I want to spread them out which will require traveling either in the spring or the fall. I just can't figure out the right combination that will work with the home life. Training-wise, the best way to plan for double A races is to do the races back to back in consecutive weeks (this is tough for AGers because of the immeadiate post-race pain) or to spread them as far apart as possible (so June - November / May - October etc.) There's a reason Rinny did IMFL this year. She went down post-Kona got her qualifier done and can now take a rest period and then completely plan her 2013 around Kona. Same thing goes for AGs. If you have an A race and plan everything lese around that, things generally work better than if you have a have a whole bunch of races and try to plan your training around multiple races. |

I would rather spread them out and enjoy them. If I do back to back I can't see enjoying it nearly as much. It would be more like one big mega-race. I'm most likely going to do something like: Patriot (again) and Beach to Battleship 70.3 which are 19 weeks apart. or TryCharleston (April) and Rev3 Maine (August) which are 18 weeks apart. Doing Patriot and Pumpkin last year at 12 weeks apart I never felt like I recovered after the first race because I felt like I couldn't take a mini-break. |

Did 3600 in pool today and felt totally spent by the end. Made me realize just how long the iron distance swim is going to be next August. For IM swim, do you all just try to find a comfortable pace and keep it for the duration? What is an average time for this length of swim (a time when lots of people are rolling in)? Most people finish in the 1:05 - 1:25 band. You pretty much find a comfortable pace and go. You're not going to make your day on the swim but if you're stupid you can break it. This^^^^ Find your forever pace and swim, just keep swimming. You do not want to burn any matches on the swim, and it's easy to do when you're all hyped up in the water with all those people. It's really not that bad distance wise, even though it seems like it takes forever. =/ Best phrase ever. I second that. The first time I heard it not even thinking I said that's F'in awesome outloud and three other people started cracking up in agreement. |

You really want to take a week off after the spring race and do nothing. It'll let your body recovery and you'll feel a whole lot better (both mentally and physically) when you hit the big build weeks for the second race. |

I was planning on taking a full week off this time around. This last time I did light trainer rides and swimming the first three days and then on Thursday I felt better so I went out 15 minutes slow on the bike and then decided I had a 15 minute interval in me. About 11 minutes in I went from feeling great to tanked all at once. I knew I had screwed up and it just carried over. Every time the rest of the summer I went hard it was a few days to recover again. People I finished 10-25 minutes ahead of at Patriot finished 5-10 minutes ahead of me at Pumpkin. Rookie mistake.....live and learn. |

Recovering today from my first yoga class in forever. Missing training but I still have another 2-3 weeks of rest. What type of yoga do you do (sorry, I know I've asked this before)? I've been contemplating giving it another shot. Last night was a yin class, which involves long holds to work on the soft tissue. My friend Kim (who is also doing IMMT) hated yoga. I convinced her to take a beginner class (1 night a week for 6 weeks) to get down the fundamentals. After getting the basics and feeling "conversant" in yoga she likes it. She avoids what she views as the touchy-feely classes and she's seeing benefits from the classes she attends. |

There's the wish list and then there's the realistic wish list. I'd prefer they just get me gift certs to the LBS and then I can save them and get one nice item but my family is stubborn and likes everybody to open stuff so I'll probably just go the route of running tights, cycling jerseys, maybe an aero helmet and stuff like that. The unrealistic list is so much more fun! |

Pretty much every move in pilates is designed to recruit core and spinal stabilizers. |

To make a long story short yoga actually encompasses 7 different practices, one of which is asana (the physical poses). Yoga is wholistic. Pilates is essentially asana-type practice with a focus on the core. While either can be practiced at home, for both I would recommend (at least initially) taking a beginner class to get an idea and to have an instructor help you get the position correct. |

She's not making me stop running, as it's not making anything worse. (Probably just not allowing it to get better.) I've been stretching after every run and it has been helping. I actually feel much better than I did when I first saw her about 7 weeks ago. I was having stabbing pain/muscle cramping in my butt cheek, which is no fun. That's gone away and I'm back to the usual hamsting/sciatic pain I've had for a long time. She still thinks I could benefit from a cortisone shot because in her words "I'm just being stoic" which I had to admit is pretty accurate. I tolerate the pain and it's just become part of my normal day, but she thinks I could be a whole lot better. I'm kind of mixed, she said it was up to me, I could continue with stretching/PT and add in pilates. But when she moved my legs around and I cringed she recommended getting the MRI and going from there. At least that will show if there's something going on in my back, and how bad it is. Maybe it'll be no big deal and no injection will be needed. |

I want to do pilates, as I have the weakest core in the world after having 4 kids back-to-back, but the classes are crazy expensive. Maybe you should take an intro class to teach you proper form (like Kelly said), and then do it on your own. My gym has a reformer for personal use, but I've only ever seen 2 people using it. |
