Congrats on a great race Ernesto!

Feeling the urge to get back in the pool a little this month to break up some of the running, so I think I'll put my name back on the chart this month.

Chris, get an appointment with your doctor to have that leg checked out.  Don't risk further damage until you know for certain whats going on.  They should be able to see a fracture on an xray even if its small. Muscle/ligament problems will show up on an MRI.  Hope it's nothing too serious.

Chris,

I went to a sports medicine doctor to be diagnosed. He did a physical exam where he pushed and prodded all along my shin and calf to see if the pain presented with pressure from his fingers. He then had X-rays of both lower legs done. My pain was presenting in interior of left leg. He compared the X-rays to each other and then compared to his physical exam and where I felt pain when he pushed with his fingers.

He did a similar exam when my daughter had her stress fracture.

He was pretty sure I had one at that point but was not 100% sure. He then ordered a bone scan where I first was injected with some isotopes or something and then went back for the scan. The scan measures blood uptake into the bones and identifies where a bone is healing. The bone scan lined up with the X-ray and the physical exam to show exactly where the stress fractures were.

Short answer, find a doc who specializes in sports injuries, etc. Agree, no running until doc and diagnosis.

-Mitch

Easy 30' run today. Next full credit workout will be Sunday.

Swam for the first time yesterday in ages, 1 mile. Pushed off with only left foot. I think it actually made my right calf feel better. But man, not swimming really showed. Felt like I was swimming in jello.

More on the stress fracture subject.  When my daughter went back for her follow up her doctor was livid.  he'd seen two patients earlier in the day who had been diagnosed with stress fractures weeks earlier.  one was a grown women who when diagnosed was 6 weeks out from the Detroit Marathon.  She took three weeks off and ran the marathon anyway.  Her stress fracture was in her pelvis - she now has a fully broken pelvis.  The other patient was a teenager who after six weeks was showing no improvement.  Doc asked her if she had listened to his directions that she do no running or ipact activities.  She seemed to think that practicing and playing powder puff football would be okay.  Her parents were also at the original appointment and did not seem to get that playing football is an impact sport (with regard to legs).

Doc was happy that my daughter had done no running.  She still has a couple weeks to rest and then I think she'll get the all clear.  Then I get to work on rehabbing her from a run perspective.

Thanks Mitch.

I'm still hesitant to go to the doctor. If I went to the doctor for every ache and pain, I would be there constantly. But in the meantime, I am basically treating this as if I do have a stress fracture. That is, I'm not running or doing anything that causes impact. (BTW, does the drainer cause impact? If not, I may start up again on that.) If I go a week and it still hurts, then to the doctor I go. Is there danger in that?

Great time! I am also aiming at sub 10 race...for my HM in February! Nice to see your hard work pay off. Sorry I am late to the party, just came back from Washington (D.C.) where I met my new nephew, so while you were racing I was drinking.

Impact on the drainer... no, but possibly torque.  I'd be cautious.  If it hurts, don't do it.

Scott's right - Doc's orders to me were cycling or elliptical fine if there was not pain.  Where is your pain?  When you press on the localized area does it hurt?  Agree your comment about every ache and pain.  Doc didn't order me to wear a boot or anything.  But I think that was due to where it was on my leg.  Don't think waiting a week will be bad.

Adding in yesterday's workouts, 3 mile run on the treadmill, then I swam 1000 yards, but was well under the 30 minute threshold so that one's not added in.  Hopefully get the bike back from the shop today, all tuned up and ready to go, and get some time on the trainer this afternoon.  The shop owner, who is a friend, was shocked that I was still on the bike's original chain at close to 3000 miles and said the stretch and wear were awful, so I guess I get a new chain and cassette while we're at it.  I guess excessive chain stretch causes the cassette teeth to wear down?  Is there a break-in period for a new chain that I'll need to think about prior to my race in two weeks?
