If you Goggle "shrink picture" there should be some free sites that will shrink the cyber size of it for you...Save it as the smaller size and try uploading it again. You could also try opening it up in the Paint program ( probably in Accessories on you computer if you are using Windows), and you could try cropping it a bit and saving it that way to try again. It's weird how BT will take some pics and not others, all from the same camera?? |

Thanks for the suggestions, Hilde! And Suzie, I'm SO jealous of the beautiful weather you have in Australia!! I'd love to go for a run wearing shorts and a t-shirt right now! |

Expert 972 Falls Church | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! erinrockrun - 2012-01-05 4:34 PM OK, I really need to share this with all of you. The other day on the Runner's World website, there was a workout video entitled "Iron Strength." It is about a 20 minute workout with varying plyometric exercsies and a little strength training. You can do it all in the comfort of your own home. I decided to give it a go yesterday morning before class. Here's what happened: 30 seconds into it I was already out of breath and sweating. The first exercise was 6-8 sets of 15 plyometric squats. They KILLED me. I made it through most of the workout. I didn't have dumbbells, so the few moves that required them I just improvised. Afterwards, I went to take my dog outside. I found that my legs could not transport me down the stairs. And today is worse. I dread going to the bathroom because it hurts getting up from the toilet! I don't recall ever being this sore. I hope to incorporate this into my workout regime. It was created by a marathoner/triathlete and I guarantee you will get fantastic results! Here's a link to the video. Let me know if you try it:-) http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-263-266-14177-0,00.html Holy Cow Batman!!! This is an intense workout. I will have to give this a try. I'm actually surprised he recommends as many sets as he does to start! My first try will be at about 3 sets of each exercise - not the recommended 5. 5 sets of lunges alone will leave me with a sore butt! Are you more sore today than yesterday? |

Veteran 222 Southern Maryland | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! The first time I worked out with a personal trainer, I felt like that. Had to crawl up the stairs to take a shower when I got home. I was sore for a week. A friend of mine who's a body builder recommends L-glutamine powder. I've found it does help with the soreness the next few days after a workout like that. Hope you're moving better today! |

I was wondering what the group opinion is on temperature that you would swim at without a wetsuit. I'm looking at a short swim Sprint (1/4mile) that will be pretty cold. Where do you draw the line and need a wetsuit?

Melanie, I am still at an 11 on the one to ten scale of soreness. I think you are definitely onto something by suggesting less sets for each exercise. I'll probably give it another shot Sunday. Suzie- that pic makes me wistful for summer! Btw, you had asked me if I count drills in my total swim yardage. I sometimes have been, but not too sure. Maybe one of the experienced swimmers can help us figure that out. And speaking of experienced swimmers, here's a question. I occasionally get severe foot cramps in my longer swims. They are horribly painful and I have to stop immediately. I read that it could be from keeping your foot unrelaxed in plantar-flex position, but I have been concentrating on staying relaxed and no improvement. It's happened several times now, and it is starting to affect my swim because I worry about it constantly. Any ideas on what I can do to avoid it? |

Expert 683 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Dang! After that review, I'm scared to look at the video! But I'd second the suggestion of fewer sets to start with-- then build up to however many you can or want to. Being able to move is still desirable, after all... hope you feel tons better soon! (Oh, and green tea, tart cherry juice, and fresh pineapple are all natural anti-inflammatories, in case that helps-- my hamstrings are currently tight enough to use as banjo strings courtesy of a 100+ RPM spin session yesterday, so I sympathize...) BEAUTIFUL day here-- not nearly as gorgeous as Melbourne in the summer, Suzie, but lovely nonetheless. Hope everyone's enjoying their Fridays! Alex |

It's happened several times now, and it is starting to affect my swim because I worry about it constantly. Any ideas on what I can do to avoid it? Ouch! I've had this problem, too. There are a number of things that could be the cause, many of which have nothing to do with what you're doing in the pool. Mine are worse when I swim after cycling. Back when I cycled in mountain bike shoes, it was MUCH worse; when I switched to stiffer road bike shoes, it improved 90%. I have no idea why, just thought I'd throw that out there; see if there are any patterns related to what your feet are doing before you swim. Do you wear heels to work? Maybe do some calf stretches before swimming or roll the arch of your foot on a foam roller or something similar?
In other news, I decided just this week to do a 10K tomorrow. I need a little speed tune-up before next week's HM. I PR'd this HM last year, but I'm not feeling quite so speedy this year. I figure a 10K will help kick things into high gear- wish me luck! |

