I just got a new pair of Brooks PureCadence the other day. Ran in them yesterday for 30 minutes, then changed shoes and finished my run in my Brooks Glyercins. The two shoes have a totally different feel to them, neither is bad but neither is great!  Going to try and slowly break in my new shoes.

What shoes does everyone run in?

Keep in mind that the Pure Cadence puts you in a more natural running position.  More of a mid foot strike which is very efficient and helps with injury prevention.. The glycerine's are more of a traditional shoe that puts you in a more heel striking position.  My advice is stick with the cadence.  You'll be much more efficient and injury free running like that.  I switched to Newtons 2 years ago and not only broke all my running records at all distances but I trained virtually injury free.

I am a huge fan of a natural running stride!  Changes my life!

here is my question, do I just start using them as my main shoe right away or should I ease into them since it is a different shoe all together? Yesterday I did 30 minutes in them and then switched shoes...

Lunchtime swim: 2000 yds in 38:11. Felt good

Nice swim!

When some people turn to a more natural foot stride they do need some time to acclimate. Some people have calf issues during the change.  I hear that you should not switch back and forth because you want your body to get used to the mid foot strike.  I personally didn't have any problems.  I would stick with the Cadence.

Take a look at the "Newton" Website.  There is a lot of good information... I've got my uncle in Newtons, the doctor said he would never run again because of his knee problems.  He is now running 5 days a week.

Jim, I love that your going back at the Vineman.  I had a great day today.  Got 1600 yards of pool work in and things are starting to click.  Also got a 17 mile bike ride in.  I got on the scale and had lost 6 pounds since the last time I checked.  I'm down 73 pounds in 16.5 weeks.

Wow Larry, 75 lbs in 16 weeks is amazing! I've struggled with my weight for the last 10 years! What are you doing differently?

Larry - WOW!!! Congrats dude. Tri-training or not it still takes so much discipline to lose that much weight. You are a huge inspiration to all who are walking this process with you.

I am out of the shoe loop, but the conversation is informative.

Got in a swim today. Not sure what my pace was. Every time I looked at my watch after swimming 100 it would be around 2:20-2:40 per. I did two 50 on my back, which took longer. But in the end my watch ended up not giving me accurate info, so I don't know how long it took. But it felt good and I am over-all faster than I thought if my time is what I think it was. Phew...

Job interview tomorrow!

Jim, I am eating between 1800 and 2000 calories a day.  I eat six small meals a day, and I eat lean protein with every meal.  Probably 40% of my calories come from the protein.  I am also eating mostly complex carbohydrates (foods with a high Glycemic Index).  The only time I really eat simple carbs is when I am running or biking more than an hour.  I do count calories and figure out how many calories I burn during exercise, and work towards a 2000 calorie deficit per day, which equals 4 pounds a week.  I have found that I don't really miss the junk I used to eat, but I look forward to getting to eat more once I lose the last 35 pounds that I want.  I also haven't been drinking beer, which was a huge calorie issue before.

Tried out the new Mizuno Wave Creation 12's last night. I dropped the track in favor of a back road run. Much more fun. I found out that mapmyride.com tracks split times. Splits were 10:43, 10:10, 10:05.
Given Steve's history there may be hope for me yet.

Completely amazing -- way to go! 2000 cal/day deficit!!? wow. Truly inspriring.

False start w/ training yesterday, but will get back to trying tonight. An easy run, just get out and move. Tomorrow is a nice bike, and enjoy it. This now 9 day break is really freaking me out, as the race is only 7 weeks away, and I don't feel even close to ready - longest bike has been only 42 miles! Run I can deal with, and swim should be OK. But as everyone told me, if I don't get better, I won't be racing at all .

Congrats to everyone else for getting out there! Quite a bit going on!

Last night I had to squeeze in a trainer ride at 10PM to fit it in my schedule!

This morning I did 8.2 miles in my PureCadence and feel pretty good overall. I like the shoes alot better the second run than I did the first run.

30 mile ride and a 5 mile run on schedule tomorrow and then a much wanted rest day on Sunday!

And I was asked to join a team to run Tough Mudder in Oct! I am 70% excited and 30% nervous about it. I have to stop watching the YouTube videos of that race!  LOL

Hi guys,

Sorry I've been absent so much lately, but we just had another baby! it's been hectic to say the least.

Anyway, I've been back on my training (somewhat) this week.  The numbers have been poor, but not as bad as I would have thought after taking a couple of weeks off (not completely off, but my time was very limited).

Something I'm increasingly concerned about is my foot strike.  I know this, like many other things, is highly debated etc. etc. but I currently use a heel to toe roll when im running because that's what i was always taught to do for long distance running.  I know there's all this research now about striking on the balls of your feet (which i've always done with sprints etc) but I don't know how much of it to believe?

In the world of triathlon, running is definitely the discipline i know the least about.  Any resources/suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

lol please dont suggest barefoot running, I'm not there yet.

Steve, I wanted to run a few scenarios by you and see what you thought!! I just committed to Vineman Full on July 28th so that gives my 90 days or 13 weeks to get ready! I've got a great base going and feel very confident with some good long rides and runs I will be there! Last year I hit ground zero at 85 miles, so I definitely need more long stuff!

