Master 2484 St. Louis | Subject: RE: Bike workout terms Originally posted by SmallTriGirl I had a workout on my training plan that put me in the big ring for the entire workout. I had to work my way down from Big Ring/Easiest to Big Ring/Hardest for the first 27'. At that point, I had to do 10 repeats of 30" grind 30" all out, 30" stand, 30" grind in the hardest gear. What is the actual definition of "grind"? Is that just sort of a recovery that still sucks? FWIW, my little legs couldn't deal with the hardest gear on the trainer for 20' and I had to pop up to an easier gear after 5 repeats. Glad I have a few months before I race and that race will be flat! Not 100% sure but I think you are right. Just keep the crank turning and grind away until your next all out. |

Hahaha, didn't cave into temptation and my friends let me hear it because I've been bragging for two years about my fantasy football superiority. |

Extreme Veteran 1704 Penticton, BC | Subject: RE: Bike workout terms Carlo - My weight lately has been 184lbs and my BMI is an embarrassing 28. I need to lose 20lbs to not be "Overweight". I can't imagine that happening but I can change my diet. You're considerably younger than me so your body may yet be more forgiving so you can still hope to lower your A1C. Plus, I'm still planning to get things back under control. Thanks for your support. Kyle - Glad you can float. Once you get out in open water it may come in handy. We have a small lake near here that doesn't allow anything bigger than a canoe so we swim across the lake and it is pretty cool to find yourself in the middle of the lake at times. It was really quite neat to swim around the whole lake (about 1km in diameter). Tay - Your swimming pace is impressive to me and you'd be in our fast lane for our group. Your group sounds bigger than ours, we usually have 3 lanes and 7 to 12 people (up to 5 people per lane). I am taking tablets for the diabetes and trying to control it with diet as well so I won't need more meds. I like my medium lane for swimming but to get faster I need to swim/bike/run with the faster people. My age limits how fast I can go. Donna - Glad to see you're still with us. Keep up your hard work on the trainer and it will get easier. I hate standing up, it makes my thighs burn but I can now manage a full minute several times in a row with 1 minute recoveries in between. Keep up the good work everyone. |

Over the next few years got remarried, had kids, got busy at work, and slowly let myself decline into the worst shape of my life. I've always participated in team sports, but after seeing that I was the heaviest I've been, I started a Biggest Loser contest at my job. I also have a colleague who done an IM and has been trying to get me to do some sort of tri with him (I did the one in 2006 with him) so I've finally decided to get myself in gear. Doing some research over the last week or so and I came across this site and this group. Family: Married with 4 young kids (all under 8) Training: Nothing serious. I've been riding my exercise bike and finally went out running this weekend. Guess I'll load up on those now and focus on swimming when the weather warms up (unless I scrap together enough money to hit a gym). 2014 races: looking to do a sprint tri in June and July and an Olympic at the end of August. Weight loss: 8 pounds since Jan. 8th. Need to lose another 20 at least. |

Extreme Veteran 1704 Penticton, BC | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN I had a "clicking" kind of swim today. I was swimming strong (well, it felt strong) and I was keeping up with a fellow I've never been able to keep up with and I didn't need to stop for breaks other than to hydrate with some water a few times. I even felt faster in my kicking and catch-up drills. Plus. for about 8 lengths I was able to draft off the fast fellow in my lane without getting dropped. I recorded the swim as 2000m but I lost count a couple times so I think it was actually 2100m. I'd love to have a couple more swims like that. PsyTri - Thanx for the stats. Does it take long to do the graph? Even though I recorded all my workouts I was really shocked at my running. I think that is my furthest running month ever. Really pleased with that. Mike (Ransick) - My last run was a bit uncomfortable in my right knee so now I'm a bit leery of running in case of aggravating it. Any cautions or suggestions? I'm hoping to run either tomorrow or Wednesday. I also have an appointment to see my bike fitter about my shoes/clips to alleviate my right knee biomechanics for riding as well which may correct the running problem. I really want to keep up my running at January levels and higher. Rich - Welcome to the group. Ask lots of questions. Kyle - Where can you swim OW near Edmonton? And, how is it for swimming? Greg - You have excellent self-control. Keep it up. |

So far I have been experiencing "death by lane line" in the pool haha. I am pretty jealous of your weather, and your running mileage. Edited by TRIal_of_miles 2014-02-03 10:00 PM |

My bad on the stats. I'll check back thru tomorrow. It does not take too long but I obviously need to take a few more moments to get it right! |

82 | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Wow third on the bike! That makes me happy! Wabamen is only half an hour away and has a swimming beach there that tends to be good And supposedly you can swim at Lake summer side in Edmonton and Halfmoon Lake on the east side! They have OW tris there so..... |

Extreme Veteran 1704 Penticton, BC | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Mike - Thanks, pretty much what I figured. I haven't run since Thursday so I'm planning to try an easy slow (12:00/mi) run and see how it feels. If at all possible I'll run outside but we'll see what the weather holds for me. I also had a bit of a re-fitting today that made a difference in how I felt on my bike tonight. The fitter spent a fair bit of time changing my shoes and even put in a mild wedge for my left foot and then adjusted my saddle as well. I thought it was odd that I'm feeling right knee issues but the bulk of adjusting was to my left foot. Tay - Just keep going. You're doing great. Kyle - You may be 3rd on the bike but I peeked at your times and you're about 30% faster than me. I'd sure love to ride at your pace. I've heard of Wabamen (west of Edmonton). My wife and her family were from Sherwood park (and Mundare) many years ago. I'm looking forward to swimming tomorrow. |
