207 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I have four bottles on my bike. Two with just water and two with Gatorade / Powerade / Water with NUUN tablet in it. I go back and forth between water and other stuff all the time. Need to keep a balance otherwise I feel to loaded up with sugar or over hydrated with water. I've been mixing between gu and cliff bars. 2-3 gus per hour with a Cliff mixed in every 90 minutes or so. Seems to be working well for me. Now to figure out a good way to execute the perfect Code Yellow...... you carry 4 bottles during your race? That is quite a bit of weight to lug around.... especially with there being aid stations like every 30 min on that course |

207 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Originally posted by weiky I am hurting a little from this past weekend, we did about 80 miles on Saturday on the bike in about 5 hours, climbing over 6000 feet and it was in the upper 90's...i think i need to learn to ride on a belly that is fuller with liquid. I was a really dehydrated at the end of that ride. yesterday we did a light 1 hr spin and then 2 hr run, i got 15.5 miles in, but a again i was a bit dehydrated at the end. my issue on the bike is after about 3 hours, i cannot hardly stomach perform anymore and my body only craves water. i don't know if that is a sign of me already being dehydrated or not. I know the bike is my weak point and will dictate my day... I tried perform for my first IM back in 08 and knew after a couple of sessions it wasnt going to work. I think it has something to do with the type of protein they use cant remember if it is milk isolates or what but man busted up my stomach after a couple hours and after an hour on the run i needed a bathroom.... glad i found that out before race day |

Starting to feel stronger following the recovery from IM M-T in August man i have never ran that fast... the other day i worked my off for one mile at 7:48 hahaha.... my 29 inch inseam and 200 pounds wont help that ! |

Veteran 820 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread How much food do you really need? I know everyone is differant but just asking. You could tape any kind of bar to the top tube etc. If your using gels I find it more convientiant to put them in a water bottle, about 12 of them, 2 scoops perform and top off with water. Drink about 2 onces every 15 min. That way my bento is more than big enough to carry what I want, though I'm a minimalist in that respect. Don't get me wrong, I pack more than what I need, but my bike isn't all cluttered up like some I see with 33 gels taped to them. Although if it is a shorter race you can neatly tape gels to the top tube and stack them right behind the stem, and cut up power bars will actually stick to your top tube if you don't mind the chance of a nat or peice of dirt getting stuck to them here or there, just extra protein lol. At least thats the way I did it 20 years ago with the bars. |

You can use your bento box and can store some items in your tri top. As previously mentioned, taping to your top tube is also something to try out. If you still don't have space, remember that you can always utilize your SN's bag while on the bike. Carry all you can at the start and stop at SN's for the remainder of your nutrition. For me, I carry everything in my bike jersey. It's too convenient for me not to wear/use. I'll have a concentrated Infinit mix on my downtube and tthe following in my jersey - two packs of Fig Newtons, two Powerbars, and a Payday bar. It's really not that much to carry around. |

207 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I will live off of honey stinger waffles and rice things that scratch labs has a recipe for... this is why long rides with nutrition plans are HUGE part your deep weeks. The waffles are flat and fit in my tri pockets easy... i can put 10 in there if i needed to... but 5 plus a few rice cakes and then perform from the aid stations... and that hidden candy bar for that omg i need real food feeling. like it was said before it isnt much to carry and i never use a SN bag... my bento is for a second tube and my flat kit.... what is the formula... like 280 - 300 per hour on the bike you should shoot for??? everyone is different but i think that is what the standard is.... so you are looking at like 1800 cal on the bike for the average rider. That is easy to fill with the course drink and gels, bars, gu, uncrustables, delivered pizza, sushi, in n out, what every your stomach will handle. |

Since you use your bento as your flat bag where do you put all the waffles? I am guessing you wear a bike jersey rather than a tri top? My tri top pockets can fit a gu but not a waffle. Where do you put your rice cakes? Just trying to figure it all out. I don't want to stop at SN unless I need a tube. Do you only carry one extra tube? I have been using a water bottle for my 'flat bag' though I am not sure that is the best idea. |

