25 mph headwind and near death experiences are def not my faves. Even a Slayer avoids those sort of things....

as I learned some time ago, some strong triathletes and coaches on BT are not real big fans of longer bricks but they seem to give me confidence and a better idea of what I can accomplish on race day in terms of pacing for the run. That algebraic equation (how fast can I go on the bike to still have a good run?) is so hard to figure out the best times you can get on the day.

By swimming a lot of yards, I really try to make the swim a grand warm up to the other 2 sports. However, at gulf coast HIM last year, the gulf threw me around like a rag doll, and I think contributed to me having a worse day than I am used to having becuase I worked so hard for 45 minutes in the swim.

rest day for me... (BORING!!)
but feels like i need it!
halfway through my run yesterday (8 hill repeats) i found my neck to be SUPER stiff (which has never happened!)
i was still paying attention to keeping my head looking up & forward to the crest of the hill
but i'm CONVINCED it's from running around town staring at my FEET for the last few days!!
but ah well.
it'll work itself out.

& i did go and try on a few pairs of shoes.
interesting stuff!
quite a different fit from running shoes, eh??
all of the shoes were LG (2 womens, 1 mens) & the first pair felt amazing-- until the guy told me the fit should feel slightly more snug than a running shoe
(is that really true!?)
so i didn't buy a pair (which works-- since i'd like to try out as many as possible), but it was definitely worth the trip!
LOTS to learn....

& i got my workouts in too:
Mon: spin & swim
Tues: run (5k)
Wed: run & swim

Thurs: rest (a dreaded quarterly meeting is set to stretch out into the evening YET again...)-- REALLY wish i could bail on this one!!!

Fri: spin
Sat: yoga
Sun: long run

Another question, does anyone listen to tri/sports related podcasts and would you reccomend any of them? I've been listening to a few lately and they vary widely in their quality and appeal.

Kate - my favorite podcast is "Radiolab". Check out this episode as it has a great piece related to Triathlon  http://www.radiolab.org/2010/apr/05/

I love listening to all their podcasts - they are a nice mix of science and social explorations.

YA-- just kidding. answered that one myself (they just carry specialized)
too bad!
i like places where they stock a bunch of different brands.
so, i'm going to one of THOSE places at lunch!
(excited)

anyone have any words of advice on cycling/tri shoe fit?
any warning signs to look out for when a shoe is on your foot??
(i.e. any places where they SHOULDN'T feel tight, etc?)

Gears has more than one brand - I remember seeing Specialized and Shimano... and I maybe Pearl Izumi and LG.... Its an ok selection but not overwhelming. If your driving that far maybe go an extra 10km to the oakville Cyclepath - they also have a good selection.

I'm assuming you already checked out D'Ornellas bike store in Scraborough? That's where I got my first tri bike / cycling shoes. There is also Impala Bikes in Whitby/Oshawa. It has an OK selection from what I remember.

swimming does seem to make for an ideal break in the week.
as brutal as the session was last night, i REALLY enjoyed it.

& nope! i haven't been into d'ornellas recently, but it's on the to-do list.
i just got back in from enduro sport & so far i've got a clear leader in the shoe hunt:
SO comfy.
they had a couple of pairs of the mouldable bonts, but they just didn't fit my feet in the same way--- wasn't enough to convince me that they could mould to my feet
(my toes were in trouble in there)

interesting stuff though!
so far i've tried: LG, bont, time, shimano
possibly just specialized is left before i can ultimately make a decision??
but it's nice to have a frontrunner in the search!

Mark-thanks for the podcast link. that is a def on my list of things to do. the oI flder i get the less focus i have but i still can somehow listen to tri stuff.

Peter- well done getting to the pool!

Nicruns-The shoes look smokin! You probably pick up some speed just from looking phast! and good workouts lately.