Expert 1618 Temple, TX | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Wow, nothing like a spur of the moment 10K Tammy Turtle... ha ha, I KNOW you are ready for it though and you'll probably bring home the bling too! Foot cramps while swimming... hmmm. I've had some of that, I usually try not to kick and ride them out if I can. Pretty painful, but once they stop cramping that's usually it. I have had to crawl out of the pool though... they start as foot cramps and then the outside of my lower legs, like between my shins and my calves start cramping, and THOSE will not work out. Also be careful how you push off the wall, that can trigger them too. It could just be a fitness issue and as you get more swim fit they may go away. Oh, and I count all my drills as swim yardage, because you are moving up and down the pool right? It's aerobic even if you are not working both the arms and legs. I also include my rest times in my logs too... If I'm in the water for an hour, rests included, I log an hour. I'll only fudge it if I know I've been gabbing for 20 minutes on and off! THAT I don't count! Now water temps and wetsuits... I'm pretty cold hardy I think in the water... I wore one when the water was 65, only because I'd brought it, it was a teeny tiny tri so I was already guaranteed a medal, and I thought I'd do it for the experience. I COULD have done it without. Getting down towards 60 and below... that's a toss up, probably would depend on the air temp a bit, and how long the swim was. 400 or less? Probably not... 750+, yeah, probably would. But that's just me... probably a lot of personal opinion on that one., Andrea. |

I'm looking at a short swim Sprint (1/4mile) that will be pretty cold. Where do you draw the line and need a wetsuit? I've only done 2 tris - both sprints with 1/4 mile swims - and wore my wetsuit during both. First race, water temps were low 60s (Atlantic Ocean in June, brrrr!); you definitely needed a wetsuit for this one. Second race, water temps were low 70s (lake in Sept); I would have been comfortable skipping the wetsuit for my second tri, but the wetsuit helped my swim speed even with the added time in transition taking it off. If I really didn't want to wear/purchase a wetsuit, I think I'd go wetsuit-less as long as the swim was no longer than 1/4 mile and the water temps were at least 68 degrees. But I agree with Hilde, it's a very personal decision. |

Erin - I was asking you personally since it's what I do. But I'll go with the experienced swimmers on whether to include them or not. As to the cramps - I haven't had any foot issues but I do get calf cramps when I swim sometimes - I'm usually able to finish the lap and it goes away if I do a stretch with my feet on the floor at the end but then flares up again when I get out and I have to stretch a few more times. Any idea what that could be experienced swimmers? Wrknigprogress - Good luck with the 10k this weekend. Hope it helps to kick things in to the next gear Nothing on the wetsuit issue as I don't own one yet and have yet to venture to the beach for an OWS - should probably do that soon while the weather holds - not sure which one to go to though. ON the biking shoes. Is it worth getting specific bike shoes yet or am I ok just wearing normal running shoes? |

