The other day someone commented on how missing a workout puts them in a bad mood.  I have to agree and vent for a moment.

I'm lucky enough to work on a military base where the civilians are allowed access to the workout facilities.  This is usually a great deal.  The gym is world class, and free access to a pool is something that most of you would probably die for.

But along with the benefits come circumstances like today's fun and games.

Someone in security got the grand idea of having an exercise involving a bomb threat at the gym.  I was 10 laps into my workout when we were rushed outside into the 40F weather to stand around (wrapped in a towel since there was an "imminent danger") while they pretended to look for a device that everyone knows does not exist.  Even the dogs were confused.

Eventually they let us back in to change clothes... which begs the question:  If it's okay to enter the building to change... isn't it safe to resume my workout?  Apparently not.

Anyhoo... I guess the answer is that I can get quite upset when I can't get my full workout in.

Thanks for putting up with my rant.  Please return to your lives.

Standing outside wrapped in a towel when it's 40 degrees would pizz me off royally too!!

What does the military like doing, mess with your heads??  (guess that's a yes.....my brother is retired ARMY.  his daughter was recently stationed at Ft Lee which is just a few miles from where I live and she told me some of the nonsense they pulled.....she went to the packer training for parachute packing is now at Stewart or Benning, I forget which)

ack, we're off the front page!  I'll fix that...

Did a swim practice again (Masters...more like swimming with the professional kids!) yesterday, had to get out after 4 x 800's, the goal was 5, was holding about 13 mins on each.  The boys were doing them on 10 and the girls on 11, but I dunno if they were holding that.

I got out early to watch IBM's Watson on Jeopardy though!  He dominated yesterday.  Scary...

Really need to get my bike back together, feel like I haven't rode in forever.  I even bought a trainer before Christmas I haven't used!

Little trick for the trainer.  If you have a smooth lever to remove wheel you can just open it all the way there should be a better spot to grab the wheel.

Dud is the expert on rollers.  I have attempted them and not done well.....now with my gastrocs I am really afraid to try again!  Start in a door frame or something to hang onto....keep your cadence up!!

He has a video here on the site for the rollers.....I'll check the articles later for the link

Lee - I'm jealous!  I want rollers!  I ordered a set from Nashbar but they ended up getting back-ordered until the end of April so I told them to cancel it as by then, I expect to be outside all the time anyway.  Good luck with them!

So, I just signed up for a coached power-based cycling class that runs for 12 weeks starting the second week of March.  It sounds like an awesome class and exactly what I need to get stronger, but I'm now starting to worry how the rest of my training will fit around it.  I manage to make my tri training fit my schedule by not training on the bike except for occasional long rides on the weekends.  Now I've got a cycling class twice during the week and once on the weekends to work around!  It's going to be a challenging 12 weeks, for sure.

Sounds like a great class!  Others I know who have done classes like this have sufficiently had their tails handed to them!!

Kinda like Jorge's winter training plan only harder!!

That sounds great Catherine! I can sympathise with the scheduling issues, my guess would be do let go one of your run sessions if you find you don't have enough time for all of it as the power based class is sure to work the legs plenty anyhow, but I will let our esteemed mentors impart their greater knowledge on that one Good luck!

If you have to double up do the swim and run on the same day.  Let your legs have the bike class to themselves.  See the articles in this month or last months performance articles.....hang on I'll get the link....
Sorry, this was in the USATriathlon magazine which I have to hunt the reference for

Yeah, that makes sense.  Easy enough to do for the most part too as I can run at lunch and then swim after work.  I just have to make sure I have the time at work to take a full lunch!

Just wondering on everyone's thoughts on heart rate monitors and whether they really are useful. I keep reading about the benefits of using them to train in the optimal zone, does anyone here use them? How about you flying zebra? (sorry just wanted to use the nick name )

HR training is useful when done right.  To have the HRM and "just want to know" what the numbers are is a waste of your money.....but if you can get your target zones you will train much more effectively.

Okay, your comment did make me smile, a little.

I have three but always forget to put them on.  I use it on the rollers or trainer to get the rate up.

Things may be looking up.

My awesome PT tried some accupressure techniques tonight which really brought some relief to my legs.  He's letting me ride 45 minutes easy effort outside this weekend too.  I wasn

I wasn't sure that was going to be happening the way the legs felt last night.

Plus, his office is next door to a Japanese restaurant so I just filled up on fresh sushi for dinner.  Cool

Dud has his marathon this weekend.  Anyone else racing?

I will be outdoors on my bike, per my PT's instructions short and easy effort rides.....But it is better than no rides.

Great that you get to ride again, Judi!  I hope it goes well for you.

Tomorrow I'll be out on my tri bike again.  It'll be our first dry day since last week sometime and I need to do some experimentation to see where my lack of speed/power problem is coming from...  We've picked out a 30 mile route with some good rolling hills and I'm looking forward to it.

Sunday will be my longest run yet - 7 miles.

I may try and work a swim in on one day as well, but we've got a ton of work to do around the house to get it on the market ASAP.

TGIF though...big time.

Good Luck in the Marathon Dud!

Training plans are not going to involve too much tri for me, we're going to get in a J-22 and practice on Sat and Sunday since we're going to Cayman to sail next month.  Hope to do some running this afternoon.  Got some rotary service Saturday as well, so doubt any real exercise will squeeze in, maybe Sunday if I can!

Happy training to everyone else too!

I know I've been nonexistent on the thread but I have been keeping tabs on everyone.

Great news Judy!  You know we're all wishing good things for you.

Dud, good luck on the marathon.

I can't wait until I live somewhere where I don't have to wait months on end to race.

Three day weekend plans: swim today and fun with the family, 5 hr bike ride tomorrow, bike and run on monday.
