On a different subject.......How many of you are members of a local tri club?  I recently joined one here on the Gulf Coast.  I think they have lots of active members but not sure how active the club is. I do 95% of my training alone so not really looking for training partners although it is nice to have folks to ride and run with-helps with the motivation.

They are doing something this week-an "Indoor Ironman".  You complete Ironman distances in each of the three sports over the course of the week and report in your daily progress.  Does not actually have to be done indoors since we have more tolerable temperatues than you artic dwellers.  Seems like a good idea to me and everyone that finishes gets a finishers t-shirt.  Given fact that I am not back to running I will look to complete swim and bike segments.   Thought some of you might be interested.  Good way to break up the winter training with some specific goals.  Of course, it could be adjusted to do olympic, HIM or other designated distances.

Weather looks good today. 65-70 with no rain.  Going to get a couple of hours in on the bike somewhere other than in my garage.  Have a good weekend everyone.

I thought 30 this morning was a heat wave.

We don't have a tri group in town. I joined a local running group a couple years ago for the group runs. The runs didn't start until 7 or 8 which was too late for me. I did go on a few of the 7am runs, but they usually didn't start on time and I hate waiting around.

Enjoy the great weather.

You know, I was thinking about joining one that just started up out of our local Trek store.  The cost is pretty high though and I am already on a training plan so I'm not really sure if it's worth it.  Something like 300-400 bucks.  I'm jealous of that weather....wish I didn't have to do my 1:45 on the bike in my living room today, but alas, that's what you get for living in the Northeast.

Lumber Dad - 2010-01-22 9:59 AM So how many hours a night do you sleep? I usually don't get to bed untill 10, and get up between 4:15 & 4:30 so about 6 1/2. Saturday & Sunday usually up by 5:00 - 5:30.

I try to get to bed by 10 also, but it's usually 10:30 and I'm up at 5:30-6.  It's about the same on the weekend, except in bed by 12, up by 8.  Sleeping through the night is another story.  I probably sleep through the night 50% of the time....and if it's a full moon forget it, up at least every other hour.

Runners World had a story about this a few months ago. Not sure if you caught that.
I didn't catch that article actually...do you remember which month? My girlfriend subscribes so I can get it from her.

I remember reading that article.  That young lady had some serious sleep/insomnia issues.

Local tri club I joined has dues of only $35/year.  I don't think they provide any gear other than maybe a tshirt.  I think they have a meeting every month at a local bar or restaurant and an annual party.  I figure for $35 I cant go wrong.

We have a small local tri club here. It's not been really active in the past but there are some new board members this year who are working to get training groups going so should be a good year. We're getting new tri kits which will be a vast improvement over the old ones that were sized waaaaayyy too small and were practically obscene. I love the Indoor Ironman idea!

There are a couple of local tri groups where I live.  One is one that I helped start.  A group of about 30 women.  the other is a much smaller group that I have done a couple of things with but am not a member.

Sorry I have been MIA the last couple of days..this was a big race weekend.

The races were all at the Pettit center in Milwaukee - it is the ice rink that the olympic speed skaters train at.  There is a 466 meter oval that goes around the track.

Saturday - 7:00 a.m. - half marathon (47.48 laps) - took 2nd place female -12th overall.

Followed that up at 1:00pm as part of a marathon relay team - the 4 of us had planned on splitting up the 95+ laps into 8 even segments - each of us run 2 segments. Worked great for the first 4 segments ...then the plan changed a little. 3 of us had run the half at 7:00  and dehydration/nutrition and exhaustion were setting in.  We finnished the rest with smaller segments and with an awesome anchor - ended up witha 2:54:00!!  Our team came in first in the mixed (co-ed) division.

Today - I volunteered at the marathon all day.

Crazy weekend! I am sure I have missed out on a lot so I will try to catch up this week

When I work days I try and be sleeping by 10 or 10:30 and up by 4 am if I am working out and 5:30 or 6 if I am not.

When I work nights I will try and work out after at 7 am and then go to sleep for 4 -5 hours or so.  Much harder to sleep when working nights.  I love to nap like the rest of you.  I can nap anywhere anytime usually.  They do not like it when I nap at work either but it helps.

Congrats on those finishes!!!  Sounds like a great time.  I am still trying to get my running up to speed...no pun intended.  I did an hour and twenty minutes today and ended up with giant blisters on both my arches from the orthodics.  I'm trying to protect the ones that didn't pop during the run, but it's painful to walk.  Any suggestions???

Wow that is a long run!  Blisters on your arches is one that I have not heard of.  Are your shoes tied too tight or too loose?  I know socks can be a big source of blisters.  I would ask the person who did the orthodics if they have a sock recommendation.  And protection wise I use blister pads..I can't rememeber who makes them but they work really well.

You could pop the blister with a sterilized needle to relieve the pressure. Then try the blister pads, I would think Walgreens would have something. For me I usally end up with calluses.

I popped the right one like you said...and it feels better.  Drained it and added neosporen to both right and left, but now my left foot has this sharp throb and it's pretty red.  Damn thing looks like the beginning of an infection.  No running until this thing goes away.

I also heard that ducktape works really well in preventing blisters.  Sound a bit funny, but I started to get these blisters a week ago or so and taped the arch of my foot and it helped a lot.  But I ran out of rocktape, so I'm thinking I better go back to that.

This quote helped me when I first started to run, when I was thinking I could never be a runner.

"If you run, you are a runner.  it doesn't matter how fast or how far.  It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years.  There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get.  You just run." - John Bingham

"If you run, you are a runner.  it doesn't matter how fast or how far.  It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years.  There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get.  You just run." - John Bingham

Very nice

Can't wait to get back to running.  I miss the physical challenge and the mental aspect as well.  Getting lost in your thoughts and the satisfaction of completing the run.

Went to the chiropractor today.  Still having significant right hip and leg pain.  Now I think it may be sciatic nerve/piriformis issue since it is more of a shooting pain from right buttock down leg.  Initially went to ortho for evaluation after injury appeared.  Still not "sold" on chiropractic treatment but consider it to be helpful much like physical therapy. The electrical stimulation and adjustment felt good.  Hopefully it will help.  Anyone else gone to a chiropractor?  Good/bad or otherwise experience???

I started seeing a chiro for the exact same reasons you are talking about.  The first chiro I saw did his best over 12 visits and nothing got better.  So I found another one.  I saw the new guy for 3 or four times...he gave me some yoga type stretches to do and as long as I do them at least once a day now, I have no real problems.  The main thing for me was stretching out my but and doing some hip flexor strength exercises.  Before this I couldn't even sleep.  Both my physical therapist and chiro diagnosed it as "most likely piriformis syndrome".  Sucks....big time.

Three of my close friends are chiropractors so I hate to say, but I am not really sold on it either...at least not to the extent some claim.  My rule is to not let them do anything that hurts.  I know some people feel different, but I know my body and my experience has been that when they do something that hurts nothing improves and sometimes things get worse or I have a new problem.  I had a neck injury from a car accident and started seeing a chiropractor, the adjustments hurt and I always had headaches afterwards.  I continued for several months, with many people telling me the headaches afterwards were normal.  I only got better with time after I stopped chiro treatment.

I prefer the activator for neck adjustments and ultrasound and electrical stimulation can be very helpful.

I believe if you listen to your body, you will know if a chiropractic treatment is helping.

Wednesday weigh-in......

194 this morning.

I think I have dialed in how many calories I need to be eating per day given my current workout load to gradually lose about a pound every couple weeks to get to my goal weight by race season.  We'll see if it works!
