Deb - great job in your race!  Glad you and your little one had such a great time!

Nick - I've been carrying a spare tube and a CO2 cartridge with me on my rides, but still haven't had the occasion to use them.  And I still need to practice so I don't need to change one for the first time on a ride.

This past week I missed two workouts.  I had a crazy busy week with work.  I missed a workout on Thursday because I was too busy at work and then I missed one on Saturday because my wife needed a sanity break.  So, I ended up shorting myself a 16 mile bike and a 10 mile run.  I was really beating myself up over it and was very upset both days about it.  I think I'm over it.  I think I need to come to grips with the fact that with 2 kids and a wife that would like me to spend time with them and a busy job during the week, I will miss an occasional workout.  I think 2 runs/ 2 bikes/ 2 swims is a good minimum # of workouts and hopefully I'll get my 3/3/2 + strength workout if I have enough time for it all.  Just needed to put this in writing.  I need to start believing this.

I think I'm going to pick up a canister of Vitoria pit stop, it is supposed to seal and inflate a tire to 90psi, so it would be the ultimate quick fix for a flat.

http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/reviews/Vittoria-Pit-Stop.shtml

I put my new tires on the bike last night so hopefully they will keep me from getting flats.  Now I just need to remember to go pick up a new battery for my cycling computer.

The weather is consipiring against me. On Wednesdays the kayak club I am part of paddles around the bay. Its very informal and I figured a perfect time to don my wet suit and get some open water swim time in. Last week the temperature dropped and it was windy so no one went out. Today is was really hot out all day and only when I left home to head to the club did the sky turn black, the wind picked up and it started to pour rain with thunder and lightning. Very frustrating. I NEED to get an OWS swim in. My first ever tri is coming quickly and includes a 2km swim. The biking (55km) and Run (13km) are fine its the swim Im really worried about.

Grrrrrr.

P.s. Of course now that I am home it has stopped raining.

Hey guys,

Sorry I haven't been around. I am in this trial this week and it is taking up all my time and energy, I am not made to work 12+ hours a day. Definitely appears to be a rest week for me, which frankly I probably could use. I started the week with high hopes of lunch time runs and bike commuting but that was wishful thinking.

Deb, congrats on your race, that is a fast time for a 5k in a triathlon, that must have been awesome.

Dave, you are right man, you need to get in the water. You still got some time though. Have you tried out the wetsuit in a pool yet, sure to get some stares but not entirely uncommon.

Darren, good luck with you work this week, we've all been there and long days aren't fun.

How's everyones week going so far?  I for one am very happy it's Friday.  My training this week has gone pretty well, my bike ride earlier this week kind of sucked but besides that I can't complain.  I had a really good short run yesterday and averaged less than 8 minute miles.

good job on the run yesterday nik. I have gotten out 3 times this week for runs. Two of those only about 40 min but i did it in the hills and tried to go at about a 10k effort so that was good. Proud of myself for getting the short workouts in because there was definitly a time where if i could not do what i planned I would just forget about the whole thing.

This weekend is camping for me. Heading to the mountains so hoping to get some early morning hilly trail running in. Though after this week, which includes me coming in today instead of heading out to the mountains this morning grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, we will see. But going out there and not running is kinda like going to a movie and not having popcorn.

Bad week - skipped a few workouts and now feeling iffy about my first ever Tri with an OWS.  At least I got my wetsuit in the water on Tuesday.  Work has been awful - several 11 hours days in a row.

Out the door now for an easy run.  Supposed to rest tomorrow - but I missed a few workouts - maybe an easy bike to make sure everything is working?

Please send me an inspire if you have a minute.

I would put in a short light bike just to make sure the bike is fine but dont try to make up for those lost sessions. Really nothing you would be doing in the week before was going to have much of an impact anyways. If anything being well rested could work out well for your race.

Awesome day / tough day.

It was nice day and a little cool so I decide to bike into work. I beat my previous times and logged the 79km ride in 2:25 averaging almost 33km/hr (20mph). Its quick for me and I was feeling great! I think I can still cut that time down a little.

The ride home wasnt so great, I hit something going through road construction got a flat, might have warped a wheel, it started raining, then I had a car pull out on me almost side swiping me. It was a tough ride, I knew they would happen so I tried to keep positive and keep going. 86km, took 3hours and average speed dropped to 28km/h, but I made it home.

This has been a rough week for me at work, so as a result I've missed a couple of planned workouts.  It was supposed to be a low volume week anyway and I was getting pretty burned out last week, so I think the extra rest will actually do me some good.

Last weekend I got to try my wetsuit for the first time in my local OWS beach.  It was great being in the water with a wetsuit on.  I stayed plenty warm.  A couple of years ago I used to swim at that same beach early season without a wetsuit and would absolutely freeze.  This was a nice change.  I wasn't a big fan of the way they laid out the swimming area though.  They took away the usual 100 yard lap area for OWS practice and I was stuck swimming in a 25 yard long area closer to the beach.

As far as this weekend is concerned, I plan on doing an 8 mile run tomorrow morning, a swim tomorrow afternoon and a 22 mile bike on sunday.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Ben - inspire sent!

It seems like this has been a tough work week for everyone.  You'll do great in your race!  I don't think an easy bike would hurt anything.  It would get your blood flowing, get your head in the right space and as long as it's nice and easy, why not?

DaveL Sounds like a great day!

I forgot to check the weather all week - it's gonna rain all weekend .

I need to try biking in the rain today. Not really sure if I should bother dressing to try to  stay dry - or just dress to stay warm, so I'll have to do some experiments.  Thoughts?  The temp hi is only in the mid 60's and tomorrow 10 degrees warmer.  I guess I should be out there now and see how it feels.  WFH means the office is always there!

How do you deal with rain during the race? I'm thinking of using super jumbo zip locks for the transition area.

staying dry is going to be nearly impossible, I would just dress a little warmer. Becareful and try to choose a lightly traveled road.

for rain during a race I will use dry bags because I have them but big zip locks or even a larger plastic bag with the top rolled down would work as well.

Heck yeah I finished!  Reviewing my times, I did a good run, a decent swim, a slow bike, and wicked slow transitions.Laughing

my report was here:

So, my weekend didn't exactly go as planned.  I got my swim in on Saturday, but not the planned run.  So Sunday turned into my first brick workout.  A 22 mile bike followed by a 6 mile run.  It actually went very well.  I ended up only missing one workout for the week - a 16 mile bike.

Today, I got my tire changing practice in.  It was a lot easier than I thought.  A little time consuming, but not that bad.  I'm glad I got the practice in before my first race.  I'm a big fan of the CO2 cartridge!  It takes no time at all to fill the tire.  I then got a nice 24 mile ride in.

After my ride I took my bike to the bike shop to have the rear derailer looked at.  It has been having a mind of it's own and not shifting when or how I want it too.  Apparently, I knocked it out of whack one of the times I fell over on my first ride!  Oops!  All fixed now.

This week begins to ramp up the mileage again after a rest week.  My first race in a week and a half!

My week has been alright, the weather has been terrific so I've really enjoyed getting outside for my bike and run.

Some day soon I need to take my bike in to get a tune up, it's working fairly well but I think the derailer is a little off and I have a rear tire that isn't quite straight.

How is everyone's week going?  Anyone racing this weekend?
