a 75 Kg rider with avg Coefficient of Drag of 0.5 and rolling resistance of 0.004 (i.e. continental GP 4000 with butyl tubes) holding 180 watts over a relatively flat 112 mile course will net you a 5:55 hr bike split.

If you keep the same tires but use latex tubes it can save you around ~6 minutes, and if you change to tires with lower Crr and using latex tubes it can save you ~12 min.

Not bad, you get "free" speed (or more precisely cheap) for around 100.00 USD investment. AGers can gain up to 20-30 min of free speed on their final split if they would consider speed extraction; that is how can you save time and/or go faster with same effort level by just paying attention of the details and making minor tweaks.

Stuff you should/could consider are:
  • Bike position, better CdA = free speed
  • Better tires/tubes, lower Crr = free speed
  • nutrition/flat kit placement, lower CdA = free speed
  • stay aero most of the time = less energy used (kJ)
  • Bike maintenance:
  1. adequate gearing - avoid power spikes, save energy (kJ)
  2. lubed-clean chain/cassette, tune up, etc = free speed
  • improve transitions, avoid wasting time = free speed for same effort level
  • run the tangents = less energy wasted (kJ)

I just wanted to reiterate the importance of bicycle maintenance.  Having a proper maintained and tuned machine can save you time, effort and your life.  Getting to know some simple bicycle maintenance like clean and lubing the chain, proper adjusted of shifting and braking, proper tire inflation, flat repair and how to remove the wheels.

There is so much more to check and if time is and issue get it to a bike shop.  This is the time to do it.

tasr - 2010-06-28 7:10 AM I am looking forward to the new course as well.

I like that turn up the hill at Jay.  It gave me a point to focus on.  I guess I’ll have to extend that point.

What I don’t get is there still is a 1 miles out and back on Haselton.  Couldn't that 2 miles be pluged into the trip up 9N?

I'm just thinking that it would be the best place for the water-stop.. Other than that, you are right, although if you keep going, you go in town and there are a couple of bridges, and maybe they didn't want the traffic to mess them up.

does anyone have a map of where the current water stops are, I know they will change, but I'm curious.

The course I thought was AWESOME, and very challenging!!!!  Got goose bumps as I went by the stadium/oval....  YES THIS IS MY FIRST AND I AM NERVOUS AND EXCITED!!!!!

In reference to whos going up there with me...
My wife, mom, dad & his wife, sister, and her partner nephew, friends great times!!!!  Going up Wed through Wed...  Staying in Condos at opposite side of swim start....

I had a pretty solid weekend training-wise.

Yesterday was pretty epic.  I went up to the gaps and did a 5.5 hr ride (>15,000' of climbing) and then hit up a 30 minute run.  I think I even managed my effort on the climbs really well.  I was pretty stoked as I wasn't dead legged at all during the entire ride.  It's amazing what you can do when you keep your power at .7 FTP and just spin up the hills.

Oh yeah...I also won the Sprint on Saturday and rode afterwards.  I think peak fitness is coming...I'm really excited!!!

Yeah... I couldn't imagine waiting on the shoreline, with my son, waiting for my husband to come out of the water and he never does.  The article said there were only 100 people in each wave at that Philly triathlon and we're starting with 3,000 all at once.  I wasn't nervous for the swim start until this.

IMLP training starts today!! I can't wait. Less than a month away! My first swim lesson in tonight. I put a new chain on my bike (the old one was very rusty from sitting on the back porch for two years). Can anyone recommend a good running shoe? The last pair I bought was in 1989.
Thanks

Don't be nervous. Wait until the final report comes out. The philly race is very safe and the river was calm. Chances are this was a heart/health related accident. It has happened at other races and unfortunately will probably happen again. That said, it could have happened on a 5K run through the neighbor hood or during a swim at the local gym. My heart goes out to his family for such a tragedy. If there is any good from this, it really showed the quality of people who participate in our sport. The Oly was changed to a duathlon on Sunday in brutal heat conditions out of respect for the missing man. Not one person I talked to was in the least bit not understanding of this. No one wanted to run twice on such a hot day, but everyone understood and kept it all in perspective.

There is 0 reason to be nervous since you have the training.  If you're worried about the start.  Be standing on the shore when the cannon goes off.  Then get in the water and start.  Mass start avoided and clean water ahead.

kcb203 - 2010-06-26 8:18 PM I just saw this posted--the bike route has officially been changed:

http://www.ironmanlakeplacid.com/course.php

The bridge project on the Haselton Rd. section of the Ironman Lake Placid bike course will not be completed in time for the July 25 race. The 2010 alternate route will utilize 5.6 miles of Route 9N north from Jay to Ausable Forks as well as 1.0 miles of Haselton Rd. The Jay bike aid station (formerly positioned in the parking area just before entering the hamlet) will now be just north of the Jay intersection to be accessible on the way out to Ausable Forks and on the way back into Jay. The aid station at the Wilmington Fire Station will now only be accessible on the way out from the short Haselton Rd. turnaround. Please check back to this website next week for an updated course map.

Look at this new course as a better chance to hydrate well before the climbs.  Maybe you would not need to carry so much water up the hill.

I agree. Truthfully the Hazelton section was always a problem for me as the few hills kind of ate me up on the second loop.

Looking forward to the new changes!

OK, my question for those who have recently ridden the course:

How far down Hazelton is the big hill? Is it more than a mile I hope?? I remember there was a big climb on the way back just before the firehouse. It's been two years, but does the new course mean that hill is no longer in the race?? This was the hardest hill on the Hazelton loop (not the course) from what i can remember.

Thanks!

A friend just checked his SRM data from last year and it looks like the race use to turn right on Hazelton at mile 28.8 and stayed pretty flat until after mile 30 so it looks like that hill is probably cut out of the new course. Would suck to have the turn around at the bottom of that hill and then have to go back up it with no momentum. Makes sense that it is probably out of the course.

Are you guys getting excited? You are next ones.

Someone should start an IMLP watching thread once bib numbers are posted. You guys can post your bib numbers, #IMs you have done and goals, with your real name and see if some folks will volunteer to do updates. I would offer but I'll be on day 3 of 1600 mile car trip on race day.

I rode it last weekend....we did two miles out and back on Hazelton and the hill was right at the end, so it should NOT be in the course for race day...THANK GOODNESS!!

This actually might be quite accurate for some of us....  not that i know anyone.

LBS just retaught me how to change a flat.  I couldn't remember from last year.  No sarc font sadly!

I just read the last four pages. Prayers to that poor Dad and husband in Philly.

Crazy week last week: Final week of school for my wife (teacher) and my kids ended school earlier so I had lots of Daddy duty, celebrated my 9th wedding anniverary, two birthday parties, graduations, my mom retired, just a super-crazy week.

I'm looking to get back on track this week.  I'm getting re-fit on my bike for the 3rd time tomorrow; hopefully 3rd time is a charm .  I'm shooting for my two Biggest Volume weeks this week and next week, then Taper-Time starting the 12th.  Cutting 40% then 60%.  Tapering the Run 14-days out, Bike 10-Days out, Swim 7-days out.

If anybody is interested in riding the "New LP Course" on Saturday 10th, send me a PM.  Like to ride around an 18.5 mph avg, first thing early Saturday morning.  My ride on the LP Course will be my last Long Ride till Race Day.