I was on the trainer today, as I'm not quite up to doing one-leg spins out on the road. Just ordered a Garmin foot pod and bike sensor since I have a forerunner now. I'm going to sell my Cateye Astral 8 bike computer (has cadence), so if any MMM'er needs a bike computer, let me know, you'll get first shot. Still need to get a new bottle cage (or 2) and some warmer gloves for riding outside, but my next ride isn't till Wednesday, so I'll be good.
Sorry for the long post...but I wanted to catch up 5 pages...ugh...you guys rock!
Jen, awesome bike porn!!! Love it!!! Enjoy those one legged drills..haha...hopefully your left leg isn't as un-coordinated as mine!!! Suzie, I agree with everyone...your story is amazing!!! Very glad to have you in this group! Turtle...nice new wetsuit!!! Glad your husband has many purposes....a wet suit stripper - I need a job like that!! haha Melanie..I bought Vibrams last year and intended to train in them now.....but..with the new HIM goal I'm not sure it's a good idea to mix that level of training with Vibrams....so they may sit in my closet unused for awhile longer...dunno...I just didn't want to get hurt even if I start out slowly and build up....I'm a wuss and gonna stay with my Brooks.. Thanks for the pod runner link too..I've heard of that before but never gave it much thought...I may give it a try now that I know someone that endorses it...interesting thought..although I really like my angry music too.haha Also great job getting back into the pool...awesome to feel the awkward unbalance of the water again.....haha...not too long ago and I felt that way..ugh...but...it gets so much better as you know. Hilde, we appreciate all your inspires, but I agree with Janet - chill girl....the rest of the group will contribute and make everyone happy and content.....I'm always content...mostly just by being allowed to play around with this group....you are my entertainment..thanks!!! Joe, sucks your having issues with your Garmin 310....I have the 305 and as you've noted works fine...maybe goto the general forums and post on there...sucks to have uploading issues...I was throwing a fit for a few days until they got it fixed for me... Jen, glad you like the feeling of the new "fast" bike!!!! Being clipped in and being anxious will disappear fairly quickly...it's only taken me two fall overs and two crashes to get over the anxiousness. haha...now I just don't give a damn....and I clip out pretty quick -- right before I scream like a girl! Erin, great job of finding a new way to be really sore!!! When I did my first round of P90X - I felt just like that!!! They have a whole workout of Plyo and lots of other excruciating wonderful workouts!!! P90X helped my performance a ton from season 1 to season 2....loved it!!! Louise, I like the tips for beginner so unclip...I'd say...a real Triathlete must fall over a few times to really wear the badge!!! haha....I think we've had this discussion a few times over the past few years...and the stories are pretty funny....i fell in my garage once after a long ride....forgot to unclip...fell over and the concrete which was so cold and felt great - I just stayed there for about 5 minutes...laughing and hopping no one saw me. Tucker - great that you son is gonna follow in mama's footsteps....Peggy is the master of this one...both her kids have followed in her footsteps...my 5 year old Katie - who trains with me while Im running on the treadmill..haha...says she's gonna do one this summer...and they do have a really cool kids Tri that she could do....we are working on her swimming mostly now...I took her to the LBS over christmas break and they had a kids Felt road bike....she yells for me across the store...and says "Daddy - I NNNNEEEEEDDDDDD one of these - so I can be fast like you"!!!! I bought her ice cream and told her she was the bestestest girl in the world!!! For all the cold weather biking exchange of info here is how I handle the cold weather....Buy a trainer...but the bike in front of a 50" TV in the basement - put a fan in front of the bike....and only wear pantyhose while I bike!!!! I know..the mental picture is "SEXY" haha...ROTFLMAO....sorry - had to go there! Recover for soreness after P90X and now Tri stuff. I did a ton of research on recovery drinks and some make fun of me on here but it works...really works well and best of all - it's cheaper than premixed name brand stuff! Lots of proof that milk is a fantastic recovery drink. 8oz 2% milk 1 scoop muscle milk whey protein powder (27g protein) 1-2 teaspoon monohydrate creatine squirt of Hershey's syrup or a piece of fruit mix it all up and down it within 15 minutes of your workout....My soreness decreased immensely and my recovery was much better than before I started this.....I also had a friend of minethat had gone through 3 rounds of P90X so understood the normal level of soreness make fun of me....I gave him a few zip locks to make a weeks worth of drinks...and now he does this every single workout...says it has helped him a ton too...has never felt better after a workout...so - that's my plan....laugh all you want!

It worked (as does an ordinary big M from the local cafe, lol) but I'm always scared of ending up with too little milk for Dad to have his coffee which is never good, lol. Oh and I asked a question as to whether anyone else did it over on RW (there's a ? for the person below game thread on the beginners forum) and the person who answered had never even thought of it. Suzie, well it sounds like everyone includes their drills in the total swim yardage so that's good to know:-) As far as bike shoes, I just started road biking this past summer and rode for a couple months in running shoes. Everyone encouraged me to get bike shoes. I finally did, and even though they're just a little intimidating at first they make a big difference. They allow you to use more thigh muscles (as you're pulling AND pushing vs just pushing down), so you ride a lot more efficiently. They take a little getting-used-to, but I would highly recommend it! Tammy, hope that 10K's going well this morning! I always love racing the week before a goal race; it really seems to sharpen everything up. Can't wait to see how it goes. Thanks to everyone about the cramping advice. I'm also going to try to take electrolytes halfway through and see if that makes a difference. I've been swimming after my strength training or spinning sessions so the body might be a little depleted by the time I climb into the water. |
