Deepest (cough cough) sympathy to you Milaminute and Sparky -- I'm SUFFERING with 48 degree weather -- although it was only 27 this morning when I left for the pool.   But the good news ----- 70 for my bike ride this coming Saturday  (yea me!   )

Have Fun in the windy city!

Thanks for the sympathy.  I can't warm up.  I don't know how you people that deal with this on a regular basis do it.  I can't believe I used to live where it was this cold for much of the winter!  A 70* bike ride is pretty darn perfect, Brett.  I think we'll be back in the 50s this weekend.  Nice for running, a little chilly on the bike descents but I can deal with it .

5.4 miles running tonight. Last run before 4 days of rain. Yes we are fixin to send y'all rain sometime in the next 10 days.

The half marathon is supposed to have rain like crazy. Whoopee 2 hours 15 minutes or so of running in cold rain, and then waiting another 2 hours in the cold rain waiting for g/f and her sister to run/ mostly walk the same half.

Oh then wait for the shuttle bus to take us back to the car, as it is a point to point race.

I fixed that for you.  No charge.  Let me know if anyone needs any additional tutoring in southern speak.  At the most, ummmm... interesting?... wedding I ever went to there was an old beat up pick up truck with a piece of posterboard taped to it that said "Fixin' Ta Wed" with an arrow to help people remember to turn.  The bride was driven to the top of the aisle in a corvette, her father had on silver cowboy boots.  Her dress unzipped (why bother with bustling?) to turn into a mini-dress for the reception.  Now that I'm older and wiser, I think it's a hoot and love that it was a different kind of wedding.  Plus, it was  incredibly fun (the reception was a backyard BBQ... kegs and burgers!).  However, at the time I was completely unamused .

Cash... I think it's great that you and the g/f and doing the half mary "together" this weekend... be patient waiting on her!  I hope you get a weather reprieve.  Maybe you can get Elheffe to meet you at the finish with warm clothes and a hot toddy while you wait.

Awesome!  I like the concept of a reverse tri.  I think the natural spacing of the swim sounds pretty appealing and I like running on fresh legs.  Has anyone done one?  How did your experience with it compare to a traditional format?

I've done a couple of reverse sprints and they can be fun, although I would just expect that your swim will be a bit (not signigicantly, but somewhat) slower than you would do otherwise since you feel strong on the run, you'll have a tendency to push it a bit and then push on the bike.  By the time you get to the water, you've shot a pretty good load of your energy!   But it is a fun concept.  Best part -- don't have to get on the bike while you're all wet!

Good luck!

No charge for the sympathy!

I dealt with it for about 4 years.   I even did a run in -20 (yes that's MINUS 20 F) one winter (fortunately no wind and sunny skies) which was ,er, uh .... fun ... yea that's it -- fun.....  The truly funniest part of it was that because it was so cold we had all put on TONS of layers.  By the time we were 1.5 miles into the 5 mile run we were complaining of being too warm!  Go Figure!

At the end, one of the guys' wives came out and took pictures of us.  We looked like Abomminable Snowmen.   Steam was coming off of us from everywhere and because it was so cold, it crystalized and we had snow crystals all over -- head, shoulders, knees, you name it -- was a pretty funny site!

Good LUCK!

I get back into the groove tomorrow.

Gavin came out of surgery just fine.  He's pretty much back to normal now.

I'm afraid of the reverse tri concept, just because the idea of swimming when you're exhausted sounds like a drowning accident waiting to happen.  Can you tell that swimming is not my strongest point?  LOL

Not mine either but I figure I could just doggy paddle... easier to justify doggy paddle at the end of a race (Yes, yes, I was just so tired!) than at the beginning .

Mila!!!  I was exhausted this morning.  No workout.  Had a wrap-up meeting and rushed to Midway to catch my flight.  Stuck in traffic on 55 for 20 min...the reason?  An accident in the OPPOSITE lane.  COME ON PEOPLE!  An accident in the oncoming lane SHOULD NOT STOP TRAFFIC!!!  Especially if there's a big concrete boundary between our lane and the opposing lane.  Ugh.  To make matters worse, the guy behind me was honking up a storm.  Uh...I can't move.  Do you think the people a mile down the road can hear you honking?  IDIOT.

O.K.  I'm home.  The sun will come out...tomorrow...bet you bottom dollar that tomorrow...there'll be sun...(and 50 degrees on the weekend!!!).

okay, I threw caution to the wind tonight and signed up for a Sprint tri on 3/29 (500 M swim, 11 mi. bike, 3 mi. run).  The thought of waiting until August was bringing my motivation down.  So now I'm wondering if I should change over to the 13 week original sprint plan.  I was doing the 20 week now, at at week 12 of the current plan I won't be up to the distances for the race.  Hubby got brave too and wanted in, it will be his first tri and he is not even working out consistently now.  I was hoping maybe we could do the same plan, he can just add in breaks where needed.  What is the consensus?

Gygy,

Glad your son came through surgery well. I was thinking of him.

Reverse tri's are fantastic for me. The swim is usually shorter than normal, and almost always in a heated pool. So if you are tired, you are just a few strokes from the rope lane dividers or side of the pool.. It is legal to hold onto them if you are tired, but not legal to advance yourself by pulling yourself forward on them. Plus there are usually life guards on duty for extra safety. And the pools are generally 50 meters long so at most you are 25 meters from either end. Perfect for weak swimmers like me.

Plus you don't have that brick leg feeling on the run after the bike.

Your tri should be just fine. Work on your swimming. I bet you could do the run and the bike just fine right now.

Note: men are silly and think we can do anything with minimal training. We usually survive anyway.

Thanks!  LOL, so true about men.  In 2001 my hubby ran a 10K on about 2 weeks preparation, I was dragging him, but he made it.  I think I could do the bike and run, and I definately need to work on my swimming, are my blogs that obvious?

Yay GyGy!  That's great!  Most sprint tri programs are about 12 weeks anyways.  What you might be able to do is continue your 20-week program with the end date on 3/29.  Just start at the training plan that corresponds with today.

Congrats on getting hubby involved.  My wife did her 1st tri last year.  We had a blast training together.  Since she was a beginner, I would just make sure my recovery days corresponded with days I would work out with her, and would just bike/run at her pace.

I think 3 months is MORE than enough time to train for your first tri.  Remember not to stress out too much about your 1st tri.  Make it an enjoyable experience.  Any time you post will be a personal best

We all expect you to do it "swimmingly"!

Half marathon this coming Sunday. Prediction for race time is showers, mid 40's temp 12 mph winds. It may be heavy rain, but taht is supposed to be done the night before.

Should I go with long sleeve tech, short sleeve tech or sleeveless tech.

Yes will be wearing a running hat.

I know I can't stay dry, but want to try to stay as warm as possible.
