I usually run on a strength training day as long as its not leg day. I agree not to run on Plyometrics day too. I have worn my HRM for that, and the calorie burn and HR is the equivalent to about a 4 or 4.5 mile run for me.

I do all P90x workouts in the morning, and I usually run in the mornings too. Sometimes I run at lunch. I swim on Monday and Thursday evenings after work. That just seems to work with my schedule. There is enough recovery time between the morning and evening workouts too.

Good luck with your workouts!

Sorry for the triple post, gotta love the work internet connection.  Question about Ab Ripper:  Where should it hurt?  I was having discomfort in my lower back doing the exercises.  Is that normal your first time?

I'm doing the classic version and would like to include running and swimming.  Which days would be best to do both?  Strength training and running?  Cardio (plyo) and swimming?  Thanks for the help.

I have found that for me, lifting on my swimming days works the best. I swim in the AM and lift in the PM. I would recommend you try a few different configurations and see what works for you. When I was just running and Xing, I had no problem running on a PlyoX day - but I would NOT do speedwork on that day. With full SBR, you have to figure out how you personally react to the workouts and how you recover, and see how that effects your SBR workouts.

Totally normal, but an indication that you should be modifying a bit to take that pressure OFF your lower back. On the moves where you have both your feet and torso elevated, keep your hands on the floor behind you, helping to keep your torso propped up. On the moves where your torso is lying flat on the floor (e.g., scissors, leg raises, etc), place your flat hands (palms down) into your lower back / upper butt area to provide more support.

Also, be VERY conscious about keeping your abs strong throughout the movements, which will protect your lower back. Think about tightening up to prepare for someone punching you in the stomach, and hold that feeling. Once you feel yourself let go, you are done. Sit out the remainder of the reps for that particular exercise, then start again fresh for the next one.

Many folks need a few weeks to build up to the full 25 reps per exercise - don't feel badly stopping early! You will build up strength and will soon be nailing the entire workout. This one is HARD, especially if you don't have a lot of core strength going in. The other area you might feel sore is your hip flexors - they will also build up strength over time.

Sorry if I'm about to ask a question that has already been asked. I just don't want to read through all 19 pages of this

Is there any way at all of squeezing in P90X into Ironman training? I'm training for IMAZ right now. I did P90X last summer while training for the Chicago marathon. I liked it, and it did make me feel stronger, but IM training take up soooo much time!! Have any of you ever found a IM/P90X plan that works well together?

dieathlon,

Good Morning! I did not use P90x while IM training, but I have used it while 70.3 training. I actually did the strength workouts and skipped plyo, kenpo and yoga x. I did do a 45 min yoga class at the Y instead at lunch 1 or 2 times a week. I also tapered off legs and back toward the end but subbed out with total body x from P90x plus. It worked for me.

Good luck with the IM training!!

As you stated, IM training takes up soooo much time.  Not to mention the energy.  I didn't do any planned training when I was focused on p90x - I wanted to do all of it and complete the 90 days.

I think to incorporate the entire p90x program with IM training would be very difficult, if not detrimental to your IM training.  As Debbie mentioned to work the strength training components in your training in lieu of regular strength training makes sense.

Disclaimer: This is the opinion of an expert in nothing

Best of luck in your traiining and your IM!!!!

Just stumbled across this thread looking for a p90x discussion for triathlon training hah.

Thought I would share my own experiences with p90 and Mr. T as I like to call him.

Starting 2011 out I had never done any sort of real workout or exercise, I was 26 and while not fat or particularly unhealthy looking, I didnt feel strong and capable anymore.  Decided time for a change.  Found p90x and got the DVDs, started on valentines day, followed the plan and the nutrition guide as closely as I could.  Around mid-March my friend asked if I wanted to do a 10k mudrun with him to benefit MS...I agreed and continued to train.  We ended up winning our division and got a pretty sweet trophy!  Not to mention they raised over $450k for MS research which was pretty cool.  I finished off the p90x and was so pumped I needed a new challenge.....which is how I came to the decision to train and try for a triathlon :].