I forgot to give shout outs to nerdjock for that brick and to tri4fun73 for a good run. You guys are all making me feel like a slacker if I don't do two a days 8)

How about some run shoes discussion? I am racing in the zoots. Train in some kayanos for foot sore days and new balance 905s for daily wear. I had a great transition time improvement on those laceless zoots though. I think they are the bomb, light as heck, but a bit pricey. i use the superfeet insert in the new balance and kayanos but not the racing shoes. interested in your shoes, like rex ryan i suppose...

i've been tempted to try some zoots-- especially when they start selling them off at the end of the year...
interesting!

i'm all over the place shoe-wise & not loyal to one brand over & above another!
i was running in saucony hurricanes...
then switched to asics 2130 (b/c of a sale)
& generally speaking i alternate either the hurricanes or the 2130s with my 1130s (which have a better tread than the 2130s for winter running)

random aside: has anyone bought anything from chain reaction cycles?? i'm liking some of their prices (compared to what's at the LSB-- it would save me nearly $100 on the shoes ALONE!)
the cynic in me is just generally wary of online stores....

i had my first pair 2 + years and can still use them . the cleats wear out sooner (every year or less)

i like the rotation of running shoes idea. i do that alot.

oh yeah: nothing bad on the online shopping here. i bought some bits and bobs from them and there was no problem.

I've used mine for years and they're great, though, like Harvey said, you will have to replace the cleats periodically.

Cycling shoes last a lot longer than running shoes.

My advise for the shoe is to make sure it fits the pedal/cleat you plan to use. The Shimano shoe won't work with 2 hole cleats. The cycling shoes should also be snug so when you pull up your foot doesn't leave the sole.

Ran 5.87 miles this afternoon and then rode the trainer for 30 minutes.  Tomorrow it's back to the pool and an afternoon run.  Thus far, this is my best training week in a long time!

Today was tough. My 40min run was fine (7.5km) but I had wicked calf cramps on the swim. During my least rep of a LOCO set (3x500m) my calf just went rock hard and I had to doggy paddle to the edge and limp to the showers. 500m of swimming not completed.Cry
Thinking back I realize that I probably drank far too little water today. Lesson learned.

Though decision for tomorrow. Considering a long bike ride on my new road bike vs. resting a little for the big 5k challenge on Sat. the weather looks decent for tomorrow but is going to be bad for the following few days.

Damn Mark! I hate them. I get them in my feet or the lower inner thigh when swimming some times. Lot has been written about cramping but I am sure dehydration can't help. Hope you can avoid it happening again.

Peter: You basically have to ask yourself how important the 5k is. If its worth tabling an outdoor bike ride when the weather is going to be bad for a few days, then table the bike ride. You have been talking about the 5k since we all met you. I'd hate to see you go in there with hamhocks for legs then feel disappointed. To me, I'd lean towards to doing well at the 5k with fresher legs, but no pressure on you either way.

For my job, I have to go to court alot as an expert witness. Today is one of those days. The pay is good but the timing is awful. I had to skip my morning workouts (swim and strength) and now, if I am lucky, hope to get some of it back if they let me out early enough in the afternoon. Good problem to have I suppose but I'd rather be training like y'all!

Catch me up on how you are doing, what's coming up, and how you are feeling lately. Drink plenty of whatever makes you happy (water, Mark!) and lets slay this weekend!

hmm....
i assumed that the shimano shoe would fit well with the ultegra pedals...
(i HOPE i'm not wrong...)
& yet it wouldn't surprise me if i was-- since i tend to do that a LOT!  Tongue out

hydration is a tricky thing....
lately, i've been trying to get 1.5-2.0L of water in me while i'm at work.

then, i just sort of replenish as necessary as i workout....

i used to get wicked headaches-- since typucally at work i used to JUST have coffee.
but since i made a bit of a switch, i've been OK.

& i'm glad to be back at it today!

survived last night's f'n useless 2hr meeting & am back at it today.

spin class planned at lunch
