferes with my form more, so I used it.

I haven't used it in a while, but it's nice to have when I feel like something different.

The quality of the SwiMP3 is very good. I've had no issues with it. About the only complaint I have is it's not compatible with iTunes files. I'm sure there's a way to convert them but I haven't been that serious about it.

I checked out your plan Steve and I like it. I think we definately have similar goals, maybe we should meet somewhere in the middle for some joint training, I just google mapped it and we are only 2,919Km apart! So that would be somewhere in West Virginia?

Bad news here though is that my right knee is giving me a little pain, I might take it a little easier we will see how it developes.

I'm no tri coach, but I feel like a seasoned veteran with injuries. If you're feeling pain, definitely rest up. It's better to lose a week or two now than to lose the rest of your season later if the problem gets worse. I ran a 1/2 mary last year with tendonitis, and then lost the next 3 months after I finally went to get checked out by an ortho. My knee still isn't 100% because of the permanent damage I did.

I hope that's not what you have going on...so definitely rest easy, keep an eye on it, and listen to your body.

Well I finally made it out for a run today for the first time since my bike wreck nearly two weeks ago.  My knee has been getting better the last few days so I thought I would give it a try this evening.  I did a slow first mile at 9:40 with no problems to speak of so I picked it up and did 3 miles in 25:46 (8:35 pace).  I feel good, but I'll ice it down tonight to be safe.  I'm glad to be back at it!  First race this Saturday!

Glad to hear it! Injuries are no good at all, but they can be managed to minimize the impact they have on your season. Sounds like you're ready to get back to it!

on injuries, my knee has been bugging me for two days now...not much pain at all but it is their, and I am worried, should I go easy, keep at the same pace?

Never really dealt with an injury before.

Do you notice it more when you run or are you noticing it on the bike?

If it's on the run I would take a couple days off from running and ice it regularly but still continue with bike and swimming training as normal. Then you can test it in a couple of days with a short run and see how things feel.

If you are noticing it on the bike my biggest suggestion would be first of all shift down into a gear until you find one where you are not noticing the pain and maybe think about readjusting the saddle or possibly just going and getting fitted for the bike you're on.

The only good thing about an injury is that you usually can keep up with the swim training unless of course it's your shoulder that is injured. If your feeling this pain even when you swim I would say go get it checked out.

So I have seriously been lacking motivation since my race last week. The only thing training wise that I have done is swim. Any suggestions on how to get back into the swing of things? I even woke up early today to go for a run or a bike ride and I simply cannot drag myself out the door to do it...ugh

You need to get something or the radar in the short term. SOMA is too far out at this point to motivate you when you've just finished a big race.  Even if it's a 5K run, or maybe a cycling event like a century... get something going. I know it's probably tough out there in the summer months!

I understand exactly what you mean.  I think I have post HIM depression.  I raced today, and from the first step I knew I was in trouble.  It was as if I didn't care!  And that's just silly -- I'm a competitive spirit, this is a big deal race around here, and last year I won my age group -- lots of reasons to care.

So, starting tomorrow I'm going to make myself get back into a regimen.  Speedwork, tempo runs, LSD runs, the whole shooting match!  This is just foolishness, to let this slip away!!!

Except when you are in the ymca pool and a total hottie in a string bikini asks to join you in your lane.  Then she proceeds to casually do a backstroke, then crawl, and lazy modelling the whole time you're trying to stay focused and swim.
Just when you've managed just to stop sneaking looks, she wants to talk all about you and what good shape you're in and how fast you swim.

End result:
wasted swim session.
smile on my face all day.

See... that never happens at my pool. The best it gets is when the 80 year old ladies aren't wearing heavy amounts of Chanel #5 in the pool.

I logged more training today than I did in the entire second week of May. It's good to be back and not feel wiped out. I suppose the key is not to dwell on lost time. I had some flex weeks built in to my plan and I wasn't sure where I would use them. I guess now I know! Technically I'm still on track, just without as much wiggle room over the next few months.

How's everyone doing?

Bill, I just laughed extremely loud after that post.  I went swimming yesterday morning at 9am and there was an aquatics class going on.....due to the fact that the air had a higher concentration of Chanel #5 than it did oxygen, I was able to get in a 2000yd hypoxic swim. Should improve my swim speed out of the gate. That is so true of our pool.....hilarious!

Still dealing with the whole lack of motivation thing. I tried looking for some races and couldn't really find anything that thrilled me. Not a whole lot going on here in the summer months. I've got about one more week till my HIM plan starts up I think once it does I'll be okay. I'm hoping Next week will be better still coming off the holiday weeend mentality and I'm taveling this weekend so hopefully by Monday things will be better...

I haven't ever ventured into the "challenge" forum, but perhaps there's something going on in there that can catch your interest. I did participate in the orginal BT challenge back in 2005 (before there was a forum of course). Some smack talk between boys and girls about swim volume led to a throw down. Losers had to change avatars to swimsuit pics for a full month.

I still have nightmares about some of the speedo shots.

Yeah this doesn't happen at my pool, too bad because I think it would be a good motivator, usually it is the old guys wearing "brut" or "stetson", that swim in the medium lane instead of slow, due to some pride issues most likely, then procede to parade around naked in the change room/sauna/ showers for 30 minutes.

How's everyone doing?

Hey everyone - sorry I've been out of touch lately. Got back from Germany and work has been hot and heavy ever since. Not to mention the family life. Anyone that has kids I'd love to hear how you balance everything out. Last week my wife called me "selfish and addicted to working out" because I wanted to go swim at 0530. I thought I was sacrificing my own sleep time to work out when it least impacted the family. Am I wrong? Granted, my wife is a stay at home mom, so she's probably just slightly jealous of all the time I get away from everything, but still, I'd be happy if she didn't resent me for having a healthy "vice."

Anywho...I'm trying to stick to a BT Oly plan for my race in Aug. I surprised myself in an 8K race on May 16 (check the log...for me that was blazin). I'm still definitely a runner if compared to the other disciplines, but now that I'm back home I'm working on the other sports as much as I can. I recently noticed that I often prefer running just because it's easier for me. I definitely have to get over that.

I have a Marine Corps PFT tomorrow, and I'll be trying to set a new PR for the 3 mile run portion. I'll post it up tomorrow, win or lose. My goal is to be under 22 min.

My weight loss is going well - I'm around 196, compared to the 204 I was sporting when I signed up in this group. I'll be around more often now and get more active trying to inspire people. I appreciate all the support coming from this group - my wife could care less, so it's nice to have some folks to understand it all.

Cheers,
Jeff

JeepFleeb - 2009-05-28 7:11 PM Sorry I haven't checked in for a while.

I raced the CapTex olympic on Memorial Day and had an absolute blast.  Finished just a hair under 2:15 which was good enough for 4th in my age group and 32nd overall (out of ~1200).  But more importantly CapTex was chosen to host this year's ITU Pan American Cup!  It was crazy to watch Olympic hopefuls race the same course I had just done.

Click Here for the best of my pics.

So glad you did so well!!  CONGRATS!!!!

I LOVED seeing the pix -- thanks so much!!!  But... I'm really a novice at this, but the pictures of the bike looked like they were on top of each other.  In my last race there were lots and lots of penalties for not passing within 15 seconds, some drafting (although I didn't see any of that), etc.  Are the rules different for Olympic hopefuls, or was I just seeing the pix with them all bunched up?