So its gone full circle, triathletes found p90x, and p90x'er found triathlons.  I will be keeping the yoga in 2x a week, and using various resistance days 2x a week while I train for my first sprint tri in October.

Great thread its awesome to see so many people enjoy those crazy workouts hah, I thought I was a bit off in the head.

Funny...I have a similar story. I have always dabbled with running and pretty much did the gym thing all through college but got tired of the gym thing after moving home and concentrating on my business/career...i didn't have time to go as much as i wanted...yada, yada. Well, I got about 30 lbs overweight and began to detest the appearance of myself in the mirror. 2 years ago I was on vaca and saw a P90X infomercial and I couldn't get the idea out of my head so I ordered it...it sat collecting dust for about 6 months until finally about 1 year ago I decided to go for it. I've now completed 2 rounds of P90X, 1 round of Insanity and started looking for a new challenge...so I've done a couple 10K mud runs (obstacle races) and a few traditional road 5K and 10Ks later I got bit by the Tri bug...well it's on now!

Just my 2 cents...I'm including some P90X+ strength workouts into my tri training plan and it's working pretty well so far. I'm basically just mixing in upper body+ and total body+ as well as xstretch and an occasional yoga with my s/b/r. I enjoy swapping the strength workouts with a classic X workout too like back and bi's. I'm training for my first sprint tri coming up in about 6 weeks or so and I'm still working on my fitness...I started at 225 lb and am now at 193 lb. I'm super stoked about my triathlon coming up! Good luck all with the X...it definitely works!

P90X2 preorders start tomorrow!  Putting in my order first thing in the morning.  Yipppeee.  Just saw a bunch of info about it and I think it will be much better, very different and much more advanced moves.  5 days per week.  Yoga only 1 hour.  More equipment needed: balance balls, med balls.  There's even a pull-up assist in place of the the chair (for peeps like me).

It'll also have 27 eating plans including vegetarian, vegan AND - paleo/gluten free.

I'm really getting tired of Tony's jokes in P90X although I still love the workouts.

The trailer I saw of it looked suicidal. Like Insanity90x on crack.

I'll be interested to see what you think of it.

I know a couple of the cast members, have seen many previews of the programs and quite frankly I think I'll like it a lot more.  Definitely more about quality and less about sheer # of reps.  I have several of the one on one workouts that are previews.  I like the preview but cannot stand how much Tony yaps in the one on one.  It's ridiculous!

It won't be delivered until late fall or early winter but I'm def. going to be posting vids as well as workouts reports.

EDIT: The first phase is flexible and can be anywhere from 3-6 weeks.  This is because the moves are more advanced and this flexibility will allow the moves to be mastered before moving on to the next phase.  I like this.

Nothing like "Christmas in September"!  Can't wait to get this by Christmas.  It looks great.

Thinking about purchasing X2.  How would I order through you?  Just order straight from your site?  Will it credit to you?

I've been through P90X classic about 3 times and it got me in shape for my first tri this summer.  I don't think I could have done it without.  I want to continue tri, but don't want to give up X.

Hey Hey!  I'm starting again today as well.  5:00 PM if I can get in that early.  Also have a new aquatic and fitness center opening in December here locally.  YeeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaaaaa!!  I will be able to swim in the off season!  Hope they also have spinners.

Okay you guys:  I just finished day 1 and it kicked my butt.  I made it through Chest and back, and even AB ripper.  However, I only did 11 mason twists before I just about lost the cookies.  Sitting here right now sipping a recovery drink.  Still feel sick.  Man!  Kind of surprised with all the s/b/r I have been doing this summer.  could just be the three weeks I've been taking easy since I ran a sprint.

Oh Well.  I know the routine.  In three weeks I will be bringing it again!  Temoniprince, Chasethe dog, Bring it today!
