My nephew is running his second 10K and is totally excited! He won a 2nd place AG award for a 5k a few weeks ago and has a good chance to win another this weekend at the 10K! That is awesome. My daughter ran a 6:45 mile last year at 9.5 in the spring. Her teacher told them for their birthday they can pick an activity that lasts for 15 minutes and then entire class has to do it. So she picked running the mile much to the chagrin of some of them. She came in at 5:59. So I took her running last week to see how she would hold up on a longer run. We were about a quarter of a mile in and she is just talking smack because I told her two warm-up, three tempo and 1 cool down. "I'd already be done with a mile if you weren't slowing me down....." and with that she steps on an acorn and lands on her . Once I knew she was ok I just kept laughing and she turned red, LOL. So we get a mile in and she is just talking non-stop so I'm like OK time to pick up the pace. So we got from a 10/mile to an 8/mile for mile two and she's still talking like it's nothing. I keep that pace for miles 3 and 4 and she literally hasn't stopped the entire time. Mile 5 we hit a hill and I decide to power up it to see what the effect will be. I look at the Garmin and we're running 7:15 pace up about a 3% grade and she is finally quiet. We hit the top and she takes a big breath and declares I hate hills and goes back to talking non-stop. I'm going to do a few races with her and I think she can break 20-21 in a 5K and 46-47 in a 10K. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Yeh, the kids are so much fun and they do learn to talk smack pretty quick! We don't even make it too the start line before he is sneaking up to the front of the start lines ... He doesn't really like running that much I don't think, but he like the medals and accolades he gets when he does well. So I think that is what is driving the interest right now. It is hard to find 5k's and 10k's that give medals though. Not alot out there. I don't care, it is something fun we can do together so we always have great stories. You should do a turkey trot with your daughter. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Lots of all out 100s in the pool today. Improved my times by 3-5 seconds per 100 from last week's effort. I think I try to increase turnover and sacrifice form when I'm doing these sometimes. Today I tried to stay long and use a powerful pull, and it worked! Woot! Maybe I can get those 100 times down to 1:10 in a couple weeks. It's supposed to be in the upper 60s here on Sunday, and I'm excited to get back out on the roads before the snow hits. I'm going to give my bike a good cleaning, too. |

But I won't. It will make me antsy and I feel less energetic.
Anywho I'm considering dropping my gym membership and joining the masters class at the local pool. Same price per month. I could swim M-Th with M and W being coached or T-F with W and F being coached. I've held onto my gym membership because I love lifting, but I think maybe just an investment in a TRX (or build one myself) would suffice. Decisions, decisions. |

Something about my work in the pool doesn't translate to open water though, so I still need lots more work. I went 26 at the olympic distance and 38 at the HIM distance. That doesn't add up, IMO. My HIM time should have been closer to 34. I'm frightened to know how long the 2.4 miles will take me. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED I do a KB dvd some afternoons. I have 3 different KBs/weights. Madge (5 year old) has started doing the workout with me. She uses the 5 lb. KB. She begs me to go down and workout, so she can use the KB. She set up stations in my workout room - jumping jacks, crunches with KBs, planks, and yoga/relaxation corner. This morning she woke up and said, "mom, am I getting lady muscles like you?" This is what she calls the muscles in my arms, because they are much smaller than her father's. Edited by jarvy01 2012-11-09 12:24 PM |

I'd be sharing that with everyone. I'm sure I'd never make the cut because I pretty much always look like death - but you look really good. No snow here, but it's in the high 30's this morning. Yeah. I was asked to handle the bike, but I'm already in for the whole deal. I'd love to handle the bike portion one day. Just let it all hang out for 56 miles. Sounds like a lot of fun and a lot of pain. |

I have a friend who has panic attacks almost every time she's in open water. It's to the point that I think she brings them on by obsessively worrying about it. I don't really get it, but I suppose if you're going to have some kind of fear of something, the water would be the most logical because it's not like you can pull over to the side of the road and take a break. The bottom of the lake or ocean is not a great place to rest. |

Count me in as one who would not consider an ocean swim. I was fine with the ocean as a kid, but since becoming a parent I have developed anxiety over it. We live very close to the ocean and I hate taking the kids there. I vividly remember as a kid being pulled under and not knowing which way was up - I do not want my kids knowing that feeling. Now I can't even imagine going in to swim a tri - I still have anxiety over lake and bay swims although I made huge improvements last season. |