Extreme Veteran 648 Scottsdale | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Originally posted by blackorcutt IMAZ Vets, typically how strong is the wind on the bike course and how much did it affect you? I feel very comfortable with my bike but whenever someone breaks wind I feel like Im pulling a 50lb weight. So I am feeling a bit concerned. Any advice or previous experience would be appreciated! Winds on the Beeline the last couple years of IM AZ shifted during the bike portion. Early there was a slight headwind (more of a cross wind) going uphill, then by the 2nd loop the winds had shifted and there was wind from the south, making the downhill portion a bit more of a grind than on calmer days. That being said, the wind was not anything too formidable, but just enough to keep you working for the entire ride. I raced my 80mm aero wheels both years and had no problems getting pushed around by the wind, as I have at Oceanside. |

Extreme Veteran 648 Scottsdale | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Tons of people on the Beeline last weekend made the day fun overall. 3000m pool swim followed by 92 miles on the IM bike course, and 16mi around Tempe Town Lake (in 95 degree temps) - long day, but totally worth it. No SOMA for me this year. Plans have me doing a second race simulation the following weekend (4000m/108mi/18mi) along the course (except the swim, of course), so I decided to take SOMA off (ut will be out there with my ONE peeps volunteering and cheering). After the race sim it is 3 weeks of step-down tapering up to race week, with tons of Bikram Yoga and massages to loosen up the muscles and joints and stay limber. |

Make October Count and finish your training strong, November is just around the corner! Ain't this the truth! How did everyone's September go? Personally, I'm happy it's behind me and the cooler weather is here. This will be my first IM and I've heard all year about the proverbial wall(s) we'll have to break through leading up to race day. Well, September was my wall and I slammed into it pretty hard. I had about 10 days of crappy training in the middle of the month due to travel for work. When I got home, I just wanted to sit on the couch and watch TV. I was sick of the heat, sick of training, in a bad mood, blah blah blah. I also did the Lifetime Tempe Tri (Oly) in late September which caused me to miss a big training weekend. All in all, my totals turned out ok and I'm happy I was able to shake this negative time in my journey towards being an Ironman. September totals - Swim - 6:29 hours, 24,675 yards Bike - 25 hours, 381 miles Run - 11:54 hours, 80 miles Been in a much better mood the last couple weeks and am looking forward to a final month of HARD training. Let's do this |

God I hope not. My plans don't show anything like this on the schedule. Makes me think that I am not even close. I did have a great September of training. Swim and Bike are strong. Run will probably be a sufferfest but I'm sooo excited. Holy Jesus 46 days. |

Pro 4824 Houston | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I don't record distances on everything since a lot of my swimming is masters and cycling is intervals without measured distance. Swim: 7:47 Bike: 18:00 - Actually hopped back on the trainer for 2 minutes when I realized I was at 17:58. Run: 12:33 Not super happy with September but I am dealing with a significant saddle issue which will require surgery though I am hoping to put that off until after the race. Redman and my injury there also dorked some things up. |

Yeppers, I am mighty, mighty slow. Bad news is my derailleur hanger fractured on my P2 turning last Saturday's 80 mile bike into a 75 bike/5 walk. Unfortunately Cervelo will not warrant the hangar on a P2. Good news is a new Shiv is waiting for pickup tonite. |

128 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Now that October is here I am getting super paranoid about something happening and I'm getting overly cautious, especially on the rides. Totals for September: Swim: 4 hours (I have only been swimming one day a week because of a shoulder injury that probably needs surgery.) Bike: 24 hours Run: 11 Hours This race can't come fast enough. Here in the north east the weather has been great but the shorter days and kid back in school is really compressing the amount of time I have available to get out during the week. Usually one of the mid week workouts has to give but I am making sure all the long rides and runs get done. Keba |
