Hola from NY. I actually found out about the cancelation until I landed in LaGuardia. Same as me, 1000's of runners from all over the world in disbelief about when they chose to cancel the race. I do agree it was the right thing to do, but till the very last minute when everyone had arrived already in NY. Making lemonade out of lemons, today I went out for a much needed 8.5 mile run in beautiful Central Park and tomorow we will be volunteering in Staten Island and then going for a long run.Hope everyone is doing well!

E still doing well. Slowing down a little on the run, but looks on track for break 11:00. He has 90 minutes to go about 7 miles if I'm reading the website correctly.

Just saw Ernesto cross the finish line on the live stream. He took a big bow! Looks like about 10:47:50.

Way to go Ernesto!

Gabe, I feel for you.  So sorry that they cancelled the race so late.  I too think it was the right decision, but it's too bad that everyone had to pay to fly there for no race.  Hope you enjoy your time in NY anyway and hope you find a race that you can get into soon since you're all trained up!

My ride today was fun.  Dropped back from the planned 52 after I scoped out the hills yesterday.  36 was just right and had a few challenging hills.  Since I've only been on my bike twice in the last 5 weeks, it was a great decision.

Ernesto that was a fantastic performance sub 11 hrs is some serious stuff way to go - you earned it!!!!!

Gabe - Feel your pain and it really sucks that they didn't have the courage to cancel it earlier.  FWIW, if you feel like staying stateside for another week, you are more than welcome to join us in Harrisburg next Sunday for the marathon.  Think Bethlehem, but flatter (i know, not very appealing compared to NYC).

Mitch (and others),

I'm seriously getting worried I might have a stress fracture in my right lower leg. Tried to run on Thursday and pulled up lame immediately. I fail the "hop on one leg" test.

But it also might just be a calf strain. How did you (Mitch) get diagnosed?

5 miles yesterday & 8 miles today.  No more than 3 miles at any clip next week as I taper down.  To combat the itch to do more, I may hit the pool for the first time in months.  Legs feel strong and they wanted to run fast today, but needed to hold back the dogs. Early weather prediction is for mostly sunny low 40s to start climbing into the mid 50s.

Chris: Be careful of  that leg.

Joe, stick to the plan this week.

For the race, what's your actual mile by mile plan? (Just to let you know, they do have a 3:25 pace group).

I'm thinking that I'm gonna start with the 3:25 group weather conditions permitting and see how things progress  I've set mental and HR check ins to see where I am as the day progresses.  During my race last year, I started to feel it in earnest at mile 18 and I was cooked by mile 22, but made it in around 3:45.  20' mins is a huge amount of time to take off in a year so I want to be realistic.  I was way undertrained last year.  After almost a year's worth of MAF training and 18 weeks of dedicated running I feel like my fitness is significantly improved - but it is a long race.  I think I know my body better this year and know realistically when things are heading south.  That said, I'm starting worry.

Joe,

I just looked at your Oct 21 20 miler. Your heart stayed steady at about 144, and at an 8:35 pace. That looks really good. I think you are around 42? so 180-age is 138. Doing 20 miles at 8:35 pace at 6 beats over MAF is pretty good.

For comparison, to go 3:25 you need to speed up your pace to about 7:49 or not THAT much faster. For the first half of my race, my heart rate was about 149, or MAF + 18. From what I can see from your files, you can run 7:46 at better than MAF + 18.

So trust your training (as Ernesto says). But I would slow down the first half if your heart rate gets above, say, 156. You can let it go slowly higher after that.

Joe, resist the urge to burn the energies. The taper is exactly supposed to cause that and if you interfere, you will only rob minutes of your finish. As for pacing the Mary, if you are to join the 3:25 pacer, make sure you start about 400 yards in front of him/her and let them catch you somewhere between miles one and two. Pacers are obsessed with hitting splits, the bad thing is that your body isn't up to par yet. After mile seventeen, slowly pull away from the pace group and run by feel, by that time you will know exactly how much you can give or not. I believe 3:20 is very doable for you. Also do a dynamic warmup before the race starts and don't forget to address nutrition, short sips of sports drinks and gels.
