Member 1083 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Geez guys you've already lost over 41 lbs as a group? That seems pretty great.Keep up the good work everyone. Some body asked about sleep I have to admit that in order to get the early workouts done I need my 8 hours of rest. So I'm an early to bed kind of person. Some days I might even be asleep before my kids (sad but perhaps true). Last night I was up a little late just goofing off online and it was hard to get up this morning. Also today is the day I workout by myself in the garage so with nobody waiting for me it's easy to say ... okay 5 more minutes. But I did get up and get my workout in. |

New user 124 Baton Rouge, LA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Yesterday I did a 30 minute bike. Not that big of a deal until 15 minutes in it began to rain... I live on a small street connected to a huge church so I can get confidence on my bike while on the road and not on the stationary bike. I wanted to quit when it began raining but i made myself stay out there and finish. I was proud (and wet). If it had been raining hard I would have come home but it was a light drizzle. I skipped my workout today because my husband, daughter, and I celebrated valentines day today since he works tomorrow night. Tomorrow I am waking up at 4:30am, getting a light breakfast, head to the gym for my weights/AB's, then jump in the indoor pool for a 1,100 meter swim. After I finish that I am going home for a 31 minute run around my neighborhood (C25K-Week 3, Day 1). That afternoon I am also going to do a 30 minute bike followed by an easy 10 minute transition run. Tomorrow should A.) Kick my butt for eating all the crap I ate today and B.) Really test my endurance and my ability. In all honesty, I just don't want to die. Happy Valentines Day to all of you! |

Member 51 Los Angeles | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Hey everyone! Hope you are all doing well. I came across this really cool graphic the other day illustrating IM splits. Thought I'd pass it along. http://triathlete-europe.competitor.com/2012/02/16/in-numbers-the-i... The graphic points out that the swimming leg of an IM is only 10 percent of the race. Put that together with the fact that swimming gives such a diminishing return for your effort (for instance, in running if you put 100% effort in, you pretty much get 100% return in speed. Put 100% effort into swimming and you get a measly 30% increase in speed, at least according to some estimates.) Talk about strategizing! Maybe we shouldn't be swimming that hard but running and biking our fannies off. Food for thought. Good luck on your workouts! Edited by gmorning 2013-02-14 3:47 PM |

New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Went to the doctor yesterday to try and figure this sciatica thing. The good news is the therapist thinks I will be 100% by the end of February so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Going nuts missing one and a half weeks of running time and losing all that mileage I have been putting in the bank. Really stinks, I heard people say if you lose two straight weeks it is almost like starting over. Hitting the pool for the first time tomorrow at 6:00 AM and really looking forward to it. Hoping everyone is having a nice Valentines Day! |

New user 124 Baton Rouge, LA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED I've been taking the last few days off since I haven't been feeling too well. I wanted to be well rested and healthy for my 10k yesterday. It was cold (28 degrees) running on top of the levee and colder when the wind blew off of the Mississippi River. I felt knee pain the first mile and almost turned around and DNF but I kept going and by mile 2 I felt ok! I think my knee was just stiff from the cold weather. I didn't PR, in fact I was 6 minutes off of my best time, but I did feel steady on my run. I felt the best I have ever felt during a 10k. I HATE running uphill but I made myself run every uphill I could even if I was on a walking interval. The triathlon I am doing in May is a little hilly so I needed to practice. I was shocked that walking uphill is harder than running up hill! Anyone else feel that way or am I just crazy? After the 10k I got wrangled into running a 5k night trial run last night. I have never done that and I was scared but I did it and I had a fun time. I did have a little problem since I didn't have trail shoes. My poor Newtons didn't give me any traction so I slid and slipped everywhere. At one point I hyperextended my knee and was in pain but I just slowed down and took my time until I finished. Trail running is so much different than road races or triathlons. Trail runs are less stressful and less competitive. No one talks about pace, splits, or times. They just talked about which puddles of mud tried to take their shoes off and which stumps they tripped over. It was really fun and I would like to do another one down the road. Today I am going to rest my body and relax my muscles. Tomorrow I will pick up with my tri training. I cannot wait until my first tri of the season in May!!! |

New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Thanks G! Pool went very well. Going to play it smart and not run until the therapist and doctor say it is OK. My doctor is 62 and just started doing Tris 2 years ago. He said he met an 80 year old guy last year doing his first Tri ever - Very Cool!
BTW - Liked the IM split, swim effort to overall beneficial return info - interesting perspective.

New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED In at 181 this week, all this inactivity due to the sciatica pain is killing me. Went back to see the nutritionist this week and she kind of did an about-face on the double carbs and protein to feed the engine thing. Back to lower carbs and going to try and use my fitness pal.

Haven't been able to run yet. i've done some swimming and a little bit of weights. I can't stand being injured, and it's very frustrating. Following up with chiro this week. Hope everyone has a good week

Maybe we shouldn't be swimming that hard but running and biking our fannies off. Food for thought. Good luck on your workouts! Gretchen, I am not fast but I certainly subscribe to this theory. In every TRI I do, I count the swim as the warm-up to the bike and run. Going all out in the swim for me just wears me out too early in the race and the bike and run suffer as a result. This became truly evident to me last year during TRI Rock Lake Geneva. Which I was slow as usual, but that is not the point. The point is I road the bike course probably 6 times prior to the race as training and preparation. Right after the start is a long steep hill that during training I was generally zone 5 and took another mile to recover from once I cleared the top of the hill. During the race took that hill after the swim and was probably only zone 3 maybe zone 4 by the time I got to the top. Thanks for sharing this information with the group. |

New user 41 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED 199.6, losing about half a pound a week. I'm happy with that. Coming down with a cold. Skipped today's bike, but I'm packing my bag to run and swim tomorrow. As long as I can breath through my nose, I should be good to go. |

Member 1083 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Swimming is time-wise the shortest amount of time but on the other hand for a lot of triathletes it's the hardest part. For me I think that really being ready for the swim makes a big difference in how the rest of the race will go. Which leads to my personal rule ...never skip a swim workout :-) gmorning - 2013-02-13 4:46 PM Hey everyone! Hope you are all doing well.