During the week I am very consistent with swimming M,W & F (and I just joined masters again). I run 3-4 days a week (usually 4-6 miles) during the week and a long run on Saturdays. I bike Tues and Thursdays (usually 20-25 miles) and a long bike on Sundays. I am planning on ramping up my long runs by doing a 15 then 18 then 20 then 15, 18. 24 etc. My long bikes will be 60, 80, 80, 100, 80, 100, 120, 60, 80, etc.

I would love your input on this and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks bud!!

Check out the Newton website.  Lot's of good info there for you.  I've mentioned before but I changed to a more natural foot strike and it changed my running life.

Wow, 10 pm trainer ride is serious dedication!  I'm usually asleep by then.

Been a busy end to the week, but squeezed in most of the training.  Bailed on the OWS today...had a knowledgable friend willing to help me with assessing my FIL's house, and needed to go with that.  Tomorrow is a longer ride than I'm ready for at 39 miles.  Charity ride with a friend or three, so hoping to continue the "biking is fun" theme.  Another sloggy 6 mile run this morning...still chalking it up to post marathon recovery, but sooner or later that is going to play out.

Hope you are all looking forward to the weekend and get in some good training!

Did 1100 yards in the pool, nice and slow (which is my only speed currently), checked the forecast for the weekend and decided to get my long bike in, 40 miles in 2:30.  I got my new saddle today, which is more cushioned, but didn't have time to put it on.  Guess what was really sore when I was done!!  Off to bed, then 9 mile run in the morning.

Jim it is going to be tough to bring your run up while double to trippling your bike distance and gradually increasing your swim in 3 months/ make that 9 weeks.  Your race is not going to be ideal. You also are not running enough miles a week to support your long runs which invites injury.  So with a long run of 13, you are looking at 14, 15, 16, 12, 17, 18, 19 12, 18, 12, 8 race That would give you 3 18 ish runs and you could survive the run, but if you are not getting at least 20 miles during the week in shorter runs you are at high risk.  Your bike is going to have to look like 70, 80, 90, 60, 100, 110, 60, 100, 115, 70 50 race. That will get you your 4 100s.  Then your swim will just have to build up to 3 or 4 5000s.

You shouldn't be doing more than 18 or 19 mile runs, the recovery time will wipe you out.  Your base is a little thin for a 9 week amp up to IM, but you can do it if you don't kill yourself training too hard or fast and you really need to pace yourself during the race.  Even longs of 17 or 18 are fine to top out at.  Amping up to a HIM is way easier than amping up for an IM.  On race day I want you to be in a comfortable pace all day.  I dont care if that is 2 hours on the swim, 8 hours on the bike and 6 hours on the run.  You need to be really comfortable in your pace the whole day.  Need you to be smiling and eating good stuffs at the finish line.  Also keep cool on the run.  I am worried about your IM, don't get sick in your training or injured!  You can do it but the margin of comfort is not great.

Whoo Hooo!! Finally back at it, and I feel great!!!  2 hour trainer ride this AM, just over 33 miles. Seemed to go well, and I was quite happy to be doing it. Maybe a short 'get reacquainted' run later today, and a longer one tomorrow. Back to the pool on Monday.

Overall I feel energized, and ready to roll. My body is saying "Finally!" . Still just 7 weeks to the race, and I'm mildly concerned, but I have plenty of training left, and intend to nail it.

And I'm thinking of buying some new wheels today (Mavic Cosmic SL's ). So its just a good day all around.

Hope everyone has as good a start to their Saturday.

- Mike

Way to go Mike!  I think sometimes an illness forces us into the rest that we needed and then we spring back stronger.

39 miles of FUN on the bike today at the Ryder Ride!  My first organized ride (other than tri's).  Rode with an awesome BT friend and we really enjoyed the journey through the rolling countryside.  Some pretty strong head and cross winds on the way out, which made for some nicer cruising on the way back.  I just might like biking after all .

Carol - Great ride.

Mike - It must feel great.

This morning started off cold and my wife surprised me by going for a 30 min walk this morning. So I joined her. I was still a little hesitant about running but had just encourage my daughter to go to swimming practice. Something was in the air. I felt good and turned some nice splits, 10:05, 10:25, and 9:30. Followed that up with a nice 35 min swim for 1000M. ALthough the coach tried to do me in with a parachute. 100M of that was enough for me.

You  guys are getting in some nice workouts.

I on the other hand have junk in my lung still 8(.  I thought it was clearing up but.. now bad again.

So slow 12 mile run for me today, may have laced the right shoe a touch tight.

Fun workout for you treadmill types, 10 min warmup then up 1/10 mph every quarter mile until you hit 30 sec slower than your 5k pace, or your 5k pace if you like than dtop it back down 1/10 mph (or one speed increment) per 10th of a mile until you reach your base pace again and finish at that pace.  That was my Thursday workout, got up to a 6:30 mph pace.  Then today no umpta, oh well.
