fungi32 - 2010-05-04 4:36 AM Officially back from the race, went pretty well 5 minutes faster than last year at the same event so pretty pleased. I think in retrospect some of my issues 2 weeks ago were dehydration related but no issues this race quick little flip out in the run start for the swim then pretty smooth sailing. Going to take a couple days off regroup and then start official training for the 1/2.

Congratulations on a great race, Kip.  I checked your logs--very impressive times.  You rocked this event!

So I was going to consider scrathing the race on Sunday since my knee is hurting so much, but they allowed me to switch to the aquabike so I am going for it.  Hope the shoulder holds up and that the water is a forgiving temperature.

Couldn't just do nothing for my vacation, especially since this is the first race I signed up for.

Officially start my half training tomorrow, no real structured plan but will do what I can during week with work and long run swim and bike on weekends, I have looked at numerous plans and will set down this weekend and draft some rough plan but mostly just go by feel. Not worried about swim and bike but really need to focus on nutrition and the run. Ready to go looking forward to lots of help and support.

I ordered a bunch of gu today...can't get the vanilla gingerbread or mint chocolate at stores but they have them on line.  I was going to get some of their recovery brew but don't know anyone who has tried it to find out how well tolerated/liked it is.  So...not wanting to spend the money on something I might not like I bought a sampler package of stuff that has some of that recovery brew in it.

Bryan, that course is like IM WI condensed down into an olympic tri bike course.  Very tough bike course.  Nothing on the IM WI bike course like Observatory!

Planning on a 90' bike tonight, 4 mile run tomorrow, and maybe a swim or another bike on top of the 4-mile run.

Has anyone used dry land training for swimming?  Specifically resistance bands like these:

http://www.kiefer.com/ProductDetails/StyleMasterDetails.aspx?pid={3e36ef03-6aa1-4682-9e15-be2ea81261d1}&gid={0e9a158d-009d-479b-a4b9-2d343d9ad973}&GroupName=Resistance&pname=Kiefer+Dryland+PowerCords+w%2f+Paddles&Referer=&Alias=&ptct=SGR-SR&CTitle=&

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

I have used them in the past basically to mimic the motion of certain parts of the stroke and build up strength.  I never really saw any results but that was probably due to my lack of consistency with strength training.

I did see Andy Potts using them to warm up on the ferry ride out to Alcatraz Island this weekend.

I had a great first half-mary. 1:42:03 was my time. My race report is up if your interested in reading. My legs also feel like lead weights, but I still manage to get my workouts done for today.

Awesome job, Scotty!  That's a great time for your first!

Kip, I'm in the same boat as you!  I guess I officially just started my HIM training plan last week, except that I was also supposed to be recovering from my marathon.  So it worked out by me just cutting out all the runs from the HIM plan and just doing the swim & bike workouts.  And even then I scaled those back since I took a couple of days completely off and wanted to ease back into a workout routine.

I'm worried about nutrition for my HIM, too... But I'm actually more worried about the bike, since I know that what I do on the bike will definitely affect my run later on!  I'm thinking it might be better to go with liquid nutrition on the bike (I'm planning on trying infinit, heed, and whatever other brands people recommend) rather than gels + water since that seems like it'd be cumbersome on the bike unless I want to pull over.  For the run, I'll probably just use the gels I used for my marathon.  I think the next couple of long runs & rides will be chock full of experimentation with nutrition!

I will also be doing alot of experimenting. Starting with a bottle to mount on my tri bars

Having an aerobottle is the number one reason why I can't wait to get clip-on aerobars.  I'm waiting until after my HIM though - it's only six weeks away - way too close to be making such a major change.  I think I'm FINALLY comfortable enough on a bike to add them afterwards though.  Yay!

If you are comfortable in aero having the bottle is not a big deal.  you will have a lot less moving to stay aero to drink than getting up to grab the bottle and drink from the cage mounts.

I have the aerobottle, but never use it.  I keep forgetting to put it on.  I have set it out for my race though because at the very least there is still less movement to just dip you head for a sip rather than taking your hands off the bars.

When I had the bottle on the trainer inside I actually used to slobber with it.  Not as easy as you think to grab a drink and not dribble on yourself. The straw is kinda big.

BTW, found out the winds in Knoxville are only 5 mph, far lighter than the 30 mph from yesterday.

Oh yeh, I did try to get into the aero bars yesterday when I was in tree cover, but almost got thrown off the bike in those winds.  For those that are considering getting aero bars, give yourself plenty of time to get used to them.

I was actually just going to ask about aerobottles. Right now all I have is two cages mounted on the down tube. I find this to be more work to drink and find myself putting off the drinking a couple extra minutes if I can. So since it seems to be that a aerobottle makes it a little easier to drink from, what type is everybody using? Also I have clip on aero bars on a road bike. How does the aerobottle you have fit with the type of aero bars that you have?

Scotty, I have profile design aerobottles.  They slip in between the bars and have large rubber bands to hold them in place.  I'm tiniking about one of those permanently mounted things on the downtube that looks kind of like a urinal (yeah, it really does) and has a long straw ....

I also use the profile design bottles.  Depending on the space between your aerobars it will either slide in snugly or there is an adjustable bracket that you can to secure it.  I have to use the bracket.

I use a bottle horizontally mounted between my aero bars and one bottle off the back , which seems to work as far as volume.  I haven't been able to find any GU that works for me, my stomach just can't take it, so my nutrition will come from liquid too.  Although I'm pretty poor at planning ahead, so I haven't tried anything other than gatorade yet.

There was a thread in the general forum about special needs bags at IM.  Do HIM's have special needs bags?  I'm pretty clueless about most things triathlon related, but can someone explain what a special needs bag is and how on a 56 mile course i would ever get the bag if I needed it?  I figured I'd show my naivete here rather than embarass myself infront of the entire site.

I don't think most HIMs have a special needs bag, although I have never done an IM branded 70.3 so I can't speak to those.

The purpose of the special needs bag is hold stuff you may need on the bike but don't want to carry with you,  Most people will put in extra nutrition, spare tubes, maybe some clothing if the weather turns bad.  The downside of the bag is that you do have to stop access it.

I think on a 56 mile ride you can carry everything you need with you.  On a longer IM ride it is peace of mind to know you have that extra stuff that you can stop and get if needed.

Agreed.  I'm a slowpoke so 56 miles takes me 3.5 hours and I can still fit everything I need including hydration and nutrition on my teeny tiny 43 cm frame.  (Bottle cage, 2 bottle holder on the back, and bento box with tube, repair kit, co2, and nutrition.

I finally got one of those profile design E pouches that holds extra gu, bars etcetera....that way my pockets will be less crammed for my ride this weekend.  Last year the food offerings were blah along the century route so I wanted to be sure to pack some things I lile for an option.  Fig Newtons, chocolate chips....the power ade powder mix packets so I can mix up sonething along the way.....

*LOL*  I meant comfortable enough to finally get aerobars.  Agreed that once I have them, the aerobottle will be easier than the cages.
